Chapter 17

When we got home, I took a bath, ate and then Kero took me to his room, which is where I would sleep. After a short while, Kero left to look for Serena and I fell asleep.

When I woke up, I was startled by the darkness. When my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I started to cough. My throat was so dry that I couldn't even swallow. 'Water...' I sighed.

I lifted myself up and picked up the candle and lighter which Kero left for me on his side table. After lighting the candle, I stared at the door. I had no idea where the kitchen was, and in this huge house, it was going to take me forever to find it. I sighed again as I got up and walked out the door, candle in one hand, my teddy in another. I walked down the stairs and looked around, trying to ignore the creepiness of walking around in the middle of the night in a giant house.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps. I flung myself around, trying to figure out what it was, but saw nothing. I stood there for a second and stared into the darkness. What was I so worried about? How could there be anything creepy in the house without Kero knowing about it? I sighed. Everything's going to be okay. I turned around and started walking again.

I opened one of the doors and sighed when I saw a staircase. I knew for a fact that the kitchen was on this floor.

"Aathiray?"

I turned around, startled by the unfamiliar voice. There was no one there. "Who is it?" I asked.

No response.

My breathing started to speed up as my eyes widened to try and adjust more to the darkness. "Hello..."

"What are you doing here?" The voice asked.

"Who is this?" I asked, biting my lip. And then, as I turned around, my eye caught something.

Two, golden, glowing eyes looked at me, eyes which were attached to the silhouette of a man's' body.

I stepped back. "Who is this?" I repeated.

"It's good to know that you want to make my mission easier to complete, which I am assuming because you came to me rather than me having to come to you."

"What?" I stared at the golden eyes as they started to smile.

"How about you make it even easier and stand still so I can kill you."

Something inside me was telling me to run, so I decided to listen to that something inside me. I turned around and started to sprint out of the room, ignoring the fact that the fire on my candle went out and I could barely see anything.

I had no clue where I was running, but I eventually realized that I wasn't being followed. I turned into a room and sighed in relief when I realized it was the kitchen. I went against the wall next to the entrance and sat down, dropping my head onto my knees and listening. I tried my hardest to hear footsteps... but there was nothing.

I looked up and sighed. Maybe I was just imagining things. I shook my head and got ready to get up, but felt a hand on my shoulder. I opened my mouth to scream, but a hand covered it. I started to fight, throwing my arms and legs around.

"Aathy! What the hell? Calm down!" I heard Kero's voice say.

I stopped right away and then started coughing. My throat was so dry.

"What are you doing here in the middle of the night?" He asked, bending down in front of me.

"I need water!" I coughed. I rubbed my dry throat, I was parched.

Kero got up right away and walked to the counter, he poured me a glass of water and walked back to me. He sat in front of me as he handed me the glass.

I gulped it down right away. When I was done, I put the glass down beside me and looked at Kero. His hair wasn't tied back and he wasn't wearing a shirt. He looked tired too. "There's someone here!" I said.

Kero raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"Someone... he said that I made his... mission easier and he's going to kill me!"

Kero shook his head. "Aathy... I think you were dreaming."

I shook my head. "I saw him! I know I did!"

"Aathy... there is no way someone is going to get into this house without me knowing. Especially someone who wants to hurt you." He said.

But I barely heard him. I was looking past him, at the golden eyes which were staring at me. "Kero... turn around!"

He turned around right away but the golden eyes disappeared. "What?" He asked.

"He was right there! The man..."

Kero rolled his eyes. "Aathy..."

"Maybe you'll be able to smell his scent." I said. "Then you'll know I saw someone."

Kero sighed, but got up. He walked towards the spot in front of the counter with the fruit basket on it. "Here?" Kero asked.

"Move a bit to the left."

He did, and then he stepped back, startled. He coughed as he looked at me.

My eyes widened when I saw the tears in his eyes. I have never seen tears in his eyes.

He coughed again. "Damn..." He scrunched his nose. "Whatever that smell is, it burnt my nose." He said. He put his finger under his nose and then after a few seconds, he sneezed.

I couldn't help but laugh. It was such a cute sneeze.

He frowned at me and sneezed again. He then rubbed his eyes with the back of his hands.

"Was there someone..."

Kero sneezed again. "Yes... but... whoever it was knows that I can track him with his scent..." He sneezed.

"Bless you. Bless you. Bless you. Bless you." I said, trying to remember how many times he sneezed.

He sniffled. "Damn it... my nose is burning! And so are my eyes! And my throat! And my chest!" He took a deep breath.

"Who do you think it was?" I asked. I got up, walked towards him and rubbed his chest, trying to ignore the fact that he looked so hot. "Does that help your chest?" I didn't know what to do for the rest of the burning and I was starting to get worried.

Kero nodded, but he stepped away, turned his head to a side and sneezed again.

"Bless you!"

Kero sighed. "And I have no idea who it was..." He rubbed his eyes again.

"Don't do that." I said. "Rubbing your eyes makes it worse."

Kero bit his lip and I could tell he was trying to hold back another sneeze.

"Try washing your face." I said.

Kero nodded as he started to walk out of the kitchen.

I picked up Wonderland and followed him out. We walked up the staircase and into the washroom. He turned on the tap and started to wash his face. "Well," I said, "I guess that the person who came was someone who knew you."

Kero sneezed again. "A lot of people know me." Kero said.

"But, shouldn't it be someone who knows you and knows me? Cause they want to kill me, right?"

Kero turned off the tap and nodded. He looked at himself in the mirror, and then sneezed again. "It's not working." He said.

I frowned. "I'm sorry!" I said.

"Why?"

"It's my fault... maybe I should have stayed in bed."

Kero smiled and sniffled again. "Why were you up anyway?"

"I was thirsty." I sighed.

Kero chucked. "Oh yes. I forgot about your habits of having midnight snacks and drinks... you always have a snack and water on your side table, right?"

I nodded.

"That's my fault, I'm sorry I forgot to leave you something."

I shook my head. "That's not your fault!"

He smiled.

Even though he was smiling, I could see the stress on his face. Obviously he was stressed. He just found out that there is probably someone in his house and he has not clue who it is. I sighed. I always mess things up.

"Come, why don't you go back to sleep. You know where your room is, right?" He asked.

I nodded.

"Okay, I'll go get you a snack and a glass of water, you get to your room. Okay?"

I nodded again.

Kero smiled and walked out of the bathroom, he then sneezed again.

The second I sat in the bed, Kero was already back. I started grinning when I saw the piece of cake.

He smiled and put it on the side table, along with the water. He then turned around and sneezed again.

"How long do you think you're going to be sneezing?" I asked.

Kero shrugged. "I think it'll stop as soon as I get that smell out of my nose."

I nodded. "Maybe you should try the thing my mom makes me do when I can't stop sneezing."

"What is that?" Kero asked.

"You know, she takes a pot, puts it on the stove and then fills it with water. She then puts a bunch of tea bags in and ginger too. And then she makes me put my head over the steaming pot and makes me breath in the smell. Oh, and she puts a towel over my head so the steam and stuff doesn't escape. It really works. And it's good for your pores too."

Kero smiled. "If it doesn't go away by morning then I'll do that."

I nodded. "Goodnight." I said.

"Goodnight, and... if anything or anyone comes into the room and you feel threatened, just scream. Understood?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

He smiled as he closed the door and then I heard him sneeze again.
