3. The Extra Shift
Dalton's day had started off poorly. He woke up and immediately became panicked, thinking that both he and Will had slept in and were now late for his dance class. In his rush, he spilled a bowl of cereal, almost knocked over their very large book shelf, and stubbed his toe on Will's bedroom door. Then when his Asian roommate was nowhere to be found, he started freaking out again.
Fortunately, he was stable enough to have the idea to call Will, who then reminded him that David had drove him to the class. This, Dal's struggle was for nothing because of their forgotten arrangement. At least the blond's day picked up from there.
He had decided to take a nap before his work shift started. He had taken the extra shift for later in the day. Dal was refreshed after his rest and had more than enough time to get ready. He could even pick up Will if he wanted to but his friend would only be done teaching during the middle of Dalton's shift. Plus, he had been informed that this David guy would be taking the Asian home. And of course the blond would give his best friend a hard time about that detail. That's what friends are for after all.
When Dal got to the coffee shop he didn't recognize anyone except for Dana. Dalton would be working with the younger boy today. The rest of the workers were people he didn't really recognize. There was an brunet man, probably in his late twenties, an African-American girl who looked about his own age, and a old woman who looked spry enough to seem younger than she probably actually was. Dana introduced them to the blond as Louis, Sarah, and Tiffany respectively.
Then a younger brunet boy emerged from the back, adjusting his hat. It was that new kid from yesterday! Matt, he thinks his name is.
"Oh hey, Matt right?" Dal asked as they both approached the two separate cash registers, their coworkers ready to make orders behind them.
"It's Max. Hey Dalton." The kid smiled and started taking the first customer's order.
Dalton didn't have time to feel guilty about forgetting the kid's name because he stupidly took the extra shift during the rush hour. He hadn't done one of these in a while and forgot how hectic they could be. Fortunately, it was over faster than he thought it would be.
Dal checked his watch a while later and saw that Will should be out of class by then. He motioned Dana to take over for him for a second so that he could see if Will hadn't changed his plans. A quick text back and forth and he was ready to jump back in but Dana had gotten one of those customers that takes way too long to pick what they want even if they could've done so in line. This would take a long time.
Dalton sighed and waited for Dana to be done when he heard a familiar voice. It was the guy who was talking on the phone again! Did he ever put that thing down? Dal frowned as the man stepped up to Max's register, still talking. He wouldn't be able to piss him off today and that made Dalton weirdly disappointed.
"Yeah, Chris is out with the one he met just recently, the one he was telling us about? No Gabe, Abraham Lincoln. No, I haven't met them yet but maybe I'll go with Chris so I can. I'll fill you in if I do. Uh, just a second, I'm at that coffee place Chris was telling us about last week again." The man looked up and seemed to breathe a sigh of relief when he realized the blond wasn't the one taking his order. "Can I have a combo number 3 today? For Cole."
Then the man went back to his phone again. As Dalton gave up hope in humanity, Max turned around after telling Tiffany the order.
"Hey, Dal. Do you mind taking over for a second? I have to, uh, call my mom." He said, before running off to the back, "Okay, thanks man."
At first, the blond was confused. Then he realized what a fantastic opportunity had been dropped in his lap.
"Sorry, what was the name again?" Dal tried not to look or sound smug as the man across from him sighed loudly after the pause in his talking for a minute.
"It's Cole." He mumbled
Dalton, of course, instead wrote Chloe. Then when Louis yelled out the name and looked profoundly confused when the young brunet male walked up, Dalton had to stop himself from laughing to the point where Dana had asked him why his face was so red.
Dalton's shift ended an hour later, the blond was still in a very good mood when Max approached him. He was about to walk out the door at the time but the young man had stopped him before that happened.
"You're welcome, by the way." The younger stated
"For what?" The blond questioned
"That Cole guy that you're so infatuated with," Max answered, "I left 'cause you like messing up his name so much."
Dalton rolled his eyes, but he was surprised at this, "I'm not infatuated with him, and I mess up his name because he's a self-centred dick."
"Sure, whatever, but I'll be happy to help you piss him off."
The kid had spunk, Dal wasn't afraid to admit it. They shook hands and made the deal final. Then he walked back to his car to drive home, but first he would call Will to see if he had made it home yet.
"Hello?" A voice crackled as it answered after three rings.
"Hey Will, are you home yet or do you want a ride back?" Dalton asked.
"Who is this?" The blond then realized this was not Will on the phone, it was not his voice.
"I could ask you the same thing. Why do you have my roommates phone?" He tried to be cautious, he wasn't sure who this was at all.
"Oh, Dalton right? This is David. Will left his phone on the table while he went to the bathroom. Sorry man, the caller ID just read Punk Rock," Dalton's best friend was an idiot, "Anyway, we're at the ice cream place near your apartment and I'll drop Will off right away, no need to worry."
Dalton and David made quick small talk before hanging up on each other. Then Dalton started driving home. He arrived to the sight of Will and David hugging before David got back into his car and drove off.
"Behlendorf! What did I tell you about PDA in my good neighbourhood!? Ms. Pandeja is an innocent little woman William!" Dalton shouted across the parking lot, scaring his roommate so badly that you could physically see his feet leave the ground.
"Shut up Rapattoni." Will blushed as they made their way into the building and up the stairs, when they were inside Will spoke up again, "Dal, would you mind joining me in two weeks? Both David and I wanted to bring some other people who can dance into the class to show those high shoolers some other moves."
The blond didn't have to think it over too long as Will was his best friend and the day he would be invited was one of his days off. This results in no excuses not to go, so he would have to say yes anyways. This month was going to be incredibly busy.
