Chapter 2: Team

A bright light blinded Nina as she woke up.

What happened?

Slowly everything started coming back, being kidnapped, her father disappearing, being rescued and William.

Nina sat up and took in her surrounding. She was in a white bright room seated on a bed. There was a white desk near the front door with two chairs facing each other. She saw a camera in the corner of the room. Did Slade capture her again? Where was William? What did they do to him?

Before she could get up and try to find a way to escape, someone opened the door.

"So I see you're finally awake."

It was William.

She felt like she was going to be sick.

"Wait... you took me? You're a liar! I trusted you! Take me to my father now! Ugh, I can't believe I was so dumb to believe you! CIA my butt!" she yelled, throwing her hands into the air.

"Nina calm down," he said soothingly. "This is much bigger than it actually is."

Yeah right.

Nina rolled her eyes, pouted and turned the other way so she wouldn't have to face him anymore.

"Hey hear me out, we're a black ops group called X. William Keller was just a cover, my name is Hunter. We were sent on a mission to find out what Slade was up to and save your father and his invention. Slade got away along with your father, but we were able to save you and miraculously get out of there. We would have taken you to some witness protection program, but you have skills. What you did back in that warehouse was abnormal. You were amazing enough to catch our eye. What I'm saying is that we want to recruit you," he explained.

There was a moment of silence.

Nina burst into laughter for what felt like a good five minutes. Hunter stood there patiently waiting for her to stop.

Nina finally caught her breath. "So you really expect me to believe that bullshit story? How would you explain you knocking me out cold?"

"It was necessary precaution, we couldn't reveal our location to you just yet. You could be an imposter for all we know," he said.

"Yeah that's why they have DNA testing genius," Nina rolled her eyes. "Can't you just let me go? I'm not interested in playing games. It's not funny, you had your laughs now just leave me alone."

"Fine, I'll leave you to think this through. Think about it, this is a once in a life time opportunity. You'd be part of something bigger than life and you'd have a chance to save your father and put down the guys that did this to you. Just consider it," said Hunter before he left the room, leaving his words like a heavy presence in the room.

His words playing over and over again in her head as she paced the room.

"Ugh!" She screamed in frustration as she kicked down a chair. She ran her fingers deep into her hair as she sat on the floor.

Nina heard the door swish open. She looked up to a find a girl this time. She was one of the most beautiful girls she'd ever seen. The type to turn heads. She had long blonde hair and cat like green eyes. She resembled a Barbie. Nina was almost envious.

Nina opened her mouth to ask her who she was, but didn't get a chance to speak.

"Listen princess, I don't know what you did to get Hunter that impressed in order to recruit you, but don't think you're bigger than us okay? Hunter didn't even need to save you! He wasn't even suppose to! Our rules consist of completing the mission no matter what. To me, you would have been a distraction. A bump in the road that I would have clearly gotten over, but no he stayed with you. I don't know why, but he seems to think in your best interest. Either go big or go home, but trust me you won't be safe in anywhere other than here. So if you do go home, you watch your back because they will come after you and you don't have the skills to survive on your own. Oh and you better not tell Hunter I spoke to you, he made it clear you were off limits," Barbie spat before storming out of the room and slamming the door behind her.

Nina's jaw dropped... What on earth just happened? Drama really followed you everywhere. Then was what Hunter said real? If they did want to capture her, he wouldn't try to get on her good side first.

A few hours passed and Nina was still in the room, her mind racing with her options. Finally, Hunter walked into the room and leaned against the door frame.

"So?" he asked, his right brow raised.

"So basically, if I say no then I get a new identity and move away being scared for the rest of my life or I become some hot spy and learn how to defend myself and help save my dad?"

"Pretty much..." he shrugged nodding along.

"Well I think the answer's obvious," she scoffed.

This made Hunter smile.

"Alright rookie, I'll get you some fresh clothes before you wash. Let me give you a debrief of the place first. Follow me," he said turning around, not waiting for her.

Nina hopped off the bed and ran after him. He had already begun his tour. "As you can see, we are in the sleeping area. If you go down this hallway and you'll get to the locker rooms. Continue straight and you'll get to the caff, were on a strict diet so don't expect any Doritos or cupcakes, cupcake. Now, if you take a turn to your right, you'll find the training area where you will learn close combat fighting, long range, weapons, and more. You continue straight and you'll find the tech area where you will learn the basis of hacking and anything tech related— hence the name. To the left, you will find the remodeling room. Here you will learn how to act like a different person— new identity, new look, all that jazz. Beside it is the weapons room, everything is under lock and key so no weapons go missing. Follow me to the lab, that is where we'll work on everything from medical to psychological. Sometimes you'll go through a tough mission so you'll need to talk it out. Finally, there's my office, I'm the man in charge so if you need anything you come to me. It better be worth it though because I got a lot of things to deal with then a cat fight."

So it was best she kept her interaction with Barbie away from him as told.

Nina nodded. "Okay, I think I got it."

"Okay, there's clothing in the lockers. Wash up, explore, meet some of the crew, do whatever you want for today. Tomorrow your training begins," said Hunter.

Then he just turned around and disappeared into his office.

"A simple bye would have been nice," Nina mumbled under her breath staring at the closed metal door.

Now where were the showers again? She wasn't going to knock on Hunter's door or he would destroy her for asking a dumb question. She returned to the path she came from. She walked passed a few doors, a big glass room that seemed to be the lab, and now a big room filled with computers and beeping machines.

"Hey there new girl, you seem lost," said a man, popping up from behind a computer screen. She did not even see him, but was glad for the human contact.

"Umm yeah, I was wondering where the locker room is," she asked. She really could not remember.

"Oh that's simple, I'll show you the way," he offered. "I'm Shadow by the way."

She let out a sigh of relief, the first to be friendly to her during her stay here.

"Oh thank you, I'd really appreciate that. I'm Nina," she said.

He laughed. "That will change in time."

Nina furrowed her brows in confusion.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"Your name. You'll get a nickname according to your skills," he said.

"Oh how'd you get yours?" she asked curiously.

"Cause I'm the hacker, you know I'm there but you don't see me. I just shadow the operation," he explained.

Interesting...

"Oh, what about Hunter?" she asked intrigued.

"Well, he's the one that recruited us so he had to go hunting for the best team. Also, he's the one that chooses the prey and exterminates it," he explained as he led her through the halls.

Nina shivered at the term exterminate. They passed by the training room. The girl that yelled at Nina earlier was there practicing with a big man covered in tattoos. There was another man sitting on a bench sharpening a dagger. When she passed by again they all stopped and starred at her.

"Why are they looking at me like that?" she whispered weary they'd hear her.

"Well, you're new and you're a girl. If you haven't noticed you're one of the two girls here, and you're very pretty," he explained like he was stating basic facts.

Nina was taken aback by his bluntness.

"Oh thanks," she blushed a deep crimson.

"And Fox over there might come out mean at first, but she's just looking out or everyone, that's why she attacked you in the holding room and yes I was watching from the camera," he explained looking a little embarrassed at his latest confession.

"I guess I can understand that," she shrugged.

"Well here we are, if you need anything I'll probably be in the tech wing," he nodded, arriving to the change rooms.

"Okay thanks a lot, it feels good to see a smile in this place," she said honestly. Fox was definitely not friendly and Hunter did not seem in the mood to be friends.

He laughed at that. "Just give the team some time to get use to you. Well, I got to get going, I'll see you at dinner."

Nina waved bye. She took a long shower trying to wash away everything that's happened, as if she could send all her problems down the drain. She practically gave up her old life and sold herself to a bunch of strangers.

She stepped out the shower and got dressed in a tank top and some leggings she found in a locker.

Nina made her way to the cafeteria, wondering what they were making and what this diet they're on is. When she walked in everyone stopped talking and stared at her. She gulped and picked up a tray. She saw Hunter filling up his tray. Nina made a beeline towards him.

"What do you want?" he asked, not giving her a second glance.

"Nothing, I just feel safer with you with them shooting lasers with their eyes," she admit in a whisper.

"Then go make nice and learn to let me go," he said sternly.

Hunter turned around.

"Where are you going?" she panicked.

"My office, don't follow me," he said over his shoulder.

Nina pouted. She grabbed an apple and a bottle of water and went to sit down on an empty table.

"Hey Nina come sit with us!"

It was Shadow. He waved her over from the full table

There was no escaping being put on the spot like that. Nina grabbed her stuff and dragged herself to his table.

"Hi," she whispered as she sat down beside Shadow.

"Guys, this is Nina, Nina this is the crew," he said pointing back and forth between them.

"This is everyone?" she asked, a little surprised.

"Yeah, we're only six and there's Hunter," said the man with the tattoos. "I'm Wolf. Field agent."

Nina opened her mouth to reply but a man with the most unique blue eyes interrupted her.

"I'm Sky, I'm the one that gets you guys places," he said, then patted the big bald man next to him. He seemed older then the rest. "And this here is Rock, he doesn't say much. But he's also a field agent and weapons expert."

"I'm Doc," said the guy with the glasses seated on the other side of Shadow. "I'm in charge of medical."

Wolf kept whispering to Fox, but she kept shrugging him off. Wolf gave up. "Well this is my girl Fox. She's a bit shy. But she's also a field agent."

They all laughed at that.

Fox did not seem amused at all. "Ha ha, very funny guys."

Nina smiled fondly at the group.

"You guys seem close."

Relationships like this were hard to find.

"Yeah, we're like a family. Someone hurts one of us... Well it won't be pretty," said Fox, it sounded like a warning. Nina heard it loud and clear.

"I understand," nodded Nina.

Wolf leaned his forearms on the table.

"Hey ease up new girl, you're one of us now... How did you get in anyways? Hunter is very picky when it comes to recruits," asked Wolf.

"Or maybe cause she's hot, I wouldn't mind getting in on some of the action," smirked Sky earning a chuckle from the guys. Sky, Shadow, and Wolf high-fived each other. Fox slapped slapped Wolf on the arm with a scowl.

"Come on boys, show the lady some respect," said Doc from the side. Nina gave him a thankful smile.

Someone cleared their throat.

"She's a gymnastics specialist and parkour enthusiast, so she was able to dodge the enemies and get past obstacles," said Rock. Nina was surprised by the roughness of his voice but the gentle nature in which he spoke.

"Oh, oh, the big guy spoke!" said Sky patting him on the shoulder.

"I know! She's like cat woman. The way that she made it out of that warehouse. I mean, even I'm impressed," expressed Shadow.

"Oh shut up, you and your comics." Fox rolled her eyes.

"Yeah Shadow has a point, she's like slick and sexy," said Wolf, counting on his thick fingers. This earned a frown from Fox.

"Let's call her Kitty," added Sky.

They all paused, as if taking it in.

"I like it, it even has that innocent factor going on for her," stated Doc.

They all nodded in agreement. This made Nina smile. "So I got my nickname now."

"You're officially family," grinned Shadow before engulfing her in a tight hug.

"Ha ha, you sly guy," chuckled Sky, getting up and joining the hug. "Group hug, gather in."

Wolf got up and dragged Fox with him, Doc joined the hug too. Rock grumbled.

"Hey come on Rock, join us!" Sky exclaimed.

"No."

He let out a grunt.

"Finish the initiation!" Sky chanted.

"You're crushing her," Rock pointed out.

"Join us," encouraged Shadow. Rock shook his head before getting up and walking away.

"You really are crushing me," groaned Nina, trying to free her body.

"Let go of me," Fox snarled at Wolf who still had a hold on her.

"Fine, come on Shadow. There isn't enough love in this room," snorted Sky.

"You took the words right out of me Sky," sighed Shadow.

"You guys are losers," Fox rolled her eyes.

Nina laughed. "How long have you guys been here?"

"Since I got nailed for hacking into the presidents personal computer, it was either join or be executed... so seven years ago," said Shadow as if it were a typical memory.

"Yeah, one of the originals, huh Shadow. I'm one of the newest recruits, been here for two years after fighting a group of cops. I brought down thirteen until backup came," said Wolf.

"Good thing too or else Sky would have continued hitting on me. I came here five years ago, arrested for attempting seducing some ambassador, how would I know he was gay?" Fox scoffed.

"Come on baby, it was only for a year and a few months. Wolf got recruited a year after I did and beat me up before he realized I'm a natural flirt," Sky added with a sigh. "Here's my story, I was a daring and dashing teenager and my dad was a pilot. So one day I took his plane, crossed restricted area and got chased by government jets. If I had a better plane I would have gotten away."

Nina nodded her head taking it all in.

"I have a photographic memory, I was brought here right after medical school along with Shadow," said Doc.

"What about Rock?" Nina asked curiously. He wasn't here to explain himself.

They all looked at each other before looking back at her.

"Well, no one really knows but I think he crushed a man's head with his bare hands," said Shadow.

"No, I heard it was for selling weapons in the black market," said Fox.

"Naw man, I heard he took on a whole police force with just a bullet," Wolf exclaimed.

"Okay, that's clearly impossible. He was probably caught for illegal trading," Sky shook his head.

"See, black market," said Fox.

"You're all wrong, he told us this once two years ago on September 7, no one bothered listening. He lived in the woods with his father. His father was a conspiracist, he believed the government was out to get them and if he didn't know how to defend himself he'd die," Doc revealed.

That was crazy.

"Oh, that must have been tough growing up in isolation," said Nina with raised brows.

"Yeah, can't you see he's anti social," said Sky.

That explained everyone but one person.

"Then how did Hunter get here?"

"Hunters the man, no one gets into his business. He found us all and knows every little secret about us, but no one knows a thing about him," said Shadow. "I would know, I tried finding files on him through every database- he doesn't exist."

"Yeah, but his mysteriousness adds to his sexiness," said Fox.

"Hey, I'm right here you know," frowned Wolf.

"Please, you're allowed to check Kitty out and if I say anything about Hunter you get mad. It's good to have a girl around here, I miss gossiping," sighed Fox.

Wolf opened his mouth and closed it. Fox smiled victoriously. They all laughed at the two.

"Come of Kitty, lets go to your room," said Fox.

Nina got up and followed. Fox got over her grudge fast. She couldn't say that she wasn't relieved at the change in attitude.

"Okay so this is the recruitment room where we hold new recruits like we did on the first day, it can only be open from the outside so you can't escape. This room here is Rocks, beside him is Doc. Across from Rock is Shadow, next door is Sky, across is Wolf, next to him is moi, and your room is right across from mine!" Fox said.

"Where does Hunter sleep?" Nina asked looking at the next few doors.

Fox raised and eyebrow and smirked. "His room is around the corner, gets his own special luxurious suit, but the guy would rather sleep in his office that way he gets more work done."

"What does he do anyway?" Nina wondered.

Fox shrugged.

"He has a lot of paperwork to do, stuff for the president, our financial issues, he's also the mastermind so he has to plan out everything strategically with like fifty different backup plan. So it's actually rare that he hangs out with us, only on missions or if we yell at him to take a break," explained Fox.

Nina nodded her head. They went into her room.

"So here is your closet, it only has workout clothes for now, but once we get your size you'll have your mission clothes in here," said Fox. "I can't wait to dress you up! And do your hair, you have beautiful hair. Finally another girl! Things are turning up," squealed Fox.

Nina laughed. "Thank you. Is it really that hard to be surrounded by all these guys?"

"Are you kidding me? They're hot and being the only girl means you get all the attention. But it's nice to be a girl instead of one of the guys every once an then," she stated.

"They are hot," laughed Nina. Fox joined in the laughter.

"Who really caught your eye?" Fox asked, a curious gleam in her eyes.

"Ummm not sure, Sky has these amazing eyes, but he seems a bit..."

"Like Sky, ew-"

Nina laughed. "Then there's Doc, he seems like a gentleman who would treat you right,"

"I'm more of the bad boy type," said Fox.

"Well Shadow has this cute nerd aspect to him, sort of like Reid from Criminal Minds,"

"What's a Criminal Minds?" Fox furrowed her brows before shaking her head. "What about Hunter?"

"I don't know Hunter. It's like you can't really get to know him. First he had this whole hero thing going for him, then he was a bit of a jerk, then he was sweet and complimenting. He also has this sad look in his eyes that makes your heart reach out to him. Don't forget his dark and mysterious side," Nina answered, counting all the things she'd noticed about the man.

Fox smirked.

"Wow Kitty, talk about going big. I tried hitting on Hunter, he didn't react. He might be gay... But then again he didn't react to the guys either. To answer your question, yes they have tried," she said.

Of course they did.

"I dunno, I've always been a sucker for a broken bad boy... Just look at my old boyfriends," Nina shook her head remembering the guys she had been with. "What is it that you like about Wolf?"

"I don't know, we use to be like cats and dogs. He would try to hit on me I would reject him. He and Sky would have these little competitions over who's the better guy. It was fun like a game at first, until I realized I started to like him. And there's something about the way he smiles and the way he looks at me and makes me feel," smiled Fox.

"Awe, that's sweet... You really seem to like him."

Nina was almost envious.

"We're in love, but Hunter was against the whole idea of relationships within the facility. He said that feelings will compromise the mission. We have a policy, like I mentioned before, complete the mission no matter what. So if Wolf was caught I'd have to leave him behind and complete the mission. So my feelings might jeopardize the whole thing," Fox explained.

"So what then?"

"I love him, I won't just breakup with him because of the mission. We both knew the risks, but went for it anyways," she said.

Nina smiled. "You're sort of my hero. That was motivational, I can't imagine living in this bunker emotionless."

"Oh you can say that twice. I'm going to let you get ahead in your sleep. Training is going to be tough tomorrow believe me," said Fox with a little shudder.

"Oh, but who's going to train me?" Nina raised a brow.

Fox grinned. "Hunter."
