Chapter 8

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" A pissed off Audrey demanded of me after barging into my cell, gun in hand.

"You're going to have to give me more information than that if you want me to know what you're talking about. Traitor." I replied evenly.

I was silently calculating my chances of getting past her and out the now open door, while trying to kill her with my stare. I stopped and had a moment of realization. If this is a prison, then the guards won't leave the door open unless there are additional levels of security. My hope shrank. Brilliant.

Audrey only seemed to become enraged at my answer. "I'm asking what the fuck you did to your drone Leah you smart ass." She snapped.

"Ok, back up." I was now legitimately confused and growing more agitated. "First, what is a drone and second, what does it have to do with Leah? What have you done with her? Is she safe? Where is she?"

Audrey's grip on her gun tightened and I hoped like hell she wasn't about to start shooting. I just wanted to work then go to university before finding a partner and settling down. But apparently fate wanted me in a room with a psycho girl that had a gun. Only I could pick the hottie with a psycho streak.

"Stop playing dumb, Violet Charr." Audrey said, the tone of her voice indicating that she had gotten her emotions under control. "This will be a lot easier for both of us if you cooperate."

"I have no idea why I'm here or what a drone is." I replied. Audrey considered my statement but still looked a little unconvinced.

"I cross my heart and swear on my father's grave. Could I get you to please put the gun down, it's scaring me."

Audrey stood in the entrance to the cell for a full 10 seconds before making her decision. She shut the door and I heard the locking mechanisms slide into place. Once the door was sealed she relaxed her grip on the firearm and lowered it.

"Just so you know Violet, if you do anything funny the guards watching us will instantly flood this room with sleeping gas. I promise that when you wake up, you'll be in far less comfort."

"What can I possibly do to hurt an armed psychopath?" I shot back. "But if it will make you feel better, I won't get off this bed. Promise" I stated, my hand on my heart.

Audrey seemed to relax, if only a little bit.

"Do you know why you're here and what you are?" Audrey asked.

I must admit, this made me mad. I'd just answered this question. "My name is Violet Charr, I'm an 18 year old girl and after a freaky night I'd rather forget about, I was drugged and fucking kidnapped by a psychopath. Beyond that I have absolutely no idea. I can't read minds!" I was panting a little now.

Audrey looked at me for a while, weighing up her next words carefully.

"You are an Original vampire." She simply stated. I was going to retort but Audrey swiftly held up her hand up to silence me preemptively. "We did a DNA test on you when you were unconscious and found no human DNA in you at all. Not even the Original vampires have been that pure for hundreds of thousands of years. What we can see is that you were indeed born of your human parents. It's just by some incredibly small, even miraculous chance, the diploid genome, which makes up the human species, has had a chromosomal rearrangement brought on by the tiny portion of vampire DNA that every human has. The result? A pure Original."

Audrey stopped to let me process that information.

I would have instantly rejected everything she just said, if it weren't for my glowing eyes and the fact that I literally ripped 15 guys apart. Effortlessly. Which, needless to say, scared me. Not just scared, terrified me.

"Ok, hypothetically speaking, if that were to be true, what does that mean for me?" I asked, my voice sounding small.

"We actually have no idea." Came the rather surprising answer. "I'm only in here because you have done nothing a normal vampire is meant to do. For example a vampire does not eat human food, they only drink human blood. Yet here you are, refusing blood and eating like a human."

"I AM human." I stated adamantly.

"The other odd thing is your drone." Audrey paused, seemingly ignoring my statement, as if something occurred to her. "Do you really not know what a drone is?" She asked.

I shook my head. This conversation was not what I had expected from a gun wielding lunatic, but she was much closer to the sweet girl I met at the party now that she'd calmed down.

"A drone is what is created when a human being consumes the blood of an original vampire. It's long been believed that a vampire's bite will turn you into a vampire. But it's simply not true, bites have no power at all."

"However, when blood is ingested, it gives the victim a small amount of power and binds the victim to the vampire forever. They no longer have there own mind, free will or the ability to think for themselves. They can imitate it for a while though. They believe whatever their master believes and follows whatever orders they're given without question and with absolute loyalty. Without direction given by their master, a drone will simply do nothing until it perishes." Audrey paused to let me absorb that. "They're identified by the small glowing ring around the outside of their eyes. The ring is always in the color of their masters eyes"

Realization hit me. I remember the green glowing rings in Leah's eyes. I began to panic. Well I would have except apparently Audrey wasn't finished yet.

"The other thing that makes you different to any vampire ever mentioned in the history book is that Leah, still has a mind of her own."

Now I was confused. Didn't Audrey just tell me that a drone is basically stripped of their personality and mind?

"We did some tests while you were unconscious. We discovered that not only can Leah say bad things about you, she can make decisions and form her own judgments with her master deep asleep." She indicated to me with her hands as she said this. "This should be impossible and has never been recorded to have happened anywhere in your or our history." Audrey's voiced softened as she spoke about Leah.

"So, in short, we're not actually sure what you are to be honest. Your DNA and abilities clearly state you're a vampire, but your actions say... different." Audrey trailed off.

"Wait." I said. "If everything you just said is true, then how the hell did Leah become my drone?" I gestured with air quotes with the word drone.

"We found out the answer to that pretty easily actually." Audrey chuckled. "Do you remember the accident you two had at your year 8 school athletics day?" I nodded, remembering colliding with Leah in the 400 meter sprint. We both ended up on the ground with cuts and bruises. "Well during that accident, some of your blood got transferred to Leah." Audrey continued. "That's all it took."

I was beginning to feel uneasy. My gut was telling me that Audrey was speaking the truth. Even though there is no way in hell, IN HELL, that I would subject my best friend to becoming a drone willingly! I don't think I will ever be able to apologize enough to her.

"You've been summoned by my father, the current leader of the hunters." Audrey said, breaking my chain of thought before it became doused in depression.

"Do you promise to not make any trouble if I escort you out of here to go and see him? Please understand that while this may all be new to you, the people here have been raised to hunt and kill vampires. They're afraid of you and only time will tell if they're justified in that fear."

Somewhere in my mind I could have sworn that Audrey trusted me a little bit. Vampire or not.

"I promise." I said, eager to get out of this cell.

Audrey nodded at the ceiling before telling me to get up and follow her. I was glad to get off the bed and stood up.

I heard the door hiss as it unbolted itself and Audrey opened it. Allowing light from the outside to flood in.

I followed Audrey outside into a bright, white corridor. I continued to follow her as we passed another two security doors, confirming my theory that forcing my way out of that cell would do nothing.

After passing the third security point, we stepped outside. Judging by the sun it was mid afternoon. I was in a compound enclosed by a wall. It was fairly large with people scurrying about their business.

I also noticed that everyone tensed up when they saw me and made sure to give me a wide berth.

"Oh, I should have mentioned." Audrey said in an offhand manner. "Vampires react badly to the sun. While it won't kill them, it will leave them in crippling pain after a minute or so. As you're perfectly fine in the sun, it just adds to the mystery of what you are."

Oh great. Apparently these people really wanted me to be in crippling pain or dead. I rolled my eyes, not giving Audrey the satisfaction of a reply after her sadistic stunt.

As we approached the centre of the compound I saw that we were heading for a round building, which we entered immediately upon reaching.

The inside of the building was similar to a plain version of the courtroom from Harry Potter. The centre of the building was the lowest point with raised seating all around the outside. There was no podium or area that signified it was for someone more important than others. All the seating looked the same.

Sitting in one of the seats was the only other person in the building. His stormy grey eyes framed by his wrinkled face instantly giving away his parentage to Audrey. He must be in his 50's at least and he looked tired. Not physically, more like he'd seen a lot in his lifetime, violence or otherwise.

"Welcome, Violet Charr." He greeted me with a voice that seemed to carry impressive power. "I've been dying to meet you."
