Chapter 18

The next morning, I woke up feeling wonderful. It was nice to know that no one came to try and kill me in my sleep.

After freshening up and changing out of my pajamas, I walked down the staircase and saw Serena standing at the door. "It's the human." She said, not so happily.

I smiled, ignoring her rudeness. "Good morning."

She nodded her head.

I sighed and walked towards her. "Where's Kero?" I asked.

She pointed to her right. "You probably don't want to go close to him though... he's not in a good mood."

After staring at her for a second, I turned around and walked towards the large living room. When I saw Chirpy, I smiled at him. "Good morning!"

He smiled hesitantly. "Hey."

It was then that I realized that everyone was standing against a wall. Everyone meaning Chirpy, Savannah, Aryan, Amber, and Katelyn. "What's going on?" I asked.

"Something weird." Katelyn said.

I then noticed she was looking past me. I turned around and saw Kero, who was looking out a window. "What's wrong?" I asked, walking towards him.

"No, no, no, no!" Chirpy exclaimed as he rushed towards me. He then grabbed my hand pulled me away.

"Can you stop mumbling? I can't fucking hear any of you!" Kero yelled as he flung himself around.

I gasped. Oh god.

Kero glared at every single person in the room. His eyes were red and so was his nose. His skin looked paler than normal and his lips were white. Even his hair was a mess. He looked terrible.

"He's sick." Chirpy said.

"And he gets terribly mean when he's sick." Savannah added.

"But this is so weird! Kero gets sick like, once every blue moon!" Katelyn said.

"What the hell do you not understand about the fact that I can't hear you?" Kero asked.

I bit my lip.

"Sorry pal!" Chirpy yelled. "We were trying to figure out where we can get medications!"

"You don't need to yell, damn it!" Kero yelled back.

Chirpy rolled his eyes. "Kero, calm down." He said.

"How can I calm down?" He asked. "How the hell do I calm down? I'm fucking sick! I never get sick! I'm weak! I can barely see properly because my eyes are fucking watery and itch like crazy." He sneezed. "I can barely breathe because my fucking nose is stuffed! I can't move because my fucking chest hurts and I can barely speak because my fucking throat is burning!"

I stared. I have never heard Kero swear like that before.

"Keroshan!" Aryan yelled. "Shut up!"

Kero growled. "Say that again!" He challenged.

"Shut up! For your own sake!"

Kero charged at Aryan.

Katelyn, Amber and Savannah screamed. "Stop bro!" Katelyn yelled.

Chirpy ran for Kero but was knocked back. "Keroshan!" He yelled.

Aryan started to run away. "I don't want to fight you!" He yelled.

Kero growled. "Maybe you should have thought of that before you pissed me off!" He then cornered Aryan.

I ran after him and hugged him from the back. "Stop! Stop! Stop!" I said, over and over again. "This is stupid! Stop this Kero!" When I realized that he wasn't going to stop, I rushed in front of Aryan. "Keroshan! If you want to hit anyone you can hit me!" I yelled. "It's my fault you're sick! So if you're pissed and you want to take it out on someone than hit me!"

Kero stared at me for a second and then stepped back with a sigh. He then sneezed.

"Wait... you made him sick?" Savannah asked.

Serena laughed. "Impossible." She said as she walked into the room. "Human diseases cannot pass onto Raakshyans.

I sighed and explained what happened to them and when I was done, everyone was too afraid to go into the kitchen. "If that thing made Keroshan this sick, then it might kill us." Aryan said.

Savannah nodded.

Kero groaned as he fell back onto the sofa. "When is this shit going to end?"

I sat down next to him. "First off, stop swearing! It's not like you."

Kero rolled his eyes. "I'm sick. Deal with it." He said, rudely.

I frowned at him.

Chirpy sat next to me. "Kero turns into the opposite of Kero when he's sick." He then bent close to me. "I think he does it because he's weaker when he's sick and if he scares everyone, they won't mess with him." He whispered.

"So... everything's affected? His hearing, his smelling..."

"Everything." Chirpy said. "When we're talking in this tone, it probably sounds like whispering to him."

"Shut up, Chirpy." Kero said, glaring at him.

Serena walked up to Kero. "People told me you were looking for me." She said. "You want to tell me why so that I can leave? I have work to do."

Kero glared at her. There was something about his glare that reminded me of Serpethion. I then realized that he was acting a lot like Serpethion right now. "Serpethion came to the human world and..." He sneezed. "... and I know that you know why he came."

Serena stared at him. "What?"

"Why was he there?"

Serena frowned. "Keroshan, for all you know he could have came to talk to you and be nice! Why can't you be a little nice to him?"

Kero surprised me by laughing. "I highly doubt that." He said.

"Why? Why else would he come to the human world if it wasn't to talk to you?"

"If he wanted to talk to me, then why would he sneak into Aathy's friends' room and steal pictures of her?" He sneezed again.

"Okay. He's obviously planning something." Aryan said.

"I knew he didn't like Aathy... but I don't get why he would take pictures of her." Chirpy said.

"He's a dunce. Doesn't know what to do with himself so he's probably just going around pissing people off." Aryan said.

"Huh, that makes sense." Katelyn said.

Amber shrugged. "Well, he's a jerk. He probably needs the picture so that he can throw darts at it."

Aryan laughed. "That sounds totally unlike him. If he wanted to throw darts at something, he would throw them at the actual person."

I watched Serena's expressions as everyone dissed Serpethion.

"Shut up! Why are you guys always hating on him?" She asked.

"Why are you always sticking up for him?" Kero asked.

Savannah gritted her teeth. "Maybe it's because I understand him! You know what he's going through Keroshan! Why don't you give him a break?"

Kero got up, angrily. "He's one of my best friends! Of course I understand him! I understand him more than anyone in this room and I understand that something is wrong with him and I also understand that he's making big mistakes right now!"

Everyone seemed surprised by his words.

Serena didn't bother arguing.

"You know what else I understand?" Kero asked. "I also understand that you are, as always, forgetting that sometimes friends make mistakes. And when they make mistakes, we have to be there to make sure they don't make the same mistakes again. You are not doing that, you are letting him make more and more mistakes because you are being too nice to him."

Serena turned around and walked away.

Everyone watched her go, but I surprised them and myself by following after her. "Hey, Serena!" I called as I followed her out of the house.

"What do you want human?" She asked in a hostile voice.

"I have a name..." I frowned.

She glared. "Does it matter? Human?"

I sighed, I was sick and tired of this 'humans are so bad' thing that most Raakshyans seemed to think. "Look, just cause I'm a human, doesn't mean I'm not a girl." I said.

She looked at me with disgust. "What? What difference does that make? You are still a human."

"Ok fine."

"Leave. Now." She said.

"I want to get to know you." I said.

She grimaced. "Well, I don't want to get to know you!"

I pouted. "Well, how about you think of getting to know me as a good thing. After all, I am human, so you can learn a thing or two about us. You can get certain things you want to know about us out of me, so you can kill us later." Great. I was turning my back on the human race. Sorry people.

But it worked. She tried, unsuccessfully, to hide her smile and from that I knew that Kero wasn't lying when he said that she was actually a nice person.

"Alright, fine. What do you want?" She asked. She tried to hide the kindness, but I could still see it on her face.

"What was that whole act all about?" I asked.

"What act?"

"The 'I'm so tough' act."

She hesitated.

"Don't worry, you can trust me, if it's a secret... I mean, Kero told me about the human. I promise you that not all human guys are like that!"

She snorted. "I know."

"Then why do you hate me so much?" I asked.

"I don't hate you." She defended.

"Well, why do you dislike me?"

She pressed her lips into a straight line.

"Is it because Serpethion doesn't like me? Does it have anything to do with Serpethion?"

She shot a look at me. Not of anger, but of shock.

"What?"

"Why would you say that?" She asked.

I shrugged and looked down, making sure that I didn't trip over something. "I just saw the way that you wanted to defend him... it just seemed that you have a connection with him."

She started to laugh. "A connection, huh?" She looked at me. "What an interesting term you use."

I decided to get straight to the point. "You like him, don't you? I mean... like, love."

She stopped walking. "What makes you think that?"

"It's pretty obvious." I said bluntly as I crossed my arms.

She looked started walking again. "You want to know what's funny?" She asked.

I nodded.

"My best friends couldn't even figure it out, but you..."

"Well, other than Savannah, Amber and Katelyn, they're all boys." I said. "From my experience with boys, they're really bad at figuring out things like this."

"Are you experienced with boys?"

"Well... I have a lot of male friends, I have an older brother and one of my best friends is a guy, oh, and Kero."

She nodded.

"Can you tell me why you like him?" I asked.

"Why?"

"To be honest with you, I'm having difficulty trying to figure out why you would like him. I mean, from what I know, he's a total jerk."

She sighed. "He is a jerk... at least now he is. He always had a mean side but he never used it around his friends. Keroshan knows that... and I don't understand why he's not-"

"I think he really does understand." I said, interrupting her.

She looked at me.

"Whenever Kero tells me about Serpethion, he always says that Serpethion is a good guy." I said.

"Really?"

"Yup, and can you tell me another thing?"

She nodded.

I was glad that we were becoming friends. "Is Serpethion jealous of Kero?" I asked.

She hesitated, but then sighed. "I think he is. And..." She looked at me. "Promise me you won't tell anyone. Not even Keroshan."

I smiled, happy that she was now willing to trust me. "You can tell me anything, I'm not someone who would use your secrets against you. I love making friends and I'm really glad that you're talking to me... without glaring at me."

She smiled, which made her look very pretty.

I smiled back. "Friends?" I asked, holding my hand out.

She looked at it and took it. "Friends."

I grinned. "Okay, go ahead, tell me what you wanted to say."

She nodded and sat down in the grass. "I think he's jealous of Keroshan but there's more than one reason towards why he is."

I sat down next to her. "Well, one reason is because Kero's powerful and he's... not as powerful."

She nodded. "Another reason is that Keroshan is much respected."

"Okay..." I tried to think of other reasons.

"Keroshan is also the next King of Warriors." She said. "And Keroshan is, in a way, the leader of our group." She looked like she was going to add something, but hesitated.

"What? Why else would he be jealous?" I asked.

She took a deep breath and looked at me. "Keroshan loves you... yes?"

I felt my cheeks heat up. "Well, yeah... I guess." What did that have to do with any of this?

"And Queen Jasmine loves Keroshan, yes?"

I nodded.

"Well... Serpethion loves the Queen." She said, looking away.

My mouth fell open. "No wonder he's so loyal!" I said, finally realizing it. "Wait... did he tell you?" I asked.

"I figured it out, confronted him and he admitted it." She said.

"But... hasn't the queen liked Kero for a long time? Since they were kids, right?" I asked. Why would Serpethion like her if he knew she liked him?

"They aren't in love anymore. At least, Keroshan doesn't love her." She said.

"So... Serpethion's mad that she still loves Kero?"

"I guess." She looked down at her fingers.

I hesitated. "Does Serpethion know that you like him?" I asked.

She shook her head.

"Why haven't you told him?" I asked. "I think you're much better for him than she is."

She looked at me. "Really?"

I nodded. "I mean, if he found out you loved him, I'm sure he would consider it. It's not like the queen is holding him back 'cause she doesn't like him."

She smiled. "It's hard to express feelings to Serpethion." She said.

"Well, you should try."

She hesitated.

"Can you tell me about him?" I asked.

"What do you want to know?"

"About the side of Serpethion that I don't know."

She chuckled. "Oh... well." She thought for a second.

"Why don't you tell me how he was like from the day you met him?"

She nodded.
