Chapter 14
Chapter 14:
Burdens and Broken Hearts
Kathryna stood quietly in the corner of the grand hall, feeling small and invisible, completely out of place. She had never been to a party like this before-never been surrounded by such wealth, such elegance, such beauty and perfection everywhere she looked. The air was filled with the scent of expensive flowers and fine perfume, the music was soft and sophisticated, and every person there carried themselves with a grace and confidence that felt like it belonged to a world she could never truly enter.
She looked down at her own clothes, at the simple but nice outfit Olivia had helped her prepare, and she felt a sharp twist of sadness in her chest. She knew she did not belong here. She knew that no matter how pretty she looked, no matter how well she dressed, she would always be an outsider. And she told herself that this pain, this feeling of being lost and unworthy, was exactly what she deserved.
This was her fault. She was the one who had made the choices that led them here. She was the one who had fallen in love with Gavin, even though she knew from the very beginning that it was wrong. She had known that she could never fit into this life, that she was just the daughter of a hardworking nanny, and Olivia was the daughter of wealthy, respected parents. Olivia was the kind, beautiful, perfect girl who belonged in this world-someone who deserved to be loved and cherished, someone who was made for a life of comfort and happiness. And Kathryna? She was just someone who came from a different world, someone who had to work hard every day just to get by. She would never be ashamed of her mother's job-she loved her mother, and she knew how much hard work it took to provide for them. But she also knew that no matter how much she tried, she would never be on the same level as Olivia, or as Gavin.
She loved Gavin with every part of her being. He had become the center of her world, the person she thought she would spend her life with. But when he broke up with her, when he told her the truth that changed everything, she felt like her whole world had come crashing down. It hurt so deeply that it felt like her heart was being torn into pieces, like every breath she took was filled with pain and emptiness.
That morning, after their classes at university, he had told her everything. And when he said the words that ended their relationship, she had felt so hopeless that she could not even stand straight. She had walked home alone in the middle of a heavy rainstorm, tears mixing with the cold water that fell from the sky, her heart broken beyond repair.
Flashback Begins
"Gavin, please, can you explain this to me?" Kathryna asked, her voice shaking as she spoke between loud, painful sobs. Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision, and her whole body trembled with grief. "What is happening? We were fine just yesterday... we were happy. Why are you suddenly doing this? Why are you breaking up with me?"
It felt like a knife had been driven into her chest. She had given him everything she had-her heart, her trust, her love, every part of herself that she owned. She had given him her whole world, and now he was taking it all away, leaving her with nothing but pain and confusion.
Finally, he turned to face her. And when she looked at him, she saw that he was crying too. Tears rolled down his cheeks, and his brown golden eyes-eyes that had once looked at her with warmth and light, eyes that she had fallen in love with-were filled with so much sadness and regret that it hurt her to look at him. It was the first time she had ever seen him look so broken, so full of sorrow.
"Kath... I can't tell you," he said, his voice weak and quiet, sounding as if every word cost him great pain.
"No, Gavin, please!" she begged, reaching out to him even though she knew he was pulling away. "Please tell me. I need to know. I have to understand why this is happening. I can't just accept it without knowing the truth."
He just stood there, shaking his head slowly, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. She hated herself in that moment-hated that she was crying in front of him, hated that she was the one making him suffer, hated that she had given him her all and now she was the one left with nothing but tears.
"Did I do something wrong?" she asked, her voice small and desperate. "Tell me, please. Am I not enough for you? Am I not good enough?"
She held her breath, waiting for his answer, afraid of what he might say.
"No, Kath," he said quickly, his voice full of emotion. "You didn't do anything wrong. And you are more than enough-you are everything I could ever want. You are perfect for me."
"Then why?" she cried out, the tears coming faster now, streaming down her face in endless trails. "If I am enough, if you love me, then why are you doing this? Why are you breaking my heart? Tell me the truth! Please, I beg you!"
The rain began to fall harder, cold and heavy, soaking through their clothes and sticking to their skin. The drops hit the ground with loud, heavy sounds, matching the rhythm of her beating heart. She ran after him, her feet slipping on the wet pavement, her hair dripping water, her whole body cold and wet, but she did not care. Nothing mattered except getting answers, except knowing why he was taking away the love she had given so freely.
"Kath, please... I love you. I really do," he said, his voice breaking, filled with so much pain that it was hard to hear. "But..."
"But what?" she shouted, her voice echoing through the empty parking lot, loud and raw with heartbreak. She was crying so hard now that she could barely see him through the water in her eyes. "Tell me! Just say it! Why can't you be with me? What is stopping us?"
"Why?" she repeated again, between her sobs, her voice trembling and broken. She knew she looked desperate, she knew she was begging, but she did not care. She had never been the kind of person to give up easily, especially not when it came to love. She needed to know the real reason behind everything.
"Gavin, please... just tell me," she whispered, her voice soft and weak now, full of sadness and hopelessness. "Please... I need to know."
He stood there in the middle of the parking lot, both of them completely soaked by the heavy rain. The weather matched exactly how she felt inside-dark, cold, and full of tears. The rain kept falling, pouring down like her feelings, never stopping, never letting up.
"I am so sorry, Kath," he said finally. His voice was quiet, but it carried so much weight, so much pain. And then, he turned his back on her. He began to walk away, toward his car, his curly dark hair sticking to his forehead and neck, messy and wet, just like his heart.
"Gavin!" she called out, her voice loud and desperate, tears still pouring down her face. "Am I not worthy of knowing? Tell me, please! I deserve to know why!"
She called out again, her voice shaking as she stood there alone in the rain. He moved slowly toward his car, and his brown golden eyes-eyes that had once lit up when he looked at her, eyes that had held so much love-kept looking away, refusing to meet her brown eyes. He could not bear to look at her, because he knew that if he looked at her face, if he looked into the eyes that he loved so much, he would not be able to do what he had to do.
Finally, he stopped. He turned around to face her, and when their eyes met, she saw something there that made her heart stop. She saw so much sadness, so much worry, and so much love-love that was still there, love that he still felt, but love that he was choosing to give up.
"I'm marrying... Olivia."
Those four words fell from his lips like stones, heavy and cold, crushing everything she had hoped for. And in that moment, she understood everything. Out of all the girls in the world, out of all the people he could have chosen, he had chosen Olivia-the girl who had been her best friend, the girl she loved like a sister.
He unlocked his car door quickly, moving with hurried, stiff movements, as if he could not get away from her fast enough. He got inside, started the engine, and drove away, leaving her standing there alone in the rain, frozen and numb, as if her whole body had turned to stone.
Flashback Ends
Kathryna looked around the beautiful room, her heart feeling even heavier now. She thought about everything that had happened. She wondered if Olivia knew the truth. She wondered if that was why Olivia was acting so cold, so distant, so full of anger and hurt around her. Maybe Olivia had found out, and that was why she was treating her like a stranger, like someone who had betrayed her.
And Kathryna knew that she had told so many lies. She had lied about being with Gavin, hiding their relationship from her best friend. She had lied and said that he was just a friend, just someone she knew, while all the time their hearts were connected. She had been so afraid of hurting Olivia, because she knew how much Olivia cared about Gavin, how sensitive she was when it came to him. She had been so scared that if Olivia knew the truth, she would lose her best friend forever.
But she had been wrong. She had thought that keeping it secret would be better, that she could keep the love in her heart without hurting anyone. But instead, she had hurt everyone. She had hurt Olivia, she had hurt Gavin, and she had hurt herself.
She had loved Gavin so much-hopelessly, completely, with all her soul. But he had chosen to walk away from their love. He had chosen to end it, even though he loved her too. And that made everything so much more painful.
She looked at the crowd, at the happiness and joy all around her, and she felt like she was standing in the middle of a world that did not belong to her. She knew that she would never be able to have what she wanted. She knew that she would always be the one standing on the outside, watching, while the people she loved lived in a world that was too big, too perfect, and too far away from her.
But as she stood there, remembering everything, she also understood something else. She understood why Gavin had done what he did. She understood the heavy burden he carried, the pain he felt in his heart, even though he was the one making the choices.
Gavin had never wanted to hurt her. He had never wanted to break her heart. But he was trapped, just like she was. He was surrounded by expectations, by family traditions, by people who had plans for his life that were not his own. And most of all, he loved Olivia like family, and he knew how much Olivia cared for him. He knew that if he chose to be with Kathryna, it would bring pain and trouble to everyone he loved. He knew that people would talk, that they would judge her, that they would look down on her because of who she was and where she came from. He knew that his family and the people around him would try to protect Olivia, to keep her safe, and that they would see Kathryna as someone who was not good enough, someone who was not right for him.
And so, he made the hardest choice any person could ever make. He chose to hurt the only woman he had ever loved, to break her heart, to say things that he did not mean and that caused him just as much pain as they caused her. He did it not because he wanted to, but because he thought it was the only way to keep her safe. He thought that if he ended their relationship, if he married Olivia like everyone expected, then Kathryna would be protected from all the problems, all the judgment, all the difficulties that would come if they were together. He thought that by letting her go, he was giving her a chance to have a life without the weight of his name and his world, a chance to be happy without having to face all the struggles that came with being with him.
It was a choice filled with so much love, and so much pain. He was hurting her because he loved her, because he wanted the best for her, even if it meant he had to suffer in return. He was walking away from the woman he loved more than anything, just to keep her safe from the world that was waiting to judge her, just to make sure that no one would ever hurt her or look down on her. She could see it in his brown golden eyes-that same light that had once shone when he looked at her was still there, but now it was covered in sadness and regret, because he had to hide it, had to put it away, just to protect her.
Kathryna felt tears come to her eyes again, but this time they were not just tears of sadness. They were tears of understanding, and of sadness for him too. She knew how hard it was for him. She knew that he was suffering every bit as much as she was. He had to pretend that he did not love her, that he did not care, even though it was the farthest thing from the truth. He had to break her heart, and he had to break his own heart as well, all in the name of protecting her.
She stood there, feeling the weight of everything, feeling the pain in her chest, but also feeling the truth of his sacrifice. She knew that he had not chosen to hurt her willingly. He had chosen to hurt her because he loved her, because he wanted what was best for her, even if it meant losing her forever.
The music played on, and the party continued around them, but Kathryna stood in her corner, carrying the heavy heartbreak of her own love story, and understanding the heavy, painful burden that Gavin carried too. She knew that no matter what happened, the love they shared would always be there-hidden, quiet, and painful-but it would always be real, and it would always be true.
