Chapter 33:
I turned around silently and walked towards the cinnamon roll shop and was glad to still see my bags sitting at the table. Ezra followed behind me, cooing at Jessa in his arms. She was eating up every second of it. He didn't say anything else to me until we got out to the car and he buckled her in her seat.
I went to get in my car and almost made it before he finally spoke. "Hey Ry, wait a second." I took a deep breath and closed the driver's side door back without getting in. I sighed, preparing myself for the conversation. I was not expecting to be standing in a mall parking lot today, getting my heart trampled on.
He closed the door on Jessa's side and jogged over to stand next to me. I looked down at my feet and pulled at my sweatshirt. There was a brown spot on the front that I gave all my attention to so I didn't have to look up at him. Maybe it was peanut butter from her lunch earlier today? It could be dirt, either way, it was a mystery spot of unknown origins. Fun, yucky brown spot, sitting on my shirt mocking me for thinking I stood a chance with him.
"Hey beautiful, how are you holding up?" He moved to place his hand on my arm and I moved away before he could touch me. "Whoa, what's wrong, Ry?" He said, leaning down to try to force me to look at him. I turned my head from him so he couldn't see my face.
"You better hurry before Jenna leaves." I said softly.
"She can leave if she wants to." He said, trying to pierce my wall. My silence was driving him to madness; he pushed his hair back off his head. "Riley, what did I do? Why are you mad at me?"
"I'm not mad. I'm happy for you two. It won't affect anything with Jessa. We can set up a schedule for you to see her one on one. Aiden and my Mom will help with the handoffs so we don't have to see each other much." I picked at the brown spot wishing it would come out of the fabric and swallow me.
"Riley, am I missing something?" Ezra said with total confusion on his face.
"You are with Jenna. I won't come between you two anymore. I'm sorry I threw myself at you." I couldn't look up at him.
Ezra grabbed my hands and shook them gently before pulling me into his warm body. He wrapped his arms over my shoulders and locked his arms around my neck. He leaned his forehead against mine. He was holding me tightly, but I couldn't move my arms around him to hug him back. He wasn't mine to touch anymore. He belonged to her.
"Have I ever told you how much I love your special kind of crazy?" He laughed, finding humor in my misery.
"Quit laughing at me. This is really embarrassing for me." I was growing angry and upset with every second. I tried to push him away, but he wouldn't remove himself from me.
"Riley, I told Jenna about us." He said, burying his lips into my hair. "I told her I couldn't marry her because I am still in love with you."
I looked up at him. My face screwed up in the most confused expression I have ever made in my life. There was no way I had just heard him right. I had to have imagined him saying that. It didn't make any sense. Why would he choose me?
"I... uh..." I stammered, not quite sure what to say. "You are here with her and she said you are going to dinner."
"Jenna insisted that we come up here to get our money back on the rings. We had to both be here for that. She tried to do it on her own, but they wouldn't let her without my consent since my name was on everything. We were going to go get dinner after to talk about living arrangements. We obviously can't live under the same roof when I plan on having a hot naughty blonde in my bed every night." He pulled the corner of his mouth up into a wicked smile.
"Ezra, don't tease me." I said, looking into his light blue eyes. I didn't think him playing with my emotions was very funny.
"I'm not joking. I was going to talk to you after the funeral tomorrow. I thought you had enough on your plate right now and we have a lot to talk about." He leaned into me, pressing me against the car door. I looked to the backseat of the car and Jessa had already dozed off. Ezra's eyes followed mine and he laughed.
"Good. No little eyes watching us. Now I can do this." He pressed himself harder against me and leaned his mouth down to mine. My lips parted anxiously, awaiting his tongue to trace mine. His hand went in my hair, pulling my head further back and I moaned with excitement. I moved my head from his and looked around to make sure no one was watching and dipped my hand into the top of his jeans to palm him.
"Fuck." He said with his eyes rolling back in his head. I moved my hand up his length and started dripping when I felt his ring. I raised my eyes to him when I played with it with my fingertips and he smiled. "I just put it back in last night. You couldn't possibly think I was going to get rid of that one when I know what it does to you." I bit my lip and continued to pump and twist my hand over him.
"Keep going, baby." He pressed his hands into the car to hold himself up as he cursed my name.
I moved faster over him and felt his body tightening. His body was buzzing from the electricity between us. There was no way we were going to stop now. I had to feel him lose himself to me again. There was nothing I wanted more.
"Fuck, I'm coming." He moaned. I felt the warm wetness spread over my hand and my skin flushed, thinking about what I wanted to do next. My mind was in all sorts of wrong places.
A car drove by and we jumped apart quickly. I didn't want to get caught and get the cops called on us. We were both panting and laughing at the same time. I looked down at my hand, which was sticky and wet. I would have to grab wipes out of Jessa's bag to clean up before I went home.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to..." He smiled wickedly, pretending he was remorseful for what just happened.
I sent him a look to tell him I didn't believe a word of it. He knew what he wanted to happen when he pressed himself against me.
"Fine, I'm a shit liar." He smiled down at me. "If Jessa wasn't here, I would bend you over and stick it in you right now."
My stomach tightened at the thought of having him in me. I loved every word he spoke to me, the way his eyes watched every move I made, and the way he couldn't ever seem to pull me in tight enough. This dark-haired man with the icy blue eyes had stolen my heart years ago and had never given it back.
"We're in a parking lot." I smiled back up at him and ran the hand that was still clean over his chest.
"So?" He said, raising his eyebrow at me. "Do you really not know me well enough yet to think that would stop me?" The look on his face reminded me of the boy who leaned over top of me in his bed at the band house so many years ago. The one who couldn't keep his hands to himself. The one with the confidence that radiated off him like the warm heat of the sun.
"I need to get Jessa home for dinner. Will you call me later?" I asked a little nervously.
"Can't I just come stay with you tonight?" He asked.
"Really?" I said a little too excitedly. I tried to tone down my enthusiasm so I didn't seem too eager. It didn't work; I was a little bubble caught up in the wind.
"I guess that would be a yes." He smiled. "Good. Now I don't have to find a hotel again tonight."
With one final kiss, he walked off to go find his ride. Part of me felt weird about him leaving with her, but the other part totally believed everything he just told me. I didn't know if it was just me being naïve, but this felt like the real deal this time. I prayed he didn't let me down again.
