Chapter 3
****Flashback****
It was a normal day in the Umbrella Academy, a record started to play and the bell rang. All the children came down the stairs and into the dining hall where mom waited for them. They were all thirteen at the time, Sabrina stood at the end, across from Vanya and next to Five. Moments later their father, Sir Reginald Hargeeves finally walked in and went to the head of the table. He pulled out his chair and stared at Vanya, who stared back from under her bangs.
"Sit," dad ordered. They took their seats while listening to the recording. Everyone began to dig in. Diego was carving at the table; Klaus was unrolling drugs underneath the table. Luther and Allison smiled at each other. Ben was reading a book as Sabrina did a crossword puzzle and Vanya simply ate. There was a clang across the table, they all looked up to see Five had stabbed the table.
" Number Five?" Dad called.
" I have a question," Five brought.
"Five," Sabrina whispered as she tugged on his sleeve, Five looked at her.
" I have it handled," Five smiled cockily before looking back at Reginald.
" Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules," dad said. " No talking during mealtimes. You are interrupting Herr Carlson." Five then placed his silverware on the plate.
"I want to time travel," Five insisted. Sabrina and Ben glanced at each other before looking back at Five. He has always wanted to time travel. The three of them would stay up predicting what the future would look like.
"No," Dad denied.
" But I'm ready," Five insisted.
"You are?" Sabrina asked Ben kicked her under the table.
" I've been practicing my spatial jumps, just like dad said," Five answered as he looked at Sabrina and then back at Reginald. He then stood up, pushing his chair back. He warped himself next to the man. " See?"
" A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel," Sir Reginald explained as he picked up his glass of wine. " One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn."
" Well, I don't get it," Five admitted.
" Hence the reason you're not ready," Reginald declared. Vanya then shook her head at Five, they all glanced at him.
" I'm not afraid," Five confirmed.
" Fear isn't the issue," Reginald declined. " The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable." He then threw down his fork and knife, turning to Five. " Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore." Number Five turned and quickened his pace. " Number Five!" He rounded the corner.
" Five?" Sabrina called.
" I'll be back, just you see!" Five laughed, the door opened, and he was gone.
" Come back here!" Dad ordered, but Five kept running. Five got out of the gates and looked around at the people on the street. He then time traveled himself into a warmer future.
" Not ready, my ass," Five scoffed. He then traveled himself into a snowy future, and then finally into a destroyed future. Everything was on fire, Five became lost, scared, and confused. He ran all the way back to the Umbrella Academy, to find it in the same state as everything around it.
"Sabrina!" Five called out. No reply, his heart raced, he told her that he would be back. " Vanya! Ben! Dad! " He turned around. " Anyone!" He tried to time travel back, but nothing worked, it looked like he almost hadhandcuffss around his wrists. " Come on! Shit." Tears formed in his eyes, he turned back towards his destroyed home, and he fell to his knees crying. "I'm sorry."
****Flashback over****
Fast forward Sabrina was still in Vanya's apartment as Five told them his story. They had a cup of coffee and some food.
"Food-wise?" Sabrina asked.
" I survived on scraps," Five answered. " Canned good, cockroaches, anything I could find. " He then chuckled. " I guess our bug-eating competition really paid off." He looked at Sabrina.
" You two had a bug-eating competition?" Vanya asked in disgust.
"Ben was in on it too," Sabrina informed. "Pretty sure The Horror cheated." She laughed lightly.
"You know the rumor that Twinkies have an endless shelf life?" Five asked. The two girls nodded as Five brought the coffee to his mouth. " Well, it's total bullshit.
" I can't even imagine," Vanya said.
"You do whatever it takes to survive, or you die," Five concluded. " So we adapted. Whatever the world threw at us, we found a way to overcome it."
"We?" Vanya asked.
" You got anything stronger?" Five asked.
"Alcohol stronger?" Sabrina asked.
" He's thirteen," Vanya reminded her.
" He used to be 58," Sabrina corrected as Vanya got up. " He's a growing boy." Vanya shook her head, found alcohol, poured some for Five, and handed it to him.
" You both think I'm crazy," Five said after taking a drink.
" No," Vanya stammered. " It's just...it's a lot to take in."
" Exactly what don't you understand?" Five demanded.
" Why didn't you just time travel back?" Sabrina demanded. Five scoffed at her.
" Gee, wish I'd thought of that," Five sassed.
"Why couldn't you time travel back?" Sabrina asked as she rolled her eyes, folding her arms.
" Time travel is a crapshoot," Five answered. " I went into the ice and never acorn-ed." He then looked at both girls. " You think I didn't try everything to get back to my family?"
" I didn't think you cared to come back," Sabrina admitted. " Maybe Klaus was right about you going to the future, and probably also right about you just didn't want to return." Five looked at her, his face fell a little.
" S-" Five began.
"If you grew old there," Vanya began, cutting Five off. " You know, in the apocalypse, how come you still look like a kid?"
" I told you already," Five scoffed as he walked to the bottle. " I must have got the equations wrong."
" I mean, Dad used to say that.." Vanya said as Five poured the drink. " Time travel could mess up your mind. Well, maybe that's what's happening?"
" This was a mistake," Five said as he put down the drink. " You two are too young..." He grabbed an item belonging to him. " Too naive to understand." He headed towards the door.
" No, Five...Five, wait," Vanya protested. He stopped and turned towards the two.
" We haven't seen you in a long time," Sabrina informed. " And we don't want to lose you again."
" That's all," Vanya agreed. " And you know what. it's getting late, and...I have lessons early, and I need to sleep, and I'm sure you both do, too." She walked out to the couch and grabbed blankets. "Here." Five looked at her and walked back into the room more. " We'll talk in the morning again. Okay? I promise." She then started to head to the bedroom. " Night," She told the two.
" Night," Five said to her, they watched her open her bedroom door, slip in and close it. He sat on the couch as Sabrina sat on the chair. She looked out the window, and back Five who had an object in his hand.
"What do you have there?" Sabrina asked.
"The person who is responsible for the apocalypse," Five answered. "An eyeball."
"From where?" Sabrina asked.
" The place I asked for directions for," Five answered. " MeriTech." He then stood up. " Let's go."
"Shouldn't we rest?" Sabrina asked.
"Not while we can stop the end of the world," Five said as he opened the door, he stepped back and looked at her. " Are we teaming up like we used to or not?" Sabrina closed her eyes, they always teamed up.
"Sure," Sabrina sighed as she stood up. " Let's get a move on."
"Now that's what I like to hear," Five smiled. Sabrina shook her head and walked passed him.
"I thought I was too young, too naive," Sabrina recalled as they headed down the steps.
" You are," Five confirmed.
"Sorry to be dismissive, but I get a lot of customers claiming they've been to the future as well," Sabrina scoffed. " Your future is sounded as chaotic and similar to their versions."
"And what is their version?" Five asked.
"Aliens, asteroids, zombies, " Sabrina listed. " All ending up in flames, just like the one you described."
"Mine is real," Five insisted.
"So MeriTech is where you got the eyeball?" Sabrina asked as they got in the car and started to drive off.
"No," Five denied. " I got it out of Luther's dead hand."
" Luther? Dead?" Sabrina questioned as she started to drive off.
"All of us?" Sabrina asked. " You saw all our bodies? "
" I couldn't find Vanya's body," Five admitted. " I looked as long as I could, it probably got burned up."
"Ok," Sabrina breathed as she followed his directions.
"For the record," Five began as he glanced at her. " I do care."
Soon they reached MeriTech and they went up to a specific floor. They looked around the place, till a guy noticed them.
" Uh, can I help you?" the technician asked the two.
"I need to know who this belongs to," Five requested as he walked forward with the eyeball.
" Where did you get that?" the technician asked.
"What do you care?" Five asked, Sabrina, shook her head and walked over.
" He found it," Sabrina answered. " At a playground."
" Must of just," Five began as he clicked his tongue. " Popped out."
" He wants to be a good boy and return it to its rightful owner," Sabrina added as Five looked at the eyeball.
" Oh," the secretary breathed. " What a thoughtful young man."
" Yeah. Look up the name for me, will ya?" Five requested.
" Uh, I'm sorry, but patient records are strictly confidential," the technician apologized. " That means I can't tell you--"
" Yeah, I know what it means," Five interrupted.
" What can you do?" Sabrina asked.
" I will take the eye off of your son's hands and return it to the owner," The technician told her. " I'm sure he or she will be very grateful, so if I can just--" He reached for the eye, but Five denied it.
" Yeah, you're not touching this eye," Five insisted, he sounded irritated.
" Now, you listen here, young man," the doctor began, Five grabbed him by the collar and pulled him close.
" No! You listen to me, asshole," Five threatened. " I've come a long way for this, through some shit your pea brain couldn't even comprehend, so just give me the information I need, and I'll be on my merry way. And if you call me young man one more time, I'm gonna put your head through that damn wall."
" Oh dear," the secretary breathed.
" Call security," the technician ordered softly.
" Yeah," she agreed as she picked up the phone.
"Let's go, son," Sabrina ordered. Five let go of the man angrily, he then walked away, and the two Hargeeves made their way out of the building.
"Idiots," Five growled as they left the building. " Come on, we need Klaus."
" Klaus?" Sabrina asked.
"Probably at home," Five theorized. " Get a move on, we him."
" Ok," Sabrina breathed. " Why?"
"You'll see," Five said, Sabrina, shook her head. " What?"
" Something insane going to happen I'm guessing," Sabrina theorized.
"The World ending is insane," Five informed.
" I hear ya," Sabrina said. Once they reached home, they talked to Klaus, he told them his master plan. At the current moment, Sabrina was in Five's room, both staring out the window as Klaus hid the wardrobe.
"Dad never allowed anyone in here after you left," Sabrina informed. " Wanted it to remain untouched."
"Did it?" Five asked.
" Nope," Sabrina answered as she removed a ceiling tile. " Me and Ben and sometimes Klaus left a couple of things in here, some grand master plans for college, my duplicates distracted father and we could sneak in." She then pulled down a coney island mug with a Sullivan stuffed animal from monsters' ink stuffed inside. "Any sign of fun." Five couldn't help but smile as he took the mug.
" Oh, thank God," a voice breathed, they looked back and saw Vanya walking into the room. " I was worried sick about you." She was looking at Five.
" Sorry, we left without saying goodbye," Five apologized as he put the mug down.
"Wouldn't be the first time," Sabrina breathed.
" Again," Five breathed.
" No, look, I'm the one that should be sorry," Vanya stated. " Yeah, I was dismissive, and...I-I guess I didn't know how to process what you were saying. And I still can't; to be honest."
" Maybe you were right to be dismissive," Five acknowledged, he scoffed and turned to a corner. " Maybe it wasn't real after all. " He touched one of his old toys. " It felt real like you said, the old man did say time travel could contaminate the mind."
" Then maybe I'm not the right person for you to talk to," Vanya concluded,
"Who should he talk to?" Sabrina asked.
" I used to see someone," Vanya informed. A therapist. I could give Five, her information. "
" Thanks," Five breathed. " But...I think I'm just gonna get some rest. It's been a long time since I've had a good sleep."
" Okay," Vanya sighed, she looked down, turned, and walked out. Five walked to the doorway to make sure she was gone when the wardrobe doors opened, things clattered, and Klaus became visible.
" That's so....touching," Klaus gushed as he stumbled a bit, stepping on a couple of things. " All that stuff about family and Dad and time. Wow!"
" Would you shut up?" Sabrina requested as she rubbed the sides of her temple.
"She'll hear you," Five hissed.
" I'm moist," Klaus said.
" I thought I told you to put on something professional," Five reminded him.
" What?" Klaus asked in surprise. " This is my nicest outfit."
" We'll raid the old man's closet," Sabrina told Five, before looking at Klaus. " That is Klaus's nicest outfit though, gets a lot of compliments at the bar," Klaus smirked as Five rolled his eyes.
" As long as I get paid," Klaus said as they left the room.
"When the job is done," Five said.
" Okay, but just so we're clear on the finer details," Klaus began, they stopped closer to Sabrina's room. " I just gotta go into this place and pretend to be your dear old uncle, as Sabrina pretends to be your dear old mom, correct?"
" Yeah," Five breathed. " Something like that."
"What's our cover story?" Klaus asked.
" What?" Sabrina asked. " What are you talking about?"
" I mean was Sabrina really young when she had you? Like 16 and she found a home in her dear old brother's home, both terribly misguided?"
"Sure," Five agreed.
"Your father is a slut," Klaus theorized. " I as your 'uncle' like to go out all the time. And the sex between me and my lover, and Sabrina and your 'father' was amazing." He felt his chest.
" What a disturbing glimpse into that thing you call a brain," Five commented before walking away.
" Don't make me put you in time-out," Klaus threatened. " Let's go double-double," She then followed them out.
" Me and you having sex next to each other?" Sabrina asked raising an eyebrow.
" Don't act like it hasn't happened," Klaus giggled. " Remember a month ago?"
" You had sex?" Five asked, looking back at them. " What about safety?"
" I know all about safety," Sabrina told him. " I'm almost 30 years old, I own a bar. And if I had sex or not, is not really any of your business Back from the future man."
" Nice one," Klaus laughed as held up a hand, and they high-fived each other.
