07. study and imitation

Kongpob did not act immediately.

He observed.

It was a familiar process.

Reliable.

Distance created clarity.

From a distance, the pattern was obvious.

The junior:
• approached without hesitation
• spoke without distortion
• expressed intent without modification

Arthit's response:
• immediate engagement
• minimal resistance
• sustained attention

Inelegant.
But-
Repeatable.

Kongpob adjusted his position slightly in the corridor.

Not enough to be noticed.

Enough to hear.

"-you don't have to stay."
"I know."
"Then why are you?"
A pause.
"Because I want to."

Kongpob's gaze shifted.
There it was again.
That word.
Unstructured.
Unmeasured.

Arthit didn't argue.
Didn't question.
Didn't-

"...alright," he said.
Just that.

Acceptance.

Kongpob looked away.

Conclusion:
The junior's effectiveness did not come from:
• superior reasoning
• better judgment
• strategic positioning

It came from-
clarity.

Kongpob dismissed it.

Then reconsidered.

Clarity removed ambiguity.

Ambiguity reduced friction.

Reduced friction produced-
Acceptance.

It was-
simple.

Too simple.

And yet-
it worked.

Kongpob exhaled slowly.

Then made a decision.

Replication.

The first attempt was controlled.
Measured.

"You should reconsider your current arrangement."

Arthit looked up.
Frowning.
"...my what?"

"Your arrangement with the junior."
A pause.

"That's... vague."

"It is sufficient."

"No, it's not."

Kongpob adjusted.
"You are committing time to something without evaluating long-term consequences."

Arthit stared at him.
"...what?"

"Your current involvement lacks structural assessment."

"That doesn't-" Arthit stopped. "Are you talking about my date?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Then-
"...you could've just said that."

"I did."

"No, you didn't," Arthit snapped. "You said it like it's a report."

"It is an assessment."

"It's my personal life."

"That does not exempt it from evaluation."

Arthit leaned back.

Slowly.

Studied him.

"...why do you care?"

The question came again.
Direct.
Expected.
Kongpob paused.

This was-
the point of deviation.

The junior would say:
Because I want to.

Simple.

Incorrect.

Kongpob adjusted.
"I am correcting an inefficient trajectory."

Silence.

Immediate.

Absolute.

Arthit blinked once.
Then-
"...wow."

That was not-
a positive response.

"Alright," Arthit said, voice flattening. "Noted."

He reached for his file.

Conversation dismissed.

Outcome:
negative.

Kongpob remained where he was.

Reassessing.

The structure had been altered.

But not sufficiently.

The next attempt required-
greater deviation.

Timing adjusted.

Context simplified.

"You should not see him again."

Arthit froze.

Then looked up.
Slowly.
"...excuse me?"

Kongpob held his gaze.
"He is not an optimal choice."

Silence.

Then-
Arthit laughed.

Short.

Sharp.

"Right."
A pause.
"Say that again."

"He is not-"

"No," Arthit cut in, leaning forward now. "Say it properly."

A beat.

This was-
the variable.

Kongpob adjusted.

"You should not see him again."

"Why?"

Because-
The junior would say:
Because I don't like it.
Simple.
Direct.
Kongpob did not say that.
Instead-
"He lacks sufficient-"

"Stop."
Arthit's voice cut through, sharp now.
"Just-stop."

Silence.

"You don't get to decide that," Arthit said.

"I am not deciding."

"You are."

"I am advising."

"That's not advice," Arthit snapped. "That's-whatever this is."

A pause.

"Say it properly," Arthit repeated.

Kongpob met his eyes.

Steady.

Controlled.

"I am saying it properly."

That-
was the failure.

Arthit stared at him.
Longer this time.

Then leaned back.
Shook his head.
"...you're unbelievable."

"I've been told."

"Yeah," Arthit said, voice colder now. "I'm sure you have."

He stood.

"Don't do that again."
The words were clear.
Final.

Kongpob did not respond.
Did not stop him.
Arthit left.
Silence settled.
Kongpob remained where he was.
Still.
The attempt had failed.

Completely.

He exhaled once.
Slow.
Measured.

Then revised the conclusion.

The issue was not:
clarity.
It was-
authenticity.

The junior's words worked because-
they were believed.

Kongpob's did not.

Because-
they were not.

He had replicated structure.
Not intent.

And Arthit-
had noticed.

Immediately.

Kongpob turned away.
Movement precise.
Controlled.

New conclusion:
Directness alone-
is insufficient.
It must be-
genuine.

He dismissed the thought.
Immediately.

Genuine was not-
a usable variable.

And yet-
the outcome remained unchanged.

For the first time-
Kongpob had no immediate correction.

Which meant-
the system was flawed.

And that-
was unacceptable.
