Chapter 1: Capture
Dr. Delmar stood trembling in the middle of a warehouse with guns pointed to his head. He had been held captive for a few days now.
"No you can't make me do it! It's my life's work! I'm not going to let it be used for this atrocity! These are innocent people!" Dr. Delmar cried. He wouldn't let his captors use his invention to hurt others.
A tall thick man dressed in a well tailored suit walked up to him. He was the one behind it all. The big boss. Slade Carson.
"There is no such thing as innocence. This world revolves around power and money and I plan to gain the most of it. Last chance, do it by will and go down in history or we'll have to result to alternative methods," smirked Slade.
"You're gonna kill me anyways so kill me now," said Dr. Delmar raising his jaw bravely.
"You know I can't kill you, you're the only one that knows how to build, repair and destroy your machine. For precaution, we've considered leverage... Bring her in," gestured Slade with a thick finger.
A girl was dragged in with a blindfold around her eyes, hand cuffs tying her hands in front of her, and her lips are trembling. This time, Dr. Delmar did not bother hiding his fear.
"Nina!" yelled Dr. Delmar trying to get to his daughter, but before he could take a step, the men holding guns to his head stopped him.
"Daddy!" Nina called back still blindfolded.
"Let her go you monsters! She has nothing to do with this!" begged Dr. Delmar.
"Oh but she does. Build the machine or she dies," threatened Slade.
"If you lay a finger on her, I swear-"
Slade lifted a gun and pointed it at Nina's head. "You swear what? She won't be harmed as long as you build my machine."
Nina let out a choked sound at the feel of a cold barrel against her head.
"Promise me Slade," demanded Dr. Delmar.
Slade lowered his gun and smiled. "You know I'm a man of my word."
He looked at his men and nodded in Nina's direction. "Take her away."
Two men grabbed Nina and began to drag her towards the door.
"No! Nina! Where are you taking her?" yelled Dr. Delmar.
"Daddy! No, let me go! Daddy!" cried Nina, thrashing trying to get away.
"She's going to be locked away until you build it. Once you're done you can see her again," Slade let out a low rumble.
"Nina, it's okay honey. I'll get you out of this. Stay strong," promised Dr. Delmar.
"DAD! NO! LET GO! DAD!" cried Nina.
"I'm sorry honey," Dr. Delmar wept.
Nina kept fighting every step of the way, even when she was dragged out the room.
"Where are you taking me?" she asked the men who pushed her along.
"Don't worry angel, as long as your father follows orders then you'll be alright," said the guard to her left.
"What are you doing to him? Leave him alone!" she demanded. He was just a researcher!
"Let your dad worry about himself, with a face like yours there must be many bad men around," said the guard on the right.
She could hear the meaning the behind his words.
"You're a disgusting animal," she spat. The fact that she couldn't see due to the blindfold made it all the more frightening.
"Hey Bill, come on now. We can't hurt her, boss' orders," said the one to her left.
She could almost sigh in relief.
"It's not really hurting her, she'll live. Come on Carl, don't tell me you don't want to? We never get any action around here," said Bill.
Her heart dropped.
A few moments passed.
"Fine, make it quick," said Carl.
She was going to be sick. Nina panicked and shoved Bill against the wall and started to run. She ripped the blindfold off her eyes wincing at the bright lights in the narrow hall.
Someone's arms wrapped around Nina stopping her from escaping. Carl. She started to scream. She was not letting them rape her. She bit his hand making him loosen his grip giving her an opportunity to break free. She jumped behind him and put her handcuffs against his throat using him as a body shield like she'd seen in a movie. It was just in time. Bill started shooting at her, hitting Carl instead. A sound left her lips. She couldn't believe Bill just killed him. She felt Carl drop in her arms. He was too heavy for her to haul around.
"I can't kill you, but I can make you lose an arm," he yelled.
Nina dropped Carl and continued running. Bill came out from behind her and tackled her before climbed on top of her.
No. No. No. No.
"Got ya," he smirked.
BAM!
Blood splattered everywhere before Bill fell.
Nina started to scream. She pushed Bill's heavy body off her, her whole body trembling at the amount of blood there was.
"Hey calm down. Stop screaming! You'll attract others," said a man in black armour. Did he just save her? She eyed the gun in his hand before looking at him debating if he was friend or foe.
He seemed to be in his mid to late twenties. Normally, Nina would have thought he was good looking if it weren't for the fact that he just killed a man.
Nina reached for Bill's gun and pointed at the man in black. "Stay right there! What do you people want from us, just let us go!"
"Ma'am, calm down. I just saved you, we're on the same side," the man tried to reason.
She wasn't having it. Not after everything.
"Who are you?" she demanded, her fingers tightening on the gun.
"Special forces, I should be asking the same thing? Why is everyone trying to get you?" He lifted a brow.
"Show me some ID first," Nina ordered.
The man threw his badge and ID to Nina. He was actually government. She couldn't believe it. Relief coursed through her.
She nodded and threw it back. "Well William Keller, I'm Nina Delmar."
"As in Dr. Delmar's daughter?" he asked, brows rising high in surprise.
"Yes, please you have to save him," she begged.
"Do you know where they're holding him?" asked William, his expression turning serious.
"Yes, we need to hurry please!" pleaded Nina. She just needed her father safe.
They start running until they reached double doors. William turned to Nina and grabbed her by the shoulders staring straight into her eyes, "Okay kid stay right here, if I'm not out in five minutes you just run and if you get caught use the gun you shoved in your pants when you thought I wasn't looking."
"You saw that?" she mumbled feeling embarrassed. She wasn't risking walking this warehouse without protection of her own. Even if she had never fired a gun before.
"Yeah, nothing gets pass me," he winked.
"Wait, how do I use it?" Nina asked sheepishly. He didn't tease her about it.
William grabbed the gun from her hands and explained. "First, turn safety off. You pull this part back like this, aim, and pull the trigger, got it? Keep your grip strong. You probably won't hit them on your first try, so keep on shooting and run."
She nodded along absorbing this information.
"Great, I'm coming with you," said Nina.
"No you're not, just find your way to the land past the west wing. There's a helicopter there, tell them I sent you, they'll protect you," he assured her.
She could tell that there was no way he'd let her in there.
"Alright, alright. Just go save my dad," she said.
William nodded his head and went in. After a few minutes she heard shouting and guns being shot. Nina held her breath and peeked through the doors, she saw that they were too focused on William. Nina crept into the room hiding from crate to crate getting closer to her father.
"Hey you stop right there! Someone... get her!" yelled out one of the guards finally seeing her.
Crap.
Nina ran towards a crate pushing her body up with a kick, she grabbed on to the edge of the crate and pushed herself on top. She began jumping from crate to crate. She got closer to her father. She jumped on top of a soldier bringing him down. Nina jumped off a wall and kicked the other soldier approaching her. She rolled under the other's legs. A big guard stood in front of her now, Nina laid a hand on his shoulder and flipped over him and continued running towards her dad who was being dragged to the elevator yelling her name.
Almost there.
Someone stood between them and aimed a gun at her, causing Nina to freeze. Suddenly, the man was shot in the middle of his forehead and fell. Nina looked for the agent and he gestured that he had her back. She smiled at him and continued running. Two soldiers stood in her way and the elevator now. She kicked one in the shins and he fell. She used his body to boost her jump as she flipped past the second one.
Now she saw her dad two meters away from her in the elevator.
"Nina leave while you can! Go, go! Please you'll get killed! Slade do something!" Dr. Delmar yelled watching this all unravel.
Nina screamed. "Dad, stay strong! I'm going to save you!"
Slade yelled. "Don't kill the girl, you idiots! I want her alive!"
Nina finally reached the elevator, but a guard jumped in front of her. She took out her gun and point it at him. This only made the guard laugh before he started reaching for her. William's faint voice was yelling SHOOT! She had to take him down. Nina's heartbeat was pounding against her ears. She hesitated, fingers trembling around the trigger. Finally, she lifted the gun high and hit it against the guard's head. The man dropped unconscious.
Ding! Nina looked up to see the elevator rising. They escaped. Her father was gone.
Someone shook Nina.
"Hey, we have to leave now," said William.
Nina was still frozen at the elevator not being in the right state of mind. William grabbed her by the cheeks, forcing her to look at him. "Come on. We're outnumbered."
"He's gone," she mumbled, still in shock of losing her father.
"Don't worry, we'll get him back, just move!" ordered William.
"Promise."
"What?"
"Promise, you'll get him back."
"Now's not the time to-"
"Please!"
"I promise. Come on," William grabbed her arm and started running towards the exit. With his other arm he started shooting. He threw Nina and himself behind a wall for cover.
"Unit, we're surrounded. Abort. Target has left the building. Civilian acquired. If we're not there in ten minutes, you leave. Do you copy? No. You follow my orders, don't make me repeat myself again. Do you copy?" The agent spoke into his ear piece.
"Who's that?" asked Nina.
"My team," he replied.
"How many of them are there? Can they help us get out?" she hoped.
"Let me deal with getting us out," he said.
"I can help." Nina assured him.
"Not unless you can find an alternative exit point... Hey Delmar, where the hell are you?" William looked around for her.
"Will! Over here," whispered Nina from beside a crate a few steps away. "Give me a lift."
"Nina, this isn't a game, you can get hurt," frowned William.
"I know, now give me that lift," said Nina. William put his hands out and Nina jumped off them reaching for a bar. She grabbed on to it throwing herself to a higher level. She reached down to pull William up. He gave her a 'are you serious' look.
"Come on! Before someone sees us," she pleaded. William grabbed her arm swung himself up. Nina groaned loudly in pain.
"Are you okay?" he asked, seeing her turn all shades of red.
"Holy cow! You should lay off those Big Macs!" she panted rubbing her shoulder.
"Sweetheart, this is all muscle," he winked. "Now, what's your great exit strategy?"
"There! The window! It's a bit high, but it's better then a few holes in our bodies," she said.
"Fine, I'll take it from here, we don't have much time," he said. "What is your problem by the way? I told you to run."
"I'm not that defenceless and no offense, but I wanted to save my father and I didn't know if he was your priority," Nina admitted.
He narrowed his eyes at her for a moment, not saying anything.
"What are you really? Those moves weren't moves of a typical kid," he said wearily.
"First of all. I'm not a kid, I'm twenty two. Secondly, I was a professional gymnast and did ballet for a bit too," she explained counting them on her fingers.
"Okay twinkle toes. I admit that was pretty impressive, but do you plan to dance your way out?" he asked.
Nina rolled her eyes. "I was also into parkour, we usually tried to get chased for a real challenge. I've never been caught and don't plan on it. You see those two guys over there, I'm going to need their clothes."
"I'm not even gonna ask," he said. He jumped down and punched one guy in the nose and banged the other guys with the wall. Nina joined William in trying to take their clothes off.
"What do you want with them?" he asked.
Nina explained. "Tie them together, lets make a rope."
"I like the way you think Tumbelina," he winked.
"Thanks," Nina blushed.
"Now Einstein, how are we gonna reach that window?" he asked.
"Watch and learn pretty boy," she smirked this time.
Nina jumped on top of a crate before walking to the end of it and ran to the wall with the window. She ran up the wall and lunged herself at the window. Nina sat on the window sill throwing the rope down for William. He smiled looking impressed before imitating Nina using the rope as support.
"Hey, I see them!" someone yelled.
"Hurry!" she said.
Bullets started hitting the wall.
"Distract them Nina!" ordered William.
Nina's mind frantically looked for a distraction. Finally she pulled out her gun and started shooting at any target she can acquire.
"Someone get the girl!" someone yelled.
"Don't kill her you imbeciles or the boss will have us killed!" yelled another.
William finally reached the top. They threw the rope down to the other side. William gestured for Nina to go first.
"No, if they catch me they'll let me live, you on the other hand... Just go! Hurry! I'll follow!" said Nina.
William objected. "I'm not leaving you here, I can fight them off-"
Before he could object any more, Nina was threatening to push him out the window. He grumbled in defeat before starting to descend. Once he was almost down, Nina started to make her way down as well.
"That's great Nina, you're almost there!" He assured her from the ground.
"Hey!" Nina looked up to find a soldier trying to pull the rope back up. "Stop right there Delmar!"
She could hear voices starting to approach them outside now.
"Nina jump!" William yelled.
"No, it's too high!" she said peaking down. She held her breath at the distance.
"I'll catch you!" he promised. She had no choice but the trust him at this point.
Nina closed her eyes and held her breath before letting go. She landed safely and not so comfortably in the agent's arms.
"Guess we both should lay off the Big Macs," he grunted.
"Are you calling me fat?" she gasped.
He rolled his eyes.
"Now's not the time, let's go. Three minutes and counting, you better run for your life," he said.
Nina and William started running towards the west wing.
"Will wait, we won't make it on time on foot!" Nina pointed out.
"What do you have a magic teleporting elephant lying around?" he asked unamused.
"No, but there's that," she said pointing to an ATV.
His eyes sparkled in relief.
"Oh sweet lord! I think I'm in love! You're a miracle Nina!" He cheered. "Charlie, this is alpha. We have evacuated the building, now leaving the perimeter. We will be arriving in two."
William turned on the ATV and raced them over a fence and over a few hills and slopes until reaching a black helicopter.
Nina started to laugh at the sight. "I can't believe we're free!"
"Not yet sweetheart, let's get out of here first," said William gesturing towards the aircraft. "After you."
Nina hopped on the helicopter, but everything went black when someone grabbed her from behind and covered her face. Maybe she was never really free after all.
