Chapter 48 | Nabi
I'll never forget the reactions.
The widened eyes, the whispers, the heads snapping toward us, the gasps.
Yoongi and I walked into school hand in hand, and the reaction was immediate. I had warned him that he'd be judged, since everyone thought I was a slut. But he said no one's opinion mattered to him in the end except mine. "And besides," he'd said. "I know you and the truth so fuck all to everyone else."
The best reaction was Haneul's. He generally kept away from me, but I saw him pop his head into the hallway and stare as, I assume, word made it around to him. His mouth fell open and before I could even say or do anything, I saw fire flash in his eyes. I looked over at Yoongi, who was smirking at Haneul with raised eyebrows. He held up our intertwined hands. "Jealous now?" he said as we walked past him.
"What was that?" I asked.
"Just had to prove a point from a long time ago."
Once we'd gotten settled back into a routine at school, we fell back into something akin to our old dynamic. We weren't so sickeningly sweet to each other anymore. I guess the "honeymoon phase" was over. I started teasing him endlessly again, and he started acting eternally annoyed by it again. It was funny now, though, as both of us knew the other was being silly.
"I came up with a nickname for you," Yoongi randomly said one day as we walked to lunch. I stopped walking and looked over at him in surprise.
"A nickname? Why?"
"'I feel like you need a nickname, and friends give each other nicknames.'" He repeated my own words from so long ago back to me. "Now that we're friends, I can do the same for you."
I grinned. "Did you decide to go with 'Nosy Bitch' like I picked out?" I asked excitedly.
He shook his head, partly to tell me no and partly to show his exasperation with me.
"Then what is it?!" The anticipation was making me giddy.
"Nabi," he said. I raised my eyebrows as he smiled shyly at me. After a few moments of no further reaction, his smile faded. "Do you not like it?"
"Is it because I 'float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'?"
He scoffed. "The only thing you sting with is annoyance."
"Yah!" I stuck my tongue out at him. "Then why Nabi?"
"I did remember the nickname you picked out. But I can't call my girlfriend a nosy bitch, no matter how accurate it may be. Then the other night, I was looking through my phone at pictures of us, and I came across the one I took of you at the zoo on that Biology field trip."
I blinked. "The one in the butterfly habitat?" I asked.
"Yeah." He smiled.
"The one with the butterfly on my nose?"
"Y-yeah..." He stammered as I narrowed my eyes.
"The one you told me you deleted after sending it to me?"
Yoongi's cheeks immediately flushed. "Uh, I... yeah, that one."
"Damn it, Yoongles! Now I owe Jin 15,000 won!"
He stared at me. "What?"
I sighed as I shook my head. "Nevermind. So 'Nabi' cause of that day at the zoo?"
He still looked confused, but didn't question me any further. "Yes, and because after I finally started realizing that being around you wasn't too bad, I changed the emoji next to your name to a butterfly in my contacts. And – "
"What was the emoji before?"
"Huh?"
"What was the original emoji you used in my contact name?"
"Umm..."
"Was it the unamused face?"
"No..."
"The weary face? Oh, or just the angry one?"
"I – "
"The cussing one?! It wasn't the vomiting one, was it? Cause that's mean."
"It – "
"Okay, okay, it actually is kinda funny if you – "
"IT WAS THE ROLLING EYES ONE!"
I stared at him. "Because I rolled my eyes a lot?"
"Uh...sure, let's go with that."
"I'm being sarcastic." I scoffed. "I'm not stupid, Yoongles. Anyway, the rolling eyes one is kinda cliché, don't you think? I'd have thought you'd have been cleverer than that. Like... Oh, the middle finger one would've been an excellent choice! Remember how you flipped me off the first day we met?" I smiled and sighed fondly, recalling the memory.
He rolled his eyes. 'Hmm, maybe the rolling eyes face was appropriate.'
"What about me?" he suddenly asked.
"Hmm?"
"Did you use an emoji in my contact name?"
"Of course! It was an angry cat."
"What? Why?"
"Because you were always angry with me! And you remind me of a cat." I shrugged.
"What the hell? How do I remind you of a cat?!"
"Well, your eyes, obviously. And sometimes, when you do that thing with your lips – "
"What thing?!"
"Calm down! Why are you so oppressed? Cats are adorable!"
"I'm not oppre – "
"And they're sleepy creatures. And they're picky about who they like. And they purr when they're happy."
"I do not purr!"
"You hum, which is basically the same thing."
"No, it's not!"
"If you don't calm down, I'm gonna have to change it back!"
He paused. "Oh, you changed it?"
"Well, yeah. It's the heart eyes one now. Cause you love me!"
He smiled. "You're right. And I'm sorry. It shouldn't matter that it used to be a cat. That was – "
"Used to be?" I interrupted. "No, it's still a cat, silly! Just the cat with heart eyes instead of the angry one!"
"Are you serious?!"
"We can sit here all day while you rant your offense, but I would really like to know your next point as to why you've named me after an insect."
He furrowed his brow. "Next point?"
I smiled, happy the cat discussion seemed to be subsiding. "Yeah, before we got off on an emoji tangent, you said, 'And' as though you had another reason."
His lips formed an 'o' shape as it seemed to dawn on him. The tips of his ears suddenly turned pink, and I watched him curiously as he scratched the back of his neck absentmindedly.
"Well, uh, you...you give me butterflies," he admitted quietly.
My breath hitched. "Yoongles, that is so..."
"Sweet? Creative? Romantic?" he began to offer as my pause became longer.
"...cheesy!" His face fell and I burst into laughter.
"I LOVE it!" I exclaimed and his smile hesitantly reappeared.
"You're so cute!" I smirked, booping his nose. He swatted my hand away.
"Aish, you made me feel stupid there for a minute."
"Oh, Yoongles!" I giggled as I took his hand and interlaced our fingers. "We both know that I don't make you feel stupid. I make you feel grumpy!" I stood on my tiptoes and pecked his lips. "And you love it."
He rolled his eyes, but I could see that the tips of his ears had graduated from pink to red. I dropped back onto my heels and grinned at him. "I really do love the nickname," I said sincerely. "It's sweet and creative and romantic."
He suddenly and swiftly leaned down and captured my lips with his. It was much more than a peck. When he eventually pulled away, I stepped back and met his eyes as I placed a hand on my chest. "You give me butterflies, too," I said breathlessly.
He dropped my hand and smirked as he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulled me closer and whispered in my ear.
"And you make me feel a lot more than grumpy."
