Chapter 7
(The person in the picture above is Jackson)
The next day, at the next meeting for the social justice club, it was obvious that some of the members who weren't close to others, had gotten more comfortable in one another's presence.
As all the boys entered the classroom, Nate smiled as he watched everyone walk inside. "I wanted to thank you Lucas, for yesterday. From what I could see everyone had a really good time. We should do stuff like that once in a while. Kind of like a little 'party' for our group. Wouldn't that be fun you guys?" Nate questions in a smile, looking at everyone else, who looked like they didn't care much.
As Nate was counting heads to see if everyone was here, he was a bit surprised to see someone was missing. "We're missing someone" Nate points out before looking at the attendance for the group. "We're missing Max, does anyone know where Max is?" Nate questions, looking at anyone to see if someone had any idea but everyone looked just as confused as Nate did.
"We haven't even been in this dumb club for a week and Max is already fucking up." Kevin points out in a small mumble and a couple others around him chuckled.
"What does Max not fuck up?" Jackson comments in an un-amused tone.
"Should we wait a bit, or should we just start?" Nate questions, wanting to know everyone else's opinions.
"I-I think we should wait a bit" Ryan, who was standing off to a side, beside Nate says in a tone loud enough for Nate to hear.
Everyone turned their heads to Ryan when he spoke up, to speak up for Max none the less. "Why would we wait for him? Let's just start and get this over with." Carter scoffs in annoyance, holding his head in his hands.
"You okay man?" Todd asks in a whisper, turning his head to Carter and looking at him concerned.
"I'm fine" Carter whispers aggressively back.
Nate nodded, deciding to start the club meeting without Max present. "Okay, well we have our first project today actually. We will be working on awareness for stress high school students might have. We can make posters to put around the school, and we can make announcements in the morning. Each pair brainstorm and think of things we can do." Nate says in a smile before shooing people to get into their pairs.
As everyone got into their pairs, Todd walked up to Jacob who was like always; sitting at the front in the teachers desk with his laptop in front of him. Todd made sure to pull up a chair with him so he could sit down next to Jacob. "You seemed to have a good time yesterday" Todd starts off with saying before actually sitting down.
"What makes you say that" Jacob says in a tone like he didn't care about Todd's presence. He kept staring at his computer screen like he was trying to focus on anything else other than Todd's face.
"Because of that huge smile on your face. I don't know if it was all the fun you were having, or maybe because of what I said to you." Todd answers in a smile, the same smile he always had on his face that would get all the girls to go crazy over him.
"Why were you paying so much attention to me, kind of a creepy habit you have there." Jacob retorts.
"I don't think it's so much 'creepy' more like caring. So how about you say we hang out tomorrow...on Saturday?"
"Saturday...aren't you busy?" Jacob questions while raising one eyebrow. He was still facing the computer screen, trying to avoid looking at Todd as much as possible.
"Why do you think I'm busy?" Todd asks, he sounded amused looking at Jacob with his smile growing wider. "Come on, look at me." Todd says, turning Jacob's face so he was now facing him. Jacob's eyes opened wider when Todd suddenly turned his head and stared at him. "Well?" Todd faintly says, staring back into Jacob's eyes.
"N-No reason" Jacob stutters, loosing his train of thoughts on what he was going to say while staring into Todd's eyes.
"What're you two faggots doing over there" Carter shouts from across the room, throwing his pencil case across the room to hit the side of Todd's head.
Todd laughed out loud feeling Carter's pencil case slam into the side of his face and picked it up once it fell to the ground. "Your comments aren't needed, Carter." Todd answers, throwing his pencil case back at him.
"What, is something going on between you two? Are you and Jacob going to do it in the washroom stall down the hall or something? Huh?" Carter continues to tease as he laughed.
"Can we not...talk about this?" Ryan asks, you could tell in his tone of voice that he sounded scared and intimidated.
"Oh yeah, sorry I forgot the catholic freak was still in the room. Can't talk about Homosexuals while he's here." Carter replies before turning his chair so he could face Ethan once again.
With Kevin and Jackson, Kevin was on his phone the whole time, staring down at it rather then participating in any sort of communication with Jackson. "So are you going to help me brainstorm ideas or what?" Jackson questions, looking at Kevin with a blank expression on his face.
Kevin glanced up at Jackson who was staring at him and sighed as he turned his phone off and placed it on the desk in front of the both of them. "All we should do is put 'don't be stressed' on a couple of posters and that's it. It's not that hard." He answers in a tone like he didn't really care much at all.
"That's all we're going to put on the posters?"
"Well yeah, it's not like anyone actually stops to read the stupid posters on the wall anyway. We could put something totally offensive on them and people wouldn't even notice." Kevin replies, picking up his phone again and texting people once again on his phone.
At the same time, the club door slammed open, catching everyone's attention. Max entered the room, a glare in his eyes. Dried blood was covering his face, a dark purple bruise appearing around his right eye and his lip was split open.
Even by the way his clothes looked, it was obvious that Max had gotten into a fight before he came to the club room. "Max, are you okay?!" Ryan questions in concern, standing up instantly when he saw Max enter the club room wounded.
"Don't talk to me unless you want my fist in your face." Max growls, entering the room, sitting down at his seat. He kicked his feet up on the desk in front of him and stared at everyone else who were all staring back at him. "WHAT, WHAT'RE YOU ALL STARING AT?! GOT A PROBLEM, I'LL BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF ALL OF YOU!" Max yells, instantly standing from his seat and cracking his fists.
"No, just calm down Max" Nate tries to reassure him which surprisingly worked since Max sat back down.
"Jeez Max, you reek of alcohol, did you drink a bit before coming here?" Lucas asks, looking at Max while plugging his nose.
"If you got a problem with it, leave." Max replies in anger, the more Max was talking, the angrier it was sounding like he was getting.
Ryan looked at Max with puppy dog eyes, he looked like he was concerned about Max and was wondering what happened to him for him to look that beat up.
At the same time, Jackson got a text message. When he checked who it was from he instantly stood up while swinging his backpack over one shoulder. "I have to head out, I'm really sorry. I have work, and I can't be late. I already called in yesterday as a sick day." Jackson says before walking towards the door to leave the room.
"You have a job Jackson? Where do you work?" Kevin asks, looking at Jackson a bit surprised.
"You don't need to know." Jackson replies, leaving the club room to get home so he could get ready for work.
