Chapter 5
(Person in the picture above is Kevin)
By the end of the day, it was most likely certain that everyone in the whole school had said happy birthday to Carter. The day was a loud, chaotic mess which the teachers were probably happy that it was over. It wasn't over for the social justice club though. They had a meeting today, and Nate wasn't too sure if everyone would show up.
When everyone entered the abandoned English room, Nate was surprised. "I thought no one would show up considering it's Carter's birthday today..." Nate answers in a puzzled tone. He sounded happy that everyone came to the club.
"Well we don't have much of a choice to come here, now do we?" Max says aloud for Nate to hear. A couple of people glared at Max, but Max paid it no attention.
Lucas was sitting closely next to Max, ever since he saw Max yesterday, he's been trying to get with him. "What do you mean by that?" Lucas questions Max in confusion but Max didn't answer Lucas, more like he was trying to ignore Lucas.
"It must be nice that your first day was Carter's birthday Lucas, in all your classes you probably didn't do anything." Todd says in a smirk, turning his head to look back at Lucas.
"Yeah, I was surprised...why was it such a huge deal that it was Carter's birthday? The whole school was singing happy birthday, and we did nothing in all my classes. It was like today was some sort of special day just because it was Carter's birthday...is Carter the principal's son or something?" Lucas questions, sounding confused on what all the hype was about.
"It's like that every year when it comes to Carter's birthday. He's just that popular." Kevin answers Lucas, but Lucas didn't think that was the answer he was looking for.
Nate cleared his throat to get everyone's attention onto him which worked, because everyone was now staring at Nate who was standing at the front, like how he always was. "Since today is our first 'official' day altogether, I think we should talk about project partners."
"Project partners?" Max repeats with one eyebrow raised, he already didn't like the sound of it. He wasn't the type of person to work in pairs, or to work with others in general. He thought being in this social justice club, he could just stand at the back of the room and watch everyone else do all the work while he sat back and talked to no one.
"Yes, partners. Every year in the social justice club, we partner people off to be in duos. When we volunteer places, or do work around the school, sometimes it's easier to work in two then a whole team."
"Isn't the social justice club suppose to work as a team to make things better for others?" Jackson asks, confirming if he was right.
"Yes, that is right but sometimes when we're let's say planning things maybe to raise awareness about the pollution in our school; being in partners of two as all of us separately work on posters or presentations can be easier, and we can get a lot more done in a short amount of time. We'll all still work together as a team to discuss what we should do in aspects of the situation, but while we're doing the project, or volunteering, we work in groups of two to get it done faster and more efficiently."
"This club sounds more complicated then it seems." Kevin says aloud but Nate smiled to the comment before walking over to his backpack. As he zipped open his backpack, he pulled out a white piece of paper and walked back to where he was standing before.
"I already put you guys into pairs so I'm going to read them off. When I call out your pairs, I want you guys to sit with each other. You guys will have to hang out for a lot of time outside of the club." Nate explains and everyone seemed uneasy about the whole thing.
Nate then started calling off the pairs "Ethan and Carter, Kevin and Jackson, Lucas and Max, Todd and Jacob, Ryan and Jake. Those are the pairs, is everyone okay with that?" Nate asks, looking at everyone.
Max looked unamused that he was with Lucas, but he'd rather be with Lucas then anyone else since he at least knew Lucas better then the other people in the room.
When Carter and Ethan heard they had to be partners together, both boys looked shocked. Ethan looked more scared, but Carter was the first to protest. "Nate, I don't know if you can't see well or something, but if you can't tell Ethan and I don't get along. We shouldn't be in a group together. I want a different partner." Ethan didn't say anything but nodded his head to what Carter was saying. He didn't want to be partners with Carter, as much as Carter didn't want to be partners with him.
"I can see perfectly fine Carter..." Nate starts off with saying before explaining "I've seen how you and Ethan don't...get along, but I think being in a group can help that. This is the social justice club. We're suppose to be nice to one another and give off a good atmosphere. If you guys don't get along, how are we able to do that? That's why you two will be forced to hang out together and who knows...you guys might have some things in common that you didn't know about before." Nate explains, happy about his decision and looked like he had no intention on changing them to new partners.
Ethan sunk his shoulders when he heard Nate's response and knew that he wasn't going to give him a different partner. Carter also let out a sigh of annoyance.
As everyone was to go and sit with their partners, and talk to them for a bit to get to know them some more, Ryan walked up to Nate with his hands in his pockets. "Nate, I don't think I can be partners with Jake."
"Why not, did something happen between you two?" Nate questions, looking at Ryan worried.
"No, nothing happened between us. I don't even know Jake...but I have church programs to attend so I don't think I'll be able to work with him, and I'm afraid he might be alone sometimes when I'm not here." Ryan explains in concern. Nate nodded meaning he understood.
"Well, you are the co-leader of this club, it's not like you can't run the club either." Nate says before looking down and thinking about his decision. "I'll be Jake's partner then." Nate answers and Ryan nodded meaning okay.
As everyone went to go sit with their new partners, when Nate sat down next to Jake, Jake looked at Nate with no expression and then looked back down at the desk in front of him like it didn't bother him that Nate was sitting down next to him and not Ryan.
Nate thought, even though Jake didn't point it out, he should explain why he was his partner instead of Ryan, like how he said earlier. He cleared his throat before speaking. For some reason, even though Jake never spoke, let alone never showed any sort of expression, he was intimidated by Jake. "So, I'm your partner now...Ryan has after school programs on some days so he might not be here all the time. We decided I should be your partner since I'd probably be a more stable partner." Nate explains.
Jake nodded to Nate's explanation but no expression was left on his face. An awkward silence was left between the two of them. "I don't really think you heard it this morning...but thank you...you know, for saving me in the morning from that guy."
Jake slowly opened his mouth, answering "I heard you." His voice was so faint and soft, it was hard for Nate to hear Jake's voice at first.
"You did, really? I thought you didn't..." Nate replies, his voice getting quieter himself. He didn't know how this partnership would go, but he knew for sure there wouldn't be a lot of communication.
Todd brought his chair up to the front of the class where Jacob was sitting at the teachers desk with his laptop in front of him. "So we're partners" Todd starts off with saying, placing his chair so he was sitting down beside Jacob.
"I guess so" Jacob replies, still staring at his computer screen. He wanted to make it look like that he didn't care he was partners with Todd, but in reality his heart was beating for some reason that he didn't understand. "Out of all the partners I could have gotten, I got this guy." Jacob thought to himself.
"So since we have to get to know a bit about our partners...tell me about yourself."
"What do you want to know?"
"Hm..." Todd hums to himself, looking up at the ceiling as he thought of what he could ask Jacob, but nothing was coming to mind. He brought his gaze back down as he looked at Jacob's laptop screen and asks "what're you doing?"
Jacob instantly saw Todd staring at his computer screen and closed it so Todd couldn't see what he was doing. "Homework" Jacob answers. Todd lightly chuckled to Jacob's response which made Jacob's heart pound even faster. "Wh-what, why're you laughing?" Jacob questions, trying to make it sound like he was offended.
"It's just that you're a horrible liar." Todd answers, patting Jacob on his shoulder.
Jacob's cheeks turned a bright pink, having Todd catch him in a lie. He straightened his posture and cleared his throat before asking in a stutter "s-so what, you tell me something about yourself."
"Something about myself?" Todd repeats in the same monotone voice Jacob had slightly gave him. "Well something interesting about me is that I can wiggle both of my ears." Todd says, giving and example to prove his fact.
Jacob lightly chuckled at Todd's unimportant fact and asks "why do I have to know that?"
"Well someone might ask you if you know anyone who can wiggle their ears?"
"Who would ever ask me that- you're the weirdest guy I know!" Jacob answers in a smile, still slightly chuckling at Todd's response. His cheeks continued to stay the same light pink but he instantly looked down so he couldn't look at Todd anymore.
"Your smile is nice" Todd faintly says.
Jacob immediately brought his head up when he heard Todd say that and stutters a quick "w-what?"
"Your smile...it's nice. It's better then the frown you had on this morning." Todd explains, looking at Jacob with his own smile. He then continues to say "even yesterday when I was looking at you during the club meeting you were frowning the whole time with your eyebrows narrowed." Todd says, bringing two fingers up to Jacob's face and placing them where his eyebrows meet in the middle. He then pushed it down to make it look like Jacob was narrowing his eyebrows "like this."
Jacob looked up at Todd who was still smiling down at him and swatted Todd's hands away. "I only looked like that because I was concentrating."
"Well you shouldn't get into that habit, it makes wrinkles."
Jacob stared at Todd for another second before turning his head away once again so he didn't have to look at him anymore.
