Chapter 13

Chapter 13:
The Weight of Betrayal

Olivia sat quietly in the back of the luxurious car, her hands folded tightly in her lap. There was a heavy, stormy feeling inside her chest-not anger that came from being cruel, but anger that came from being wounded. She was confused, she was heartbroken, and she felt as if everything she had ever believed in had been shattered into pieces. She was not a bad person; she was just someone who had been betrayed by the two people she trusted most, and the pain she felt was so deep it was hard to bear.

She looked across at Kathryna, who sat there looking soft, gentle, and completely innocent on the surface. But Olivia saw through the mask now. She saw the truth: Kathryna Suarez was the girl who had taken the man Olivia had loved with every part of her being. She was the girl Olivia had once called her sister, her best friend-the person she had shared every secret, every dream, and every joy with. And now, that title felt like a lie.

I don't need liars like her in my life, Olivia thought, her voice soft but firm in her mind. I don't need people who smile at my face while taking everything that is mine. But this isn't about being mean. It's about protecting myself, and about facing the truth that has been hidden from me for so long.

"Liv, are you ready?" Kathryna asked, her voice warm and sweet, sounding exactly like she always did-like the kind, caring friend Olivia had known for years.

Olivia rolled her eyes, not because she wanted to be rude, but because it was hard to look at her without feeling that sharp twist in her heart. How could she act as if nothing had changed? As if she had not destroyed everything between them?

"Yeah," Olivia replied, her voice calm but distant. "Let's go now."

She stepped out of the grand Lim mansion, her posture graceful and elegant, just as she always was. But inside, she was fighting a battle. The air between them was thick with awkwardness, so heavy it felt like it could be touched. It was difficult for Olivia to breathe in that silence, because she could not forget what their friendship had once been like. Once, they had been the kind of friends who laughed until their sides hurt, who comforted each other when things were hard, who felt safe and happy just being near each other. But Kathryna had chosen to change that. She had chosen to keep secrets, to lie, and to take the one person who made Olivia's world feel complete.

"Liv?" Kathryna spoke up after a while, her voice small and hesitant. "I... I want to tell you something."

Olivia kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, pretending she had not heard. She did not want to talk. She did not want to hear excuses or explanations-nothing could fix what had been done.

"What is it?" Olivia asked finally, when she could not stay silent any longer. Her tone was not harsh, just empty-empty of the love and warmth she used to feel for her friend.

"Umm... nothing," Kathryna murmured, looking down at her lap.

Olivia sighed softly to herself. She had made sure Kathryna looked perfect today, just as she always did. She had chosen her outfit, helped her prepare, and made sure she looked like she belonged in their world-because Kathryna was her best friend, once upon a time, and Olivia had wanted her to be there. She had wanted her to see what was happening, to understand the truth, but not to make her feel small or worthless. She wanted Kathryna to see that she did not belong in the life she had tried to take, not because she was better than her, but because they came from different worlds, and because what Olivia had with Gavin was something that had been built over years, something that could not be stolen.

"Where are we going, Liv?" Kathryna asked, her voice trembling slightly, as if she sensed that something was wrong. "Why are we dressed like this? Where are we going?"

Olivia turned to look at her, her dark eyes soft but clear. She did not want to hurt her, but she knew that telling the truth was the only way to make things right-even if it was painful.

"Our engagement party," Olivia said, her voice gentle but sure.

Kathryna's eyes widened, and her face turned pale. For the first time, the gentle mask slipped, and fear and confusion showed clearly in her expression. "Engagement party?" she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. "But... Gavin didn't tell me anything. He didn't say... he didn't mention..."

Olivia's heart ached as she watched her reaction. She knew how confusing this must be, but she also knew that Kathryna had known more than she was letting on. She had chosen to keep the truth hidden, and now she had to face the consequences.

"Yes," Olivia said again, her voice calm. "That is exactly where we are going."

She did not say anything more. She did not want to be cruel. She just wanted Kathryna to understand the reality of the situation. How could she expect Olivia to care about her feelings, when Kathryna had not cared about how Olivia felt when she started seeing Gavin behind her back? When she lied to her for months, pretending to be her friend while holding the man Olivia loved in secret? Kathryna had made her choices, and now it was time for her to see them clearly.

They arrived at the venue soon after, and as soon as they stepped inside, the room took their breath away. It was a beautiful, grand hall filled with soft golden light, elegant decorations, and the warm, rich sound of an orchestra playing gentle, beautiful music. The air was filled with laughter, the scent of fresh flowers and fine food, and the glow of happiness that came from being surrounded by family and loved ones. It was a perfect, wonderful place-just like the life Olivia had always dreamed of, and just like the life she had always believed she would share with Gavin.

Olivia walked in with her head held high, smiling warmly at everyone who greeted her. Her face lit up with genuine joy as she saw the people she loved most: her mother's family was there-her uncles, her aunts, her cousins, all smiling and waving at her. And from her father's side, her grandparents had arrived, their faces filled with pride and affection.

"Olivia, my dear," Old Madam Lim-Grandma-stepped forward, her face beaming with love as she reached out to take Olivia's hands. She leaned in and pressed a soft, loving kiss to Olivia's cheeks. "You have grown into such a beautiful, graceful young lady. So elegant, so full of life. I am so proud of you."

"Thank you, Grandma," Olivia said softly, her smile warm and sincere. But even as she smiled, memories flooded back to her-memories that were happy, and sad, and precious all at once.

Her mind drifted back to when they were just small children, running through the gardens of the Lorenzo estate, playing together like brother and sister. And among all those memories, there was one that stood out more than any other-a memory that showed exactly how much Olivia had always cared for Gavin, and how far she would go to protect him.

Olivia thought back to when they were eight years old. It was their first year in primary school, and Gavin had always been a quiet, gentle boy. He was different from the other children-he was kind, sensitive, and often got bullied because of it. The other kids thought he was weak, that he was too soft, and they would tease him, push him around, and say hurtful things to him.

One afternoon, Olivia had been waiting for him by the school gates, as she always did. She had seen a group of older boys corner him near the playground, surrounding him and laughing as they pushed him back and forth. They were shoving him, calling him names that made her blood boil, and Gavin stood there with his head down, his shoulders shaking a little, too scared to defend himself.

Olivia's heart raced with fear and anger, but she did not think about how big the boys were, or how many there were. All she knew was that no one was allowed to hurt Gavin-not while she was around. She ran across the playground as fast as her little legs could carry her, her small fists clenched tight at her sides.

"Leave him alone!" she shouted, her voice loud and clear, full of courage even though she was just a child facing bigger, stronger boys.

The bullies turned around, looking down at her with sneers on their faces. "And who are you?" one of them asked, laughing. "You want to fight us, little girl?"

"I'm Olivia Lim," she said proudly, standing right in front of Gavin and placing herself between him and the boys. "And I said leave him alone! You don't know what you're talking about, and you don't have the right to hurt anyone! If you touch him again, you'll have to answer to me!"

Gavin looked up then, his eyes wide with surprise and gratitude. He had never expected her to stand up for him, to protect him like that. Olivia was small, only a little girl herself, but she faced them all with a bravery that made them stop. The bullies stared at her, surprised by her courage, and eventually, after a few more words of defiance from her, they turned and walked away, grumbling but not daring to come back.

Once they were gone, Olivia turned to Gavin, her expression softening into a gentle smile. She reached out and took his small hand in hers, squeezing it tightly. "You're okay now," she told him, her voice warm and reassuring. "They won't hurt you anymore. I'm here, and I'll always be here to protect you."

Gavin looked at her, and in his eyes she saw something that made her heart feel light and happy-trust, affection, and something more. "Thank you, Livie," he said softly. "You're my best friend. I'll never forget this."

From that day on, Olivia knew that her feelings for him were deeper than friendship. She loved him with all her heart, and she knew that one day, they would be together. She believed that their bond was special, that it was built on trust and care, and that nothing could ever break it.

But Kathryna had come into their lives, and she had broken it. She had pretended to be the friend Olivia had always been, while secretly stealing the heart of the boy Olivia had loved for years.

Now, standing in the grand hall of the engagement party, Olivia looked at Kathryna and felt a heavy sadness in her heart. She did not hate her-not really. She was just hurt. She was hurt that the person she trusted most could lie to her, could hide things from her, could take something that was hers. She was not trying to be mean or to put Kathryna down. She was just trying to show her the truth, and to make her understand where she stood.

Olivia took a step forward, turning to face her fully, her eyes full of honesty and pain. Her voice was steady and strong, but there was no cruelty in it-only the truth.

"Kathryna," she said clearly, so that everyone around could hear, but with kindness in her words. "You may look innocent, and you may act like you are a kind, sweet girl-but I know the truth. I know what you are really like. You are ambitious, and you want things that do not belong to you. You want power, you want status, and you want the things that I was born into."

She paused, her gaze soft but firm, looking straight into Kathryna's eyes.

"And you think you can take Gavin," she continued, her voice gentle but clear. "You think you can steal him away from me, from our history, from everything we have built together since we were children. But let me tell you this now-I am not saying this to hurt you. I am saying this because you need to understand the reality of things."

She gestured around the beautiful hall, at the luxury and happiness that surrounded them.

"This world," she said, "is not something you can just take and keep. It is built on love, on trust, on family and history. And I have had that love and trust for a very long time. Gavin loved me first. He has known me, he has trusted me, and he has relied on me in ways you can never understand. I stood up for him when he was small, I protected him when he was weak, and I have been by his side through everything. You came into his life later, pretending to be my friend, and you thought you could take what was mine. But I want you to know-I do not hate you for wanting him. I understand how it feels to love someone deeply. But you must know that you are not on the same level as us, and you will never be able to take what we have built."

Her voice trembled slightly, showing the pain she felt, even as she spoke the truth.

"You may have him now," she said softly, her eyes filling with tears that she tried to hold back. "But you will never have his heart. You will never have what we shared. And one day, you will understand that love is not just about taking what you want. It is about respecting what belongs to others, and being honest with the people who care about you."

She stopped for a moment, taking a deep breath to calm herself. She was not a bad person. She was just someone who had been hurt, someone who had lost the most important friendship she had ever had, and someone who was trying to make sense of it all.

"I am not angry because I am mean," she said finally, her voice quiet but clear. "I am angry because I loved you. I loved you like a sister, and you lied to me. I loved Gavin with all my heart, and you took him away from me. But I do not wish you harm. I just wish you happiness-but happiness that is yours, and not something you have taken from someone else."

Grandma Lim walked over then, sensing the tension in the air, and put her arm around Olivia gently. "My dear," she said softly, "you are such a good person. You have a kind heart, and you deserve nothing but the best. Do not let this pain change who you are."

Olivia smiled at her grandmother, grateful for her kindness. She looked back at Kathryna, and for the first time, she felt a sense of peace. She had said what she needed to say. She had shown the truth without being cruel. She was hurt, yes, but she was still the same good, kind person she had always been.

The party went on around them, filled with music and laughter, but Olivia stood there, knowing that even though her heart was broken, she would survive. She would heal, and she would move forward-because she was strong, she was good, and she deserved to find happiness again, in her own time and in her own way.
