8. Connection
"Hey!"
Marinette looked up and smiled when she saw Adrien heading towards her. Setting her phone down, she took a sip from her drink as he sat down in the empty seat across from her in the small café.
"Were you waiting long?"
"Nah," she replied. "Just five minutes or so. I ordered for you." She nodded at the other drink sitting on the table and pushed it towards him. Adrien beamed as he grabbed it and took a long sip.
"My favourite. You're the best, Marinette." Adrien's eyes sparkled with glee as he set the cup down.
"I know I am," Marinette said, smirking.
"Is it just me, or have you gotten cockier the past few years?" Adrien gave her an amused smile as she paused to think. She hadn't really noticed before, but...
"Yeah, I have. Kinda weird now that I look back on it." She shrugged and took another sip of her drink. Not like she could do anything about it now.
Adrien just snorted and picked up his phone. She didn't mind, that was how they always spent their time together. They didn't need a lot of talking to have fun. It was mostly just scrolling through the internet and showing the other whenever they found something funny or stupid. Some older people might have called it uncivilized or unhealthy, but it worked for them so they didn't particularly care all that much.
After a few minutes of mindless scrolling, Marinette huffed out a laugh and then immediately sighed right after. Raising an eyebrow, Adrien looked up from his phone.
"What was that all about?" he asked.
"Tumblr has ruined my sense of humour," Marinette explained, "and I just laughed at 'BLOC' and found it a lot more amusing than I should've."
"Show me."
Marinette turned her phone in Adrien's direction. A snort of amusement escaped from his lips before he froze and stared down at the table they were sitting at.
"Oh no," he said. "It's affected me too."
Marinette nodded, leaning back in her chair. "It's a world-wide issue. I can only imagine what the next generation will find hilarious."
"I hope puns will stay as a purr-ime source of a-moo-sement." Adrien looked at her and grinned cheekily. His smile only widened when he saw her eyes narrow at him.
"You didn't."
"I did."
"I will harm you, Adrien."
"No you won't."
"Try me."
"I'm your friend."
"I have 27 more. I can live without one."
"You shouldn't declare your murder threats so loudly. Everyone will know it's you who did it."
"I might be first on the suspect list, Adrien, but innocent until proven guilty is something I live by."
Adrien and Marinette sat there with narrowed eyes, Marinette's in annoyance and Adrien's in a challenge. The moment was ruined when Adrien went to take another sip of his drink and a loud slurping sound was heard, an indication that he had finished his drink. Marinette felt her lips twitch before a smirk found its way onto her face. Adrien laughed in triumph as he got up to throw his cup away. Marinette followed in suite and they both headed out into the chilly Autumn air.
Adrien's hand brushed hers as they walked out the door. Marinette glanced down at it before looking up at his face. He didn't seem distracted, but there was a small smile on his face. Smiling to herself, she grabbed his hand and hummed when she felt him interlace their fingers. Her smile faded when she remembered that he had a soulmate, and that this was probably all just platonic like everything else had been since she had first met him, but for a moment she let herself shake away the concerns and just enjoy the moment while it lasted.
