Chapter 7
I woke up to a pounding headache, no doubt caused by whatever I was injected with.
I sat up, apparently too quickly, as a wave of nausea hit me. I could have sworn my stomach was still empty from the last round of throwing up.
After the wave of nausea passed I took a look around the room I was in.
It was a fairly small room with concrete walls, floor and roof, as well as a heavy metal door. There were also no windows. I was sitting on an army style single bed made out of steel.
In one corner of the room, not separated from the rest of the room in anyway, stood a shower, sink and toilet. A mirror hung over the sink. There was also a small fridge humming in the corner and a bookshelf.
"What the hell?" I thought to myself. "Am I in prison?" Although the room was far from dark, there didn't appear to be any lights present.
I got up and went to the sink, pleased to find a new toothbrush and amenities present. As well as some fresh, albeit plain, clothes.
I took a shower, washed my hair and brushed my teeth, finally starting to feel human again.
I looked into the mirror to finish drying my hair and saw my eyes. My entire iris was gently glowing in brilliant green. Normally I would have freaked out about such a thing, but I've had so many bizarre things happen to me since I woke up in hospital that my ability to react was completely drained.
"I would probably qualify to join a circus as part of their freak show at this point." I thought to myself.
After giving up halfway through drying my hair, I went over to the fridge. It's been god knows how long since I last ate and I've puked my guts up since then.
However, fate was not on my side. As I opened the fridge all I saw was bags of blood. Closer inspection of the label revealed it was human blood, including what type it was.
Now I'm not great with blood at the best of times, but seeing it bagged in the fridge like it was someone's personal snack was enough to make me feel sick yet again.
I went over to the steel door and began banging on it, trying to get someone's attention. At this point I'm not even sure if anyone is on the other side. After all, no one came in when I woke up.
As I was banging on the door I noticed a faint smell coming from the other side of it. I could swear it was roast lamb and gravy. My stomach growled, demanding it be fed the lamb and gravy that I wasn't even sure existed.
After a few minutes, I gave up on getting anyone's attention. If they could hear me, then they were ignoring me.
Having nothing else to do, I went and sat on the bed and started to think. All the while my stomach was throwing a temper tantrum, demanding to be fed.
I had no idea where I was or what happened to Leah and Rhys. Don't even get me started on what I was planning to do with that snake Audrey if I ever see her again. Unless she has a REALLY good explanation I'm going to make sure she never wants to come near me or my loved ones again.
However, all this pondering on questions I don't have the answers to isn't going to help me. So I decided to get up and look at what was on the bookshelf. Flicking through the titles until one caught my interest. 'A History of Vampires.' By Charles Mayweather.
I took it off the shelf carefully as it looked extremely old. A quick look at the publication date of 1921 confirmed that it was in fact, really old.
I opened the cover and immediately the dedication caught my attention.
For my son, Reece Mayweather.
In my hopes that one day,
The monsters in the shadows bleeding us dry,
Can be found and purged from this world.
There was no table of contents. The next next page was simply titled 'Chapter 1 - Beginnings.' "Ok," I admitted to myself, "I'm curious to see what this story is about." As I started to read.
'Most people believe that Vampires emerged two hundred years ago, when the virus appeared. This simply isn't the truth.'
'The truth is far more frightening. The original vampires came to earth from somewhere else when we were still apes. It's not known where they came from or why they decided to settle on earth. All that's known for sure is that they were not of this world.'
'They then realized that apes were the best source of the blood they needed to consume. They proceeded to farm our very early ancestors much like we would farm cattle. Through selective breeding, they were able to make their food bigger and tastier. This is how the early cavemen came to be.'
'All had been going well for the vampires for 100,000's of years. They were well fed and breeding as freely as their genetics would allow them. However that all changed when some of them breed with humans.'
'There was no immediately noticeable change in the human species as only a small amount of vampire DNA slowly spread in the human genetic pool.'
'However, over time we got stronger thanks to that DNA and far more importantly, we got much smarter.'
'We humans kept evolving so that every person on earth now possessed and learnt skills on how to fight back.'
'Everything changed for our vampire overlords, however, when in 1475 Vladimir the Impaler, was successfully killed.'
'Even if it took hundreds of our lives to kill one of them, we fought. With the vampire population rapidly declining. This was majorly in part to the fact that vampires have very long live life spans and very low birth rates.'
'By the year 1700, the vampire numbers had reduced to such a level that they were in danger of becoming extinct. The remaining vampires hatched a brilliant plan.'
'Using the remaining technology from their previous world, the vampires engineered a virus that would affect unborn humans. Giving them certain, positive characteristics of vampires. Under this cover of "virus vampires", the originals vanished. Leaving only their drones to do their work for them. Not one has been seen since.'
I finished reading. "Ok, maybe this isn't meant to be a Sci-Fi story." I admitted, before my stomach interrupted me with it's biggest growl yet.
I was wondering how they couldn't hear the monster in my belly on the other side of the door when a little intercom light lit up near the door and a crackly female voice sounded over it.
"Can you please just eat and shut your stomach up." She said. "We can hear that damn thing two rooms away."
I got off the bed and stomped over to the intercom, instantly pissed off at the voice on the other side of the device.
"Well I would except there's no food in here." I snapped back at the unseen woman.
"What are you talking about?" She responded. "There's an entire fridge full of your... food." She paused before saying the word food and I imagined her making air quotes with her hands.
"How the actual fuck is human blood food?" I continued to snap, my temper rising. "I'm not a fucking vampire. Blood does not smell appetizing. It's sickening and I will definitely catch some sort of disease if I try and consume that. So why don't you give that disgusting stuff to an actual vampire and bring me some fucking food if you want my stomach to shut up!" I admit I was yelling into the intercom by the end of my rant.
"So you really don't want it?" The intercom asked, sounding confused.
"I'm not sure how many other way I can tell you that!" I continued to snap, still angry.
"Ok... give me a few minutes." The voice said before the intercom light went dead.
I went back to the tiny bed and continued to flick through the book I was reading before I was interrupted.
About five minutes later a small door opened in the bottom of the big steel door and a tray was slipped through. As the little door opened I realized that is was completely dark in this room because lots of light was shining through the small opening. So apparently my glowing eyes meant I could see in the dark. Another new thing I have to deal with. Go me.
On the tray was a generous helping of mouth watering roast lamb, as well as roast potatoes, carrots and pumpkin. There was also a small cup of mint sauce and gravy for dressings. Off to the side of the tray was a can of vanilla coke.
I resisted the urge to eat it right there while still squatting down. But being the civilized person I am, I grabbed the tray to bring it over to the bed.
Once I was seated comfortably, I got stuck into the food. I didn't know how long it's been since I last ate and this was delicious. I polished off the entire tray in what I think was under ten minutes. There were no clocks in here, but I'm sure I set a record.
I put the tray back by the little door and sat on the bed, my stomach finally feeling content and no longer throwing a tantrum.
I picked up 'A History of Vampires.' and started reading chapter two. A while later the big steel door to my cell opened with a bang. I'm not sure how long it's been since I'd eaten because I'm at chapter 14 now, so a while I guess.
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" A pissed off Audrey demanded of me as light strips in the roof started to glow, ringing illumination to the once dark room.
