Chapter 16
I woke up earlier than usual. My excitement pulling me out of sleep. I swear I heard it laugh at the thought.
Today was the first day of University for the four of us and I was looking forward to orientation. For one glorious day I get to immerse myself in school life without having any homework.
I rolled over in my ridiculously comfy bed and looked at the alarm clock on my bedside table which read 5 am. Some people choose to get up at this time. To exercise. Masochists.
Deciding that it really was too early to get up, I rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. I failed miserably, of course, and got up at an hour later feeling much worse for the extra attempted sleep.
A hot shower later and I got dressed in my pre organised outfit consisting of ripped skinny jeans, over one shoulder top with no sleeves and converse.
I ended up swearing as I tried to put the special contacts Jamie had acquired into my eyes. They matched my eye color perfectly and would hopefully stop the glow from my eyes in low light situations. I'd decided that all the Ethereals had to wear them when I'd learnt of their existence.
I came downstairs to the magical smell of bacon and eggs. Rose was busy in the middle of the kitchen creating mouth watering food.
Shortly after we arrived here Rose had taken over the duty of cooking for everyone in the house, even declining Jamie's offer of hiring a professional chef. Her love of cooking reminded me of all the time she spent in the kitchen growing up because she couldn't go outside.
I went into the kitchen and gave my big sister a hug from behind before she shooed me out and into the dining area.
She forced me to sit down and put a massive helping of bacon and eggs on toast in front of me. Sometimes I had to wonder if Rose had a feeder fetish.
Leah, Audrey and Mia soon descended the stairs looking like they were ready for their first day like I was. Except all three of them had a fine sheen of make up on, unlike me. I hated make up and only wore it occasionally or when I had to.
"Is everyone nervous?" I asked the group sitting around the table, more so to calm my own nerves than anything else. I mainly got grunts and nods in response. Everyone appeared to be too asleep still to function properly.
After a mostly silent breakfast Leah, Audrey, Mia and myself piled into Audrey's car for the short trip to our new university. It's well within walking distance, but we were feeling really lazy.
I stepped out of the car when we arrived and the first thing I noticed was the sheer number of people our age everywhere. Leah and I had gone to a small school so we weren't used to thousands of people on campus at once.
The second thing that caught my attention was the map of the uni that was on the signboard at the end of the car park. It seemingly informed me quite happily that there are three bars on campus. Great, lots of drunken young adults. I rolled my eyes as Mia pulled me along to chase after Leah and Audrey who had gone ahead to the auditorium where orientation was due to start.
The auditorium looked like a theater with the stage front and center and cushioned seats rising in rows behind it.
Most of the seats were already taken in the front and in the back so the four of us had to go and find four empty seats.
I could already feel the stares from the guys, that part of school still hasn't changed.
"You can sit here." A guy offered, waving to the three empty seats next to him before getting out of his and proceeding to sit in the isle next to his friends.
"Thank you, that's really sweet." I said to him as he proceeded to head towards the isle.
"No problem." Came his reply as he nodded in recognition of my comment.
We sat down just as an older man entered the stage. He had black and white peppered hair, a face that looked a little weather beaten and blue eyes that seemed to be incredibly intelligent.
"Welcome to Melbourne University." He greeted us once he'd got us to stop talking. "I'm Professor Richardson and I'm in charge of the first year program for this year. If you need anything please don't hesitate to come to me."
His voice was quite monotone and I quickly lost interest in anything he was saying, as did most of the students in the auditorium. A quick look around told me that a surprisingly large number of people already had their phones out.
After what seemed like an eternity of half listening to Professor Richardson's droning voice, we were separated into groups so the older students could give us a tour around campus.
The four of us managed to be part of the same group with Mr Nice Guy and three of his friends making up the other half.
I took a better look at Mr Nice Guy as we waited for our senior to arrive and take us around.
He had black hair which was shaved on both sides but cut in a way that the other hair covered it unless it was styled, kind of like a large undercut. He had brown eyes and thin lips. He was skinny, I mean proper skinny, I had a sudden urge to feed the guy.
His dress sense wasn't bad. He had black jeans, a button up casual shirt and a nice pair of army green converse on.
It became pretty obvious that one of the guys in his group was undressing us girls with his eyes, which is a fact that got me and Audrey mad. I was so sick of guys thinking with their tiny dicks.
However before a confrontation erupted, a sudden and abrupt sound made by a hand made contact with the back of Mr Perverts head. Instantly wiping the smile off his face.
"What the fuck Gabe?" He asked, looking at Mr Nice Guy who was apparently called Gabe.
"Get your head out of the gutter Dan." came the reply from Gabe. "You haven't even met these people yet for christ sake."
Dan glared at him before taking a few steps back to sulk in the corner.
"Sorry about that." Gabe said, addressing the four of us in a surprisingly soft voice for a guy. "He can just be a little hopeful at times and has a habit of jumping the gun. Please find it in yourselves to forgive him. I promise he's not actually a bad guy."
"I'll consider it." I said, flashing an evil green towards the sulking form of Dan before extending my hand towards Gabe for a handshake "I'm Violet by the way."
"Nice to meet you Violet." Came Gabe's reply as he took my hand in a firm grip. Seriously, for such a tiny hand he sure had a grip. "This is Vanessa, John and you already know Dan." He said, pointing to each member of his group, who responded with small hello's.
I introduced Leah, Audrey and Mia just before I heard a booming voice calling.
"Gabriel." Someone shouted over the mass of chatter created by all the people forming themselves into groups for orientation.
"Over here Alexander." Gabe replied. Wait, his full name is Gabriel?
I looked at Gabe, a question in my eyes that never got answered because a blond senior arrived at our group.
"There you are Gabriel." He said, "Introduce me."
That instantly put me on edge. Who in this day and age can command their peers to do something like introduce them, like they're his boss or something? I'd tell them to grow some balls and do it himself.
A quick look at Alexander revealed natural blond hair, an almost angelically proportioned face and what could only be light violet eyes. He also held an air of arrogance that surrounded him, making him much uglier than his pretty face would suggest.
"First off, it's Gabe, not Gabriel." Gabe said to Alexander, obviously quite annoyed. Although I wasn't sure if Alexander even bothered to listen to that.
"Second, this is Alexander." He said to everyone else. "His parents own several television channels here in Australia and he hates to be called Alex."
"Rich kid huh." I thought to myself. "No wonder he seems so pompous. I wonder if he knows that being a pompous, jerky rich kid makes him far less attractive? Even with a perfect face."
"Hi Alex." I greeted him, once again holding out my hand to shake his. "I'm Violet, this is Audrey, Leah and Mia."
"It's Alexander," He corrected me, taking my hand to shake it. "What brings an angel such as yourself to Melbourne Uni?"
Did he seriously just try and use some cheesy pick up line. What the fuck man.
"Yea, I'm going to call you Alex, Alexander is too much of a handful. I'd say mouthful but honestly, I'm not a fan of putting dirty things in my mouth." I felt him flinch as my refusal to use his full name. Oh god this was going to be an even longer year with this joker around.
Luckily, or unluckily depending on how you saw it, Gabe stepped between us, before the argument turned either nasty or fun. Well fun for me, idiots like this were easy targets.
After glaring at Gabe for a couple of seconds, Alex reigned his temper in and address me. "You're lucky you have Gabe here to help, she seems to have taken a liking to you for some reason. Now I believe I'm here to give you the tour." He started walking out to show us around as he was still talking.
Thankfully Alex became so engrossed in imparting his knowledge of the campus to us that he didn't start any more trouble.
I can say that I'm honestly looking forward to the next four years here.
Wait a second did Alex just call Gabe a she?
