Chapter Five

Anike’s POV

“Good morning Lord. Thank you for waking me up today. Please Lord let today be filled with your grace and happiness. Lead me to joy and let your favour be upon me. forgive me all my sins and thank you lord for your answered prayers. Amen.”
I stood up from my bed joining the other two girls in preparing for today.

School is officially starting today and let’s just say the weekend has been eventful. We just got more closer and petty fights between Mariam and Mercy made my day.

“Good morning.”
I muttered with a yawn. I rubbed my eyes and stretched.

“Good morning.”

The others replied and walked out of the room with their wrapped towel and little bag.

I looked up and found Mariam still sleeping heavily. She was almost snoring. So much for the sensitive person.

I chuckled as I climbed the little ladder and tapped her back,

“Mariam get up. you will be late.”
She shifted and even snuggled her pillow the more.

“Mariam!”
I called tinkling her this time.

She should even thank her God that I am trying to wake her up. The others were not even bothered. 

I can’t believe they just left her there like that but I understand. Mariam was the one making mouth the most. Saying she does not want noise and whatnot and after all the noise that has been made here this morning by Jada she is still sleeping.

She chuckled and held my hand.

“Stop it Anike. I am up.”

“better, because we will be late.”
She sat straight and looked round the room,

“Where are those two?”

“bathing.”

“what?”

I laughed out,

“better buy something for me during break.”
She jumped down from her bed after muttering a quick prayer. We picked up our towels together and walked out of the room.

She linked her hands with mine,
“I can see you are the only one that truly loves me in that room. thanks.”

I grinned,

“I thought you said you were sensitive.”
I teased.

I think because they are already rubbing on me, I find it easy to talk to them now. And now, I can even tease Mariam. That is something!

“Forget it. It was because I slept late. I was reading that novel I showed you.”

“oh.”

I nodded, remembering how grandma woke me up that morning too. Talking about grandma, I hope she is doing well.

“Please lend me when you are done.”

“Sure, but handle it with care.”

“thanks.”

“anything for my roomie.”

Eyy, why do I feel like I have suddenly become the best to her. 

I grinned as we stepped into the bathroom, we separated and tried to get any empty stall we could find.

“We have to rush!”
Mariam said.
Surprisingly, Mariam and I finished dressing up before Mercy and Jada even though they left us earlier.

This school has once again blown me with their uniform.

I wonder if they got my measurements from grandma because the uniform just fit me so well. I think mum must have sent it to her.

I was told this morning that each day had its own uniform and Monday’s uniform is a plain white short hand shirt with a simple badge on the little pocket at the top left, and a red chequered skirt. 
The skirt reached just a little above my knee. 

Even though it is cute, I still feel a little insecure about it because it made my broad hips and big butt more obvious.

Every other person in this room has a great shape, thin legs, and everything. The skirt stayed right in place and they just looked so nice. There was nothing to be insecure about unlike me.

I stared longer at my long thick legs and my white sneakers. 

“Come on Anike! Be positive! Love your body!”
I said inwardly to myself but another voice just lowered that one.

I glanced at Mercy who was still dressing up, her hourglass shape looked so good and she was even taking the effort to style her hair. Even though we made the same hairstyles, hers looked better.

Thankfully she was done seconds later because Mariam was getting ready to pounce on her.

Mariam was wearing a red chequered trouser instead of the skirt and even added a pink Nike Jordan and damn! She looked nice!

Jada picked her bag from her bed, linked her hands with me and we stepped out of the room together.   

“Let's not wait for each other again. we are already late.”
Jada muttered but Mariam still heard.

“You guys made me and Anike late and we are not complaining o.”

“I am not complaining too. Just a suggestion.”
Jada said, flipping her braids.

She looked beautiful today too and her skirt was a little shorter than mine leaving her long chocolate legs on display.

I had no idea where the auditorium was but following them, I am sure I will reach my destination even though they had to fight throughout the trip.

The assembly took place in the auditorium and we sat through it all.

The AC almost made me fall asleep during the Principal’s speech. Mariam even slept.  The speech was a typical welcome back to school. and she just listed a whole lot of activities and talked about prefects making me notice the seniors standing at the front.

The assembly was also quick and after a series of prayers, handing the term to God’s hands the assembly was over.

“Kira might be chosen as the head girl.”
Mercy said,
The four of us were walking to wherever class two is meant to be. And I just kept shut in their conversation because I don't even know who Kira is. 

I just looked around, staring at people’s uniforms and how they were rocking it and just thinking about my life.

“Whatever, I think Judith deserves it more.”
Jada argued back,

“Just because you and Judith are in the debate team does not mean she is better than Kira. Come on now, Kira has done a lot for this school. Who won the most spelling bees? The most essays? The maths competition? And so much more.”

Mariam seemed to be bored out of their argument just as much as I was so she stepped away from them and moved to my side. Pulling me closer,

“Those two can argue for Africa. The funniest part, Kira and Judith are best friends. They are going to end up as head girl and assistant. Period. Both of them now want to kill themselves on top of somebody else’s matter.”

I laughed out while Mariam just rolled her eyes at the two still arguing.       
       
“Babe!"

Mercy suddenly stopped in her tracks and turned around. I followed her lead and turned around to look at the scene.

A cute looking guy pulled her into a hug,

“That is Tobi, her boyfriend.”
Mariam whispered so suddenly that I almost jumped.

“Wow.”

“Tobi meet my new friend here, Anike. Anike, Tobi my boyfriend.”
He smiled and I could not help but smile back.

“Welcome to the Royals. Jada, Mariam, how are you guys doing?”

“Not excited.”
Mariam chirped in,
He joined us and we walked together.

“Who do you think will be the head girl?”
Mercy asked, bringing up the topic again.

“Girl shut up with this stuff na.”
Mariam said and Tobi immediately wrapped his arms round Mercy. Mercy grinned and held his hand,

“Oh my God, stop this!”
Jada drew out and I suddenly noticed we were now inside a classroom.

I looked around and the classroom was half empty and half filled up. I could only recognize two people, Jayden and Jeff. They were seated together and just talking.

The tables and chairs here were a big upgrade from where I came from.

The hard wood that always made my butt ache after sitting for hours was replaced by one that was actually looking soft.

The chairs were paired and the seating arrangement seemed to contain at most twenty five people.

Jada walked past me and sat on a chair in the middle. She waved at me to join her and even though I prefer seating at the front, I decided to just go with her.

I sat beside her dropping my bag first.

Mariam took the seat in front of us while Mercy sat beside her.

Tobi walked up to Jeff, dropping his bag on the chair in front of theirs. They did a little bro handshake thing and he ran back to Mercy.

I watched them talk and talk. Mariam just placed her head on her table falling asleep. Jada went to her brother’s seat and I found myself mirroring Mariam’s action. Slowly falling asleep.

“Good morning everyone.”

“Anike. Anike.”
I heard Jada call, lightly tapping my back.

“Hmm.”
I replied slowly, sitting straight.

“thanks.”
I muttered to Jada before facing the teacher standing at the front of the class.

“I am Mrs June. Your new class teacher. I have heard a lot about this class and please I do not want any of that drama this term. I want a peaceful class two this year. And who is the class captain?”
Everyone turned to Jeff and he slowly stood up.

“Oh, I will be sending a document to your mail. Meet me when you are free.”

“Okay ma’am.”

“We have a new student.”
Oh My God!

That is me!

I heard murmurs follow after that statement and I could feel everyone’s stare on me.
God, I feel like just disappearing at this moment.

“Please introduce yourself to the class.”
Now I have to introduce myself.
Wahala!

I glanced at Jada and she just smiled,
This is not happening?

My legs felt jelly but I had to stand up because the teacher was staring hard at me.

I walked slowly to the front of the class and that voice came back.

I felt like covering my legs or something especially when I heard someone say something like fat.

“Uhm… Good morning everyone. I am Anike Coker and I hope we get along.”

When the class clapped, I looked up from my sneakers and at the faces.

Some were frowning, others were smiling and some just looked indifferent.

“thank you Anike. Welcome to the Royals.”
The teacher said with a warm smile and I almost ran back to my seat.

“I will send further information to your mails since your teacher is already here. I hope we have a great time together in class two. Have a nice day.” 

“And you too ma’am.”
Some responded and I was part of the some that just stared as she walked out.

I thought the first day of resumption is always a free day.

But seeing the teacher walk in and another one walk in, no free time until break, I realised this place is not just beautiful but tough.

“The chemistry teacher will be here soon.”
Jada said after she finished typing down her notes on her laptop.

“You know this class is for the smart, so we have an accelerated class compared to others.”
Really?
So, is everyone here actually that intelligent?

“wow.”

The chemistry teacher walked in just like they said and after much greeting he got straight to the point.

“I will be asking questions today. I hope you guys have read ahead?”

“Yes sir.”

“Jeff, can you state Hess law?”
Everyone turned around to face Jeff and he slowly stood up with a smile he said,

“I don’t know it sir.”

“Uhm Aliya any thoughts?”

Everyone turned to her and she stood up with an annoyed look.

“Well sir, when you said read ahead, you should ask questions on electrolysis instead.”

Ahh!

I stared open mouthed at the guts she had to say that to the teacher. The man just shook his head and began his search again.

“Nini, any comment?”

A pretty girl with glasses stood up.
She was dressed complete, adding her blazers. She dragged on it,

“No sir. I must have missed it while reading.”

“Well, I am disappointed. One more person. uhm, the new student. Any idea?”

New student?

I looked round the class until I remembered I was the new student.

I have a name too sir.

I stood up though burying my thoughts.

I have hated answering questions in class since forever and now I have to do that on my first day.

I cleared my throat for a while,

“Hess’ law states that the enthalpy change of a reaction remains constant regardless of the route through which the change occurs provided that the conditions at the beginning of the reaction are equal to the final conditions.”
The chemistry teacher grinned,

“well thank you so much Anike. Have your seat.”
Oh, so he knew my name.

I sat down back but someone said something so clear that I am sure everyone heard,

“Show off.”

Hmmm,

First day in class and dem Don they talk.
Who do you think said show off?
