Chapter 18
Do you celebrate Halloween? Ya or nah?
-------------------
THE THREE WITCHES were laughing and I had no idea why. I looked at Christine but even she looked perplexed.
"You think that's ever going to fit you?" Munroe asks pointing at Jamie, her eyes filled with amusement. She wipes a fake tear off her eyes. "Unbelievable."
"It isn't-- I wasn't-- taking it out for me." Jamie stammers pulling a dress that I didn't see before off her and trying to place it back on the rack. Trying because her hand was shaking.
"Don't lie." Patrick says yanking the dress off her. It's a red short dress with an attached material at the back that was flowing downwards. It's stunning.
"We saw you eying it with love and adoration." Patrick says placing the dress on her and doing some model posses. Her group laughs again.
"Don't get me wrong." Munroe says, "its not bad to dream but maybe you should go for more realistic dreams. Like a size freaking ten."
"Watch it Munroe." I speak up, moving forward.
Munroe raises her hands, "We're not here to fight Anna, we're just saying things as they are. What's that saying again..."
"Call a spade a spade?" The new Evelyn supplies and I glare at her.
"Yes." Munroe snaps her fingers, "that one, and something about how a duck can never be a swan?"
"Or in poor Jamie's case," Patrick starts, glaring at J. "A pig remains a pig no matter what."
My legs move faster and soon my hands connect to Patrick's shoulder as I shove her back. She stumbles and nearly falls to her butt but for the hand she uses to grab a rack and steady herself. Her glare is icy.
Munroe and the newbie move closer to me, aiming to intimidate me with their postures, glare and dazzle but it doesn't work. Whilst it may have worked on any other circumstance, but now they hurt Jamie and I'm not gonna take it.
"You don't want to pick a fight with me right now, Evelyns." I warn through my gritted teeth.
Munroe glares for sometime more before she calls her lackeys off and start going but not before saying. "Jamie dear, sorry if we hurt your fatty feelings. But to make nice, we recommend whale.com. Maybe there you'll find something to actually fit you and stop being so pathetic."
I nearly jumped her but Christine held me back. I watched them leave glaring holes into their heads. Once they were out of sight, I turned to Jamie. Her either face was flaming red and she had tears pooling in her eyes.
"J..."
"Its fine." She shaky says shutting her eyes and letting fat tears roll down.
Christine and I immediately hug her. "Don't listen to anything they say. You're perfect. They're the ones with the problem." I say.
"Bloody anorexic freaks." Christine says, "I bet they get their clothes amended. They should go to crayfish.com. Foolish girls."
Jamie laughs at that and I smile, although Christine looks mad. "Maybe its Christy we should be giving a hug." Jamie says and we exchange a look then turn to hug our small petite friend.
She chuckles. "Sorry, I just hate them. And I know hate is a strong word, so are my feelings. They are so annoying and insensitive. Worst is I can't do anything because Munroe literally owns the flower shop and going against her would just mean, eviction for my aunt. I'm so sorry Jamie."
"It's fine. I shouldn't let them get to me." Jamie says wiping at her face.
"Yes, especially not when we're getting ready for something as awesome as a party." I supply and they both playfully roll their eyes.
"I guess Ian's coming?" Christine asks.
I grin, "you guess right." We turn to leave and Jamie picks up the red dress that started it all from the floor where dropped it. She keeps looking at it. "You coming J?"
That snaps her out of the trance and she hangs the dress back on the rack. "Yea. Right behind you."
**
Christine and Jamie decide to go to the party together and after much searching they find the perfect duo outfit. Two shirts, one saying Netflix and the other saying Chill. I don't see what's fabulous about it but they love it so... And Jamie reasoned that they can pair the shirts with anything.
I however haven't found my outfit yet and I'm left dragging them from store to store. I can't just pick anything. I've got to dazzle.
"This is my last shopping with you. Ever!" Christine yells and I roll my eyes.
"This is my last stop." I say scanning the area.
"It better be."
"I don't mind being dragged about." Jamie says and I smile at her.
"See, Christy why can't you be like J."
She glares, "You have fifteen minutes to find something."
"Ugh, killjoy."
I start searching and not up to fifteen minutes later I finally see a dress I like. Its all white. The top is lacy with a low bunch neck and then it flows down the waist, stopping right before my ankle. It has a pretty daring slit at the centre and is dazzling.
"Huh?" I ask with a smile on my face as I show it to them.
"Go try it on." Jamie urges and I rush into the dressing room, shedding off my clothes and trying on that one. It fits perfectly.
I look like a bride.
"Wow, you like a bride." Jamie agrees once I step out.
"A daring one." Christine smiles, "You're taking it."
I move towards the mirror examining myself. "You're not just saying that because you want to leave?"
"No, but that's one reason." She chuckles. "Its perfect, Anna."
And that wraps up our shopping adventure. We stop for lunch at a pizza palace after and get a whole box of Pepperoni with different drinks.
"J, do you happen to know where Ian travelled to?" I ask, my curiosity getting the best of me.
"He travelled?" Christine asks.
"Yea, out of town."
"Hmm, must be important if he's leaving school."
Jamie shakes her head, "I don't know. He didn't tell me anything, just told me to cover up for him."
"Hmm."
Is there nobody he actually confides in? Like a best friend or something? Well, he did come into town newly, he knows no one. It's just I and Jamie he associates with and I'll like to think I know him more than she does. And yet, I don't.
**
"Anna!" Ellie comes running in, Zoe right beside her, barging into the room as usual. I don't stress her about it because I'm not in the mood and the door was actually open anyway.
"Stop shouting." I say, pulling my dress out of the bag. I feel like I haven't admired it enough. "And running."
Ellie gasps jumping up my bed, "You got a dress?!"
"Yes, I did." I sing out, flipping down the dress and pressing it against my body. "What do you think?"
Her beady eyes are literally glowing. "Oh its magnificent!"
I giggle and move to the mirror. "I know right. What about you Zoe?"
She barks loudly and runs around me in circle fashion, her tails wagging. "Thanks hun." I reply her, feeling more satisfied about my dress.
"Is that for Halloween?" I nod, eyes glued to my reflection. "You'll be one beautiful ghost."
I quirk a brow, "ghost?"
"That's what you're going for right. Since it's all white?"
I pout, "I was thinking more like bride." Ian would look stunning in a coat. But I don't really see Ian Maurice wearing a coat especially for just this Halloween and he might think I'm trying to insinuate at something.
Which would be really awkward and messed up. Not to mention, Cringe.
Ellie claps her little hands, "a bride ghost? Perfect!"
I smile, rolling her eyes at her happiness. "What about you? Any thing planned?"
"Duh. I'm going trick or treat with my class and then we'll go over to Bella's. They are hosting this year. Can you imagine? They are always so extra, even their house is extra. I can only imagine what the party is going to be like."
I start putting the dress into a hanger, "are you for or against extra?"
"For! Duh." She rolls her eyes at me. "Who's ever gonna be against extra when it comes to fun and food. I love their house too."
I laugh, "point taken. So what are you gonna be dressed up as?"
"You."
"That's real--" I stop and turn to her. "Me?"
She eagerly nods, "I've already got the jerseys and everything with the soccer ball ready. I'm gonna be you, Anna."
I quickly drop my dress and rush back to the bed to join her. Sitting right beside her. "Now why would you ever want to be me?"
She sighs, "I asked myself that like a million times already."
I lightly whack her head. "Be serious."
She sighs again, this one not forced. "I don't know. Maybe because being you is more realistic than the angel, devil, cat and bunnies everyone is going with. Maybe its because you're awesome and I want everybody and you to know that. It could also be because..." She looks down at her fingers that she's messing with. "Because you're going away and I don't know if you'll come back."
She looks up at me with sad teary eyes. "This may be my only chance to be you. With you present."
"Ellie," I grab her hands. "Why would you ever think I'll go away and not come back?"
"You're always fighting with mum and you said you can't wait to leave." She says and I see the tears pool up.
I guess she was eavesdropping on Zoe and I.
"Ellie." I pull her tiny frame into a hug and she hugs me back. "I'll never leave you. I can never leave and not come back. I said that because I was angry but I didn't mean it. I love you and I love mum too."
"Really?"
"Really. Plus you and dad won't last a day with me."
She purses her lips in thought. "True." We burst out laughing and hug again.
"Are you really gonna dress as me?" I ask.
Ellie nods, "hell yeah and Zoe can dress as me."
I laugh. "I'll be so honoured Ellie. Wait, does mum approve?"
She shrugs, "Don't know. Don't care."
I sigh, "Ellie don't fight with mum okay. Never be like me in that aspect."
"Why can't you both get along? Like Sister Rachel," she pauses to do the sign of the cross. "And mum did."
"We do get along - sometimes. Things just got... awkward lately."
"Is it ever gonna ever be un- awkward?"
"Of course. Eventually."
I'm not sure if I believe that though. It's one of the thing I filed under my future impossible list but for Ellie, let's see.
Ellie jumps up, calling onto Zoe as she left my room. "Goodnight Anna."
"Goodnight."
With a wistful sigh, I fell back on my bed. I don't know if I'm doing this big sister thing right. Did Rachel ever make me cry? She was so perfect at everything. She got along with everybody. She always knew the right thing to say and how to act. She was never out of place. She was the kind of sister many other would love to be, even if its for just one night such as Halloween.
I smile.
I guess I'm not so bad after all.

No Ian in this chapter, I'm sorry about that. But we've got friends and family :)
How many of you have juniors? How does it feel having someone look up to you? And if you're the juniors, do you look up to your senior siblings?
