Chapter 8
Chapter 8:
Secrets, Lies, and a Heart Caught Between
The night draped itself softly over the grand Lim's mansion, wrapping the gardens and wide lawns in deep shadows lit only by the warm glow of lampposts and moonlight. Kath stood at the edge of her room, her hands trembling slightly as she smoothed the fabric of the black dress she had sworn she would never put on. Nervousness fluttered like a trapped bird in her chest, and she paused to take a deep, steadying breath, wondering how on earth she had ended up here-sneaking out after midnight, dressed in a tight, elegant number and sky‑high heels, doing things she would have never dared to do just a few months ago.
She hadn't even told her own mother about Gavin. She hadn't breathed a word to anyone, because she knew how complicated it all was. But here she was, stepping into a version of herself she barely recognized-one who slipped out of windows, who dressed up for secret dates, and who found herself wanting more than the quiet, simple life she'd always known.
The dress fit her like a second skin: sleek black satin‑blend fabric that hugged her figure in all the right places, with thin spaghetti straps and a square neckline that showed off her collarbones and the gentle curve of her chest-something she'd always been too shy to reveal. The hem ended just above her knees, emphasizing the line of her legs, and she'd paired it with lace‑paneled pointed‑toe stilettos that added grace and height, even if they felt a little wobbly under her nervous feet. Around her ears glinted chunky gold hoop earrings, and in one hand she held a small black clutch with a gold clasp-all finishing touches that made her look polished, alluring, and undeniably beautiful. Her hair fell in soft, glossy waves around her shoulders, her skin glowing with a subtle sheen, her makeup soft but defined, framing her eyes and giving her lips a warm, natural tint.
Kath traced the neckline lightly with her fingers, remembering exactly where this dress had come from. It had been Olivia's idea, during a summer shopping trip in the city's most upscale mall. Olivia had dragged her into a high‑end boutique, insisted she try it on, and when Kath had stepped out of the changing room, her best friend's eyes had lit up. "You have no idea how stunning you look," Olivia had beamed, smiling so proudly. But Kath had hated it then-too much skin showing, too revealing, far from the modest clothes she usually preferred. She'd thought she'd never wear it again... until Gavin had suggested it.
He'd told her he wanted to see her in something that showed off her curves. If any other man had said that to her, she would have snapped back or walked away without a second thought-maybe even punched him for being too forward. But with Gavin Lorenzo? Everything felt different. His words made her cheeks flush, her heart race, and a strange, giddy warmth spread through her. For him, she wanted to look beautiful. She wanted him to look at her, really look at her, and see everything she had never dared to show anyone else.
With her heels in hand so she wouldn't make noise on the marble floors, Kath slipped quietly out the back door, moving carefully across the shadowed garden. The air was cool and fragrant, carrying the scent of jasmine and freshly cut grass, the silence broken only by the faint chirping of crickets and the distant hum of the city. She felt her heart hammering against her ribs-part excitement, part guilt. She'd never been good at lying, but since Gavin had walked into her life, telling untruths had become second nature. She'd invented excuses-group projects, late‑night study sessions, meetings with classmates-anything to get away and spend time with him. She hated keeping secrets from Olivia, her oldest and dearest friend, the one person who had always stood by her. But she couldn't risk losing this... or losing Olivia, either. She knew deep down that this couldn't last forever, that every lie piled up like a debt waiting to be repaid. Consequences were inevitable. Yet each time she saw Gavin, each time he smiled at her or touched her hand, she fell a little harder, a little deeper, until there was no turning back.
Kath closed her eyes for a split second, wishing she could go back to the day they first met-wish she could have kept her distance, never let herself be charmed, never fallen for what she'd once thought was just his playful trickery. But denying him was impossible. He made her feel things she'd never imagined: seen, desired, cherished, and alive in a way she hadn't known she could be.
"Kath?"
The soft, familiar voice cut through the quiet like a blade, and her heart nearly stopped. She froze, one foot hovering over the garden path, and slowly turned around. Standing under the glow of a garden lamp was Olivia, wrapped in a flowing purple nightgown, her dark brown hair loose around her shoulders, her warm brown eyes scanning Kath from head to toe. A playful, knowing smirk tugged at Olivia's lips, her eyebrows lifting in surprise and delight.
"You look absolutely stunning in that dress," Olivia said, stepping closer, her voice warm and bright. "I told you ages ago it would suit you perfectly. You're glowing!"
Kath's throat felt tight. She forced a small, nervous smile, her fingers tightening around her clutch.
"So..." Olivia's eyes sparkled with mischief and curiosity. "You're going on a date, aren't you? Who's the lucky guy that finally stole my best friend's heart?"
Kath's stomach twisted painfully. If you only knew, Olivia, she thought, guilt gnawing at her conscience until it felt like it might consume her. You'd hate me. You'd hate us both. You've loved him for so long-how can I be the one sneaking out to be with him?
"Just... a guy from my English class," she said, the lie tasting bitter on her tongue. It wasn't entirely untrue-they did share that class-but she left out the one detail that would shatter everything: his name. Gavin Lorenzo.
Olivia's face lit up, and she clapped her hands softly, bouncing on her heels like an excited child. "Oh, really? That's wonderful! What's his name? When will I finally get to meet him?"
She giggled dreamily, her eyes shining with genuine happiness for Kath-and every bit of that happiness felt like a weight pressing harder on Kath's chest. How could she possibly explain that the man she was falling in love with was the same man Olivia had pined after since childhood? How could she confess without breaking the bond that had held them together for years?
Kath bit her lower lip to keep her voice steady, fighting back the ache in her heart. "I... I have to go now, Liv. I'm already running late."
She turned and hurried toward the tall iron gates of the estate, heels clicking softly against the stone path now that she was out of sight of the house. Behind her, Olivia called out cheerfully:
"Enjoy your date! Be safe, okay? And tell me everything tomorrow!"
Kath waved without looking back, her eyes burning with unshed tears.
When she stepped through the gates and onto the quiet street, the sight that greeted her made her breath catch. Parked at the curb was Gavin's sleek sports car, its polished surface gleaming under the streetlights. He leaned casually against the hood, dressed in a rich brown leather bomber jacket over a crisp cream shirt, dark tailored trousers, and boots-effortlessly handsome, refined yet rugged, exactly the kind of man who turned heads wherever he went. His dark hair fell softly across his forehead as he scrolled on his phone, but the moment he lifted his eyes and saw her, everything else seemed to vanish.
A slow, boyish grin spread across his face. His gaze swept shamelessly from her heels up the line of her legs, over her waist and curves, to her face-warm, appreciative, hungry in the sweetest way-before he licked his lips and pushed away from the car, closing the distance between them in long, confident strides.
"Hey, baby," he murmured when he reached her, his hands settling firmly yet gently on her hips, giving them a soft squeeze that sent shivers down her spine. He leaned in, his voice warm and low against her ear. "You look absolutely breathtaking, love. Like a dream I never want to wake up from."
Kath felt her face heat up, burning bright as a ripe tomato under his gaze and his praise. She'd never been so openly admired, never felt so wanted, and every word he whispered made her forget her guilt-if only for a little while. In his presence, her mind emptied of everything but him: the way he smelled of leather and expensive cologne, the warmth of his hands through the thin dress fabric, the depth of his dark eyes that held only her.
He opened the passenger door for her with a gallant smile, helping her settle inside before sliding into the driver's seat. On the center console, waiting for her, was a lush bouquet of deep crimson roses wrapped in textured cream paper-rich, romantic, perfect.
"For you," he said softly, starting the engine. "Thought you deserved something as beautiful as you are tonight."
As they drove toward the city skyline, Kath stared at the flowers, her heart torn between joy and sorrow. By the time they reached their destination-a high‑rise rooftop restaurant with floor‑to‑ceiling glass-night had fully fallen. The view was dazzling: thousands of city lights sparkling below like scattered diamonds, the distant glow of skyscrapers, and a quiet table set for two, lit by a tiny table lamp that cast a golden glow over sushi, delicate appetizers, and two glasses of sparkling wine.
They sat across from each other, the city spread out behind Gavin like a glittering backdrop. He leaned forward, his eyes never leaving hers, and reached across the table to lace his fingers through hers.
"Everything okay?" he asked, his tone softening when he saw the conflict in her expression.
Kath took a shaky breath, her heart aching as she looked at him-the man who made her happier than she'd ever been, yet the source of the guilt eating her alive. She knew she couldn't keep hiding forever. She had to say it, even if it broke her own heart to do so.
"Gav..." she began, her voice trembling, tears gathering in her eyes. "I think... I think we need to stop this."
The words hung heavy in the warm, candlelit air. It pained her to say them-painful to give up the happiness she'd found with him-but she couldn't go on betraying her best friend. "I love being with you," she whispered, "more than I ever thought possible. But I can't keep lying to Olivia. I can't keep risking everything we have... not when she loves you, too. I have to choose my friendship... even if it breaks me to walk away from you."
Gavin's smile faded, replaced by a look of tender understanding-and a quiet determination that told Kath this wasn't going to be as simple as she feared.
