Chapter | 4

Shift. Put a marker on a tree. Shift back. Run. That was the exact steps that I had to repeat in my mind over and over. It was all I was doing by now. I would say we had been running for an hour, maybe more than that.

Skylar? How much longer?

I don't know yet. The land up ahead seems dangerous but we're already past all of the territories that I know of. I can't tell what's wrong with the land ahead, but we need to tell the others to stay back while we check it out. Tell them that if we don't come back in 30 minutes to go on without us.

Are you sure Sky? I don't want to loose them when we've made it this far.

I'm sure. It's our responsibility Mel.

Okay then, We'll link them.

"Hey guys, there's some land up here that seems dangerous even though we've made it through all the pack lands. We're going to check it out, you all stay here and wait. If we're not back in 30 minutes, keep going." I said through the pack link, well what was left of it. All during the trip I could feel more and more links fading, more and more people were dying. However, I knew we still had over three fourths of the pack right behind us. Most of us had made it out alive at least.

I slung the markers to mom, since she had better senses than Dylan or Lune. Even though they had their wolves, they were still quite young and wouldn't be able to sense danger as quickly. She grabbed the markers in her mouth and nodded.

We slowly put our paws onto the dangerous land. I could tell it was a very large plot of land, and it felt like another wolf territory. I kept going, slowly taking more and more steps into the territory, or what I thought was a territory.

That was when I smelt something I never wanted to. Wolves. It meant that this was wolf territory, and I wasn't welcomed here. No one liked rouges, and most rouges were killed immediately. However, some packs tortured them till death. I felt Skylar tense up as she felt more scared than before. I may be an Alpha, but I wasn't as powerful as some Alphas. I felt our tail fall and place itself in between our legs.

I backed up slowly and started running back out, but it was too late. I could hear howls not far off, and they were on my trial. They would chase me as far as I wanted to take them, but I knew I was going to win. For my family and for myself. I knew I hadn't made it far into this territory, so I could make it back out.

Even if I couldn't make it out fast enough, I still had a fight left within me. All I could hope was for them to give up and lose me when I left their territory. We ran as fast as we could, not daring to stop. It was just a straight run back to safe land. However, I felt myself become more and more confused as I kept running. I didn't come this far into the territory. Why wasn't I out yet? That's when I could hear growls growing closer. What the hell? These wolves had to be super wolves. No one has ever caught up to me, much less this fast.

Skylar began shaking as we ran, because she was more scared than I was. She knew something wasn't right, something that even I didn't know as of right now. She had gotten hurt enough, and she'll never forget what she's gone through. She has battle scars that will never leave, mentally and physically. She thought that death was the only option right now.

However we kept running as fast as we could, hoping we wouldn't have a fate like our father. We couldn't die yet. However, we could hear them gaining ground faster than we were. They were going to catch us.

Immediately, dead weight smashed into our left shoulder, sending us flying before hitting the ground. I felt Skylar inhale deeply after the breath was knocked out of us. The wolf then pounced on us, holding us down. We could fight, and we could kill it and run. Doing that however could get us in more trouble and punishment if we were caught. So we stayed where we were, but I growled loudly. The wolf seemed to inch back from us because it could tell we were powerful. I had to contact Mom and tell her to run.

"Mom, run. I've been caught, but don't come after me. Lead them to safety."

"What? No, I have to come get you!"

"Mom, don't. I'll make it as long as I can. Keep them safe and, if you can, contact me when you find a place to stay. Then we'll see if I can get out of here." I heard her sigh through the link.

"Okay. As long as you promise me you'll fight..."

"If I'm attacked then yes, I will fight."

"Okay, be careful baby girl."

"I will Mom. I love you."

She was already gone. I don't even think that she heard me. It brought tears to my eyes to think about. What if that was the last time I will ever get to say that and she didn't hear it?

Melynie, don't think like that. Skylar protested to me even though the wolf was still on top of us and holding us down. They were probably waiting for the Alpha to come and tell them what to do.
