Chapter 41:

I ran down the stairs and flew out the front door. Ezra's car was parked in exactly the same spot it was in when we went to bed.

I pulled the passenger door open and climbed in. He was leaning his head against the backrest with his hands covering his face. I climbed over the center console and straddled his lap. I leaned my full body weight against him and he wrapped his arms around me to hold me close.

"I'm sorry." I told him, whispering into his ear. His body was shaking from how much I hurt him. I'm sorry didn't even come close to how I was feeling. I didn't trust him and he knew it. I hoped I didn't damage everything we have been building over the last few weeks. "I'm so stupid. I let her get in my head. I'm just so scared you will change your mind. It's my baggage. You didn't do anything wrong here. This is my fault."

"No, it is. I should have told you she called. It was a couple of times. She was using and I feel responsible for making her relapse. She would have been better off without me in her life, just like you would have been better off if you never met me."

"Don't say that, Ezra. You gave me the most precious gift in the world. How can you think this wasn't meant to be?" I asked him, looking deep into his eyes.

"Riley, I have hurt you physically and mentally. I took away our first baby from you. I have beaten you down time after time. I am an addict and a terrible person. I've lied, I've cheated, and I have broken your family apart. How can you still look at me the way you do?"

"Because that's not the man you are. The man I know is kind and loving, would drop whatever he was doing to save someone else, even if it means hurting himself in the process. You are a great father. That little girl up there adores you. You love me no matter which messed up thing I throw at you. You even loved me enough to walk away when you thought it was what I needed. Everything we have been through happened for a reason, Ezra. If we hadn't lost that baby in the accident, we would have never had Jessa. I can't imagine a world where that little girl does not exist. All of this got us to where we are now." I leaned in and kissed his lips willing him to come back to me again.

He pushed me back and held my arms. "You need to know. I wanted to go get high when you kicked me out. I threw my keys in your yard and locked myself in the car to stop myself from going. I just wanted a fix to make it all stop. I'm not any better, Riley."

"You didn't go, Ezra." I said, smiling. "You chose to stay this time."

I leaned back to his mouth and kissed him. He responded back finally and I felt the relief between our bodies. I moved my hips over him and he moaned into my mouth. I could feel him harden against me. This feeling with him would never go away.

I slid my shorts to the side and pulled his sweats down to take him into my hands. I teased at him and pushed him inside of me. His hands were on my hips, helping me move over him. He was thrusting into me and my body fell onto his letting him take control. He continued to move into me and pulled my face up to look into my eyes.

"Marry me, Riley." He continued to move in and out of me, staring at my emerald eyes.

"What?" I froze and my eyes widened in surprise.

"You heard me." He said, sweeping my hair back from my face.

I lost my breath and didn't know what to say to him. He pushed my hips lower down on him and started moving in and out of me again.

"You don't mean that." I said with bright, hopeful eyes.

"I want you to marry me." He said again.

"You're serious." I was so nervous he was going to take it back.

"Fuck, just say yes." He moaned, quickening his pace as he thrust his hips up to push deeper into me. My head rolled back with my pleasure. He grabbed my hair and pulled me down as far as he could so he could bury himself in me. My body began to tighten around him as I took all of him inside me. His muscles tensed as he pushed himself into me one last time.

"Riley." He moaned as he spilled into me.

I continued moving on him until my vision blurred and my movements became uncontrolled. I could barely keep myself moving. He helped steady me by holding my hips in place until I screamed out for him.

"So, is that a yes?" He tucked my hair behind my ears.

I bit my lip and nodded. I squeaked when I felt him still twitching inside of me. He would go again if I let him.

"Best proposal ever." He said, laughing and moved his hips up again. I moaned from the aftershocks when his ring hit my favorite spot. He moved again and I was shaking all over. As much as I wanted to keep going, the sun was coming up and I knew I had neighbors who would be leaving for work soon.

"Down, boy." I said, patting his chest. I pulled myself off him. He stuck out his lip and I leaned down and bit it.

"Not fair." He breathed into my mouth.

The sun was up when we walked into the house. My Mom was still sitting in the kitchen when we came in. She had cleaned up the mess I made from my outburst earlier and I felt guilty for acting like that in front of her. Ezra was still pinching and poking at me. He couldn't keep his hands off me.

"That was quick." She smiled into her cup of coffee. "You two good?"

I nodded and smiled back at him before leaning in and kissing his shoulder. He grabbed my hand and brought it to his mouth, pressing his lips against it.

"You two go upstairs and lay down a bit. I'll start making some breakfast. How does sausage, biscuits, and gravy sound?" She winked at us. She knew we were good.

"Great Mom!" I said a little too excitedly and Ezra looked at me with humor in his eyes. I had no plans to sleep.

I pulled Ezra up the stairs as fast as I could and tripped over some toys in the hall. I was about to fall on my face when he caught me and pulled me into him.

He walked me into the room and on the center of the bed sat Jessa holding a little dark blue box. I froze and looked back at him. He didn't seem surprised that either one of them was there.

"Momma, it's day." She said, smiling and reached out the box to me. "Oh, hi, Daddy." She said like she was surprised he was there.

"Here, Momma. Daddy and Jessa got a present for you." She said, proud of herself.

I glanced back at Ezra and he blushed. He looked over at the little beauty and smiled. "Jessa, did you get in my stuff again?"

"It was Mammaw." Jessa said, tattling on my Mom.

"Of course, it was." Ezra said, shaking his head. "She can't help herself."

"Here, Momma." Jessa said, reaching out the little box to me.

"Go on, beautiful. You might as well open it." He whispered into my ear. I looked back at him with tears in my eyes.

He let me go and I walked over slowly to Jessa and took the box out of her hands. I lifted the lid to the box and saw a small ring box inside. I looked down at Jessa and she was dancing on the bed as she watched me.

Ezra's hand was on my back and he took the box from my shaking hands. He opened the ring box and moved it back in front of me. I looked down and saw a large diamond with a smaller diamond on each side. The band was platinum; Ezra remembered I didn't like gold. The ring was perfect.

"Well, this wasn't exactly how I planned this in my head when I bought this." He said, chuckling at me. I could see his hands were shaking too as he took the ring out and started to slide it over my finger.

"Riley Elizabeth Davis, I have loved you since the first time I saw you. There was never anyone else for me. It's always been you."

I looked up at him through my tears and he still looked like he was scared.

"I can't promise I won't make you mad sometimes, I can't promise everything will be easy for us. I can promise you that I will give you everything I have in me until my last breath. Marry me, my beautiful girl."

"I already said yes in the car." I smiled, looking up at him and kissed his lips. Tears were streaming down my cheeks. I had never been this happy before in my life, well, except for when Jessa was born. It was a different kind of happiness. I can't explain it, but I felt whole for the first time in my life.

"I had to hear it again to make sure I didn't imagine it." He kissed me back.

"Momma, you cry? You got a booboo?" Jessa asked, interrupting us. I turned my head at her and laughed.

"No, Jess, I'm really happy." I said, laughing through my tears.

"No silly Momma, happy is this." She pulled her face into a smile and made a fake laugh. "Look at Daddy, he's happy."

"Sweet Pea, I promise I am so happy." I said, trying to reassure her.

"Daddy, I think Momma needs a bandaid for her boo boo. Go get her a bandaid." Jessa demanded.

Ezra and I were rolling with laughter as we looked at each other. Jessa was so bossy. We both bent down to tickle her until we all collapsed on the bed, out of breath.

"No tickle." She screamed out, which only made us go back in for round two. We continued to make the little girl squirm until she stopped with a serious flat face and her demon voice came out.

"I SAID NO TICKLE." She growled.

"I think she has a future in death metal." Ezra laughed, pulling us both in tighter to him.
