~Chapter 1~
Death. That's all I smell in this abandoned neighborhood. I got used to the horrific smell as I had to find safer place to call home. If I were alone, I would have never stopped running and changing my whereabouts.
"Addy! How much longer?" My brother tightened his grip onto my cold hands. He rubbed the sleep of his eyes as he looked at me with his beautiful forest green orbs.
"You just woke up from a nap mister! I've been carrying you for the whole trip." I rolled my eyes at him playfully.
"But I am still tired! I am ten year old for moon goddess' sake!" He furrowed his thin brows as his bottom lip sticking out.
Aw he looks so cute!
You don't say- Hazel replied as she rolled her eyes at me. That's my sarcastic wolf for you.
"Don't worry. We will be there and have something to eat. Just remember our cover." He nodded with a small smile on his face which he tried to hide. I gave out a small giggle.
The neighborhood we were walking in was, obviously, abandoned. The buildings were cracked and some were even crumbled. Even few had been decorated with blood.
"This place is scaring me, Addy." He hid his small face in my shirt as he hugged my waist. I ran my hand through his curly red hair, my fingers getting entangled with the beautiful loops.
We have been through worse.-Hazel mentioned, a sad gaze on her face.
We were, not him.
He was with us you egghead.-Hazel rolled her eyes.
Yea. But he wasn't hurt that much.
They stabbed him with a silver knife for moon goddess' sake.
Anger ran through my veins as I remembered his innocent screams. Although my brother and I are similar in looking and maybe personality, we didn't share most things. And by most things I mean 2. He hasn't met mom and dad. He was 3 months old when the incident happened. I half of my childhood was with them. However, my brother grew up in that horrific place.
"We will find you a place to rest." I said as I rubbed his back. I picked him up and he buried his head in my neck. I wrapped my arms around him protectively.
"No." I stopped dead in my tracks, I felt few droplets of water trail down on my neck. I raised a brow and he looked at me in the face. His face filled with salty tears.
"I don't want to run anymore. We either face them or start and live a normal life. I want to have a normal childhood, Addy. Please..." His eyes producing more tears. The tears streaming down his face left trails of cleanliness.
His voice cracking and his sudden change made my heart break into millions of pieces I never knew it could. My wolf whimpered as she sat back away in the back of my mind, closing the link.
Thank you Hazel..
His cries soon turned to sobs. He immediately wrapped his small arms around my necks and tried to calm down. The tears in my eyes threatened to fall as the action continued. He sniffed and rubbed his teary eyes.
I kept on walking towards the small diner as it came to the view. It didn't look like someone would come here and cut my head off. It looked poor yet presentable.
My brother slept on my shoulders again, giving small snores. I felt his steady breathing against my shoulder as his breath fanned my neck, tickling me here and there.
I gave out a small sigh as I pushed the glass door . It gave out a small ring. I took around the place and saw it was empty. The lady behind the counter gave me a small welcoming smile as she motioned herself towards us.
She directed me to a table to my right that was beside an open window. I sat there and woke my brother up. He took few moments to understand as he rubbed the sleep off of his eyes. I sat across him with my things beside me.
The positive thing about being a hybrid, is that you can mask your scent. My brother learned how to mask it over the years, but sometimes it would slip, and that's why we would get in trouble. By masking our scents, we would appear as if we were humans.
I looked at the menu and my stomach gave out a whale noise. I looked up from my menu to see my brother clutching his stomach and laughing. Few tears started coming out of his eyes as he continued his session of laughter.
I rolled my eyes at his sudden behavior. I couldn't help but laugh along with him. These moments I would never forget. He was the last and only family I have left, and I am not ready to give him up. I never will. He just understands me despise the age. He is what glues my heart together, makes me feel special. That's the reason I am still alive. I am alive because I never want to be separated from him.
Everything he does and everything about is lovable. I would trade my life for his safety.
We ordered pancakes and waffles, with some juice. He waited eagerly, his legs dangling from the chair, his eyes spying on the door, waiting for it to open with his food.
"Addy! It's taking for ever!"
"Ace! The cover, remember?" I warned. He quickly shielded his eyes from my harmful gaze. This diner carried the scents of werewolves and humans. The waitress came into our view as the smell of fresh waffles invaded my nostrils.
Along with the delicious smell, she screamed werewolf. She was medium height and tanned. She had short wavy blonde hair and brown eyes. Her body was built as her hips swayed from side to side.
Her name tag said 'Kate'.
"Here you go! Enjoy!" She said as she placed the plates on the table. I noticed as she came closer to me, she took a sniff and furrowed her brows. I had to contain my smirk in order not to make her suspect. Her scent didn't seem she was a rogue, which means she is in a pack. Ace ate with his face shoved in the plate.
"Anything else?" She asked sweetly.
"No, thank you." She excused herself as I went back to my food. I took the first bite and my wolf howled with happiness.
We spoke as we ate about random things. He kept telling me about how he wanted to be a pilot when he grew up. Ace loved the meaning of being able to fly. It was his dream.
Of course, Ace knew who he really was. He knew that I and as well as himself were hybrids. He just didn't know of which two species.
Adelaide, you have to finish up fast. Something is wrong. Hazel warned me, panicking trailing in her voice.
What is it?
I don't really know. I have the feeling and it isn't pretty.
Do you think the she-wolf said something to her alpha?
There is a possibility. And I don't want to find out.
Me too.
I drank the last bit of my juice and closed my bag. I left the money on the table and caught Ace's hand.
He was confused at first but quickly cooperated with me. He pulled his hood over his head as I did with mine. I tucked my fiery red hair inside and my pace increased.
"You can't enter my land and expect to leave easily." The voice boomed, holding authority.
It's the alpha.
No shit Sherlock. Tell me something I don't know. Hazel replied, in the mood of being able to protect Ace.
"Act as a human." I whispered, too low for the werewolves behind me to hear. He tightened his grip on my hand, signaling me that he understood.
I turned around and faced the alpha. He had silk blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. He was taller than me by few inches. His muscular arms were crossed over his puffed chest.
"Your land? I didn't know this land was belonged to someone." I tried to sound as much as a human as possible. I think I failed.
You don't say.. of course you failed! Let me-
I cut her off, Hazel, if you show yourself my eyes will be revealed, and our cover will blow off.
Just say you are a werewolf then.
Shut up, you don't know anything. I didn't want the conversation to protest anymore, I blocked her out.
"You better come with me and your son. Come willingly and we cause you no harm." The beta, I assume, spoke as he fixed his glasses.
"I don't know you people. I have better place to go. Have a good day sir." I finished as I started to walk away.
A grip on my elbow signaled danger. My wolf fought against me for the control. I turned around and punched whoever in the face.
A crack and a growl echoed through the thin air as I was on my feet running, with Ace in my arms. Even if I said I didn't want them to be suspicious about me being human, they probably found out now. Not only for the strength, but for my speed.
"The alpha is behind us, Addy. And he doesn't look friendly." That's the last thing a remember before I felt pain rush through my shoulders.
