A smile graced her face as she watched her parents sit on the couch, eating the blueberry muffins she made not too long ago. A movie that she forgot the name of was playing on the TV, the volume on low. Taking her attention off of her parents, Amara began picking up the dirty bowls and putting them in the sink.
Goosebumps appeared on her arms, making the girl shiver. The house was chilly; the lingering smell of dough was in the air making the small family sigh at the nostalgic smell. Grabbing the egg carton, the girl opened the fridge. A frown coated her lips as she scanned the contents in the fridge, the products in disarray. Amara sighed, placing the eggs back on the counter; she began to take out all of the products.
Amara shut the fridge and started to search for the expiration dates.
As she sorted through the contents, Sinta, Amara's mom, turned her head, watching as her daughter stuck her tongue out, looking through the items from the fridge. A warm smile maneuvered onto her face, her eyes watering as she looked back at Charlie. Tapping his side lightly, the man looked from the TV and down at Sinta. Sinta tilted her head towards the kitchen, Charlie following her direction, saw Amara organize.
"Just like her mother, always making sure to keep her things clean and neat," Sinta rolled her eyes. Charlie snorted as the girl continued to sort through the collection of food.
"Well, unlike her father, who leaves his dirty socks everywhere. Our daughter takes after me and makes sure that she has everything organized."
"Hey, it's not my fault that the laundry basket is far away from me by the time I get to taking them off!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, hun. Whatever you say."
Amara looked up from her task as she heard the not-so-quiet whispers from her parents.
"You guys are bad at whispering."
"Hey, blame your mother! Hey-ow!" Charlie winced as Sinta hit his shoulder and flicked his head.
"Keep those claws away from me!" Charlie screeched as he hopped up from the couch and began to run towards the stairs, trying to escape Sinta's' wrath.
"Get back here with your oversized mustache!" Chasing after Charlie, Amara could hear the click of her mother's nails as she hit them together and made her way up the stairs.
Amara chuckled as she watched her mom disappear up the stairs, her cheeks burning from how hard she was smiling. Turning back to the counter and into the fridge, the girl grabbed the two empty creamer cartons. Amara shifted on her feet and tossed the cartons into the trash. The girl opened the refrigerator and grabbed each item on the counter, and placed them neatly on the shelves.
Curious, Amara opened the freezer, and her eyes widened as a smile broke out on her face. Boxes of waffles were lined neatly in the freezer. Amara firmly believes that she could not live without waffles, and it would be an understatement if someone were to say she loved waffles, whether they were homemade or frozen, although sometimes nothing could beat a freshly homemade waffle.
Quickly shoving the rest of the items back into the fridge, leaving the raspberries, blueberries, and syrup on the counter, no longer caring about organizing the refrigerator Amara grabbed an unopened box of waffles and pulled them out of the freezer. Almost ripping the top off, she pulled one of the bags out of the box and placed them on the counter. Practically throwing the waffle box onto the counter, the girl opened the bag of waffles.
Amara bounced on her feet as she pulled two waffles out, put them, and pushed them into the toaster. Charlie and Sinta's laughter echoed from upstairs as Amara waited for her waffles to crisp. The sound of her parent's laughter was something Amara truly missed when she was away, and it felt nice to hear it again.
But, she missed a lot of things while she was away. The calming aura that Forks encapsulated. It allowed her to think and relax, letting her concentrate as she came up with new recipe ideas or helped her mom cook in the kitchen. The memories of going out to dinner with her friends, Jacob, Embry, and Quil; fries thrown and milkshakes shared. The fun sleepovers she would have with Angela and Leah.
The toaster dinging brought the girl out of her thoughts. A smile graced her face as she pulled out a plate from the top cabinet and braced herself.
"Oh, hot, hot!" The girl winced as she grabbed the freshly toasted waffles. Setting the plate down on the counter and opening the blueberries and raspberries, she placed them meticulously on top of the waffles. Grabbing the syrup, she poured it all over the waffles.
The teenager opened the drawer, grabbed a fork, and shut the narrow drawer. Amara cut the waffle with the side of the utensil and took a large bite.
"Uh oh, she found the waffles." Turning around, Amara smiled, making Charlie and Sinta laugh. Sinta grabbed her phone from her pocket, opened her camera, and took a picture of Amara and her stuffed cheeks.
"Want some," Amara asked.
"No, it's okay, baby, eat them. We got them for you. Just don't eat them all; let them last for a little bit, okay?" Sinta questioned. Amara nodded as she grabbed her plate, sat down on the couch, and switched the channel. The theme music of; "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sounded from the TV, making the two parents groan.
"I thought she would grow out of this phase."
"She will never grow out of Buffy Summers."
"Just our luck, they started the reruns."
"She will find a way to buy all of the seasons before the end of the week; you know that, right?"
"Yeah, this is gonna be a disaster, and by the end of the month, she will either be a witch, vampire, or vampire slayer."
"Let's pray for none of the above."
