Chapter 41
Zuko and I had finally flown all the way to the Western Air temple. We landed the air balloon and looked into the vast open sky.
"So... we just going to scale down before the Avatar can see us?" I said peaking down at the cliff above the temple's ground.
"That's the only choice we have. Help me secure the rope."
"Rodger that!" I exclaimed helping get out the rope.
I scaled down the rope after Zuko, holding the rope tightly in my grasp.
The Air Temple was even more grandiose than I remembered, we had looked for the Avatar here a week into Zuko's banishment. Funny, how different everything was now.
The stone structures grew heavy with greenery against the cliffside. Statutes of Airbenders greeted us as we descended all the way to the ground.
Zuko looked dazed,
"Is something wrong?" I grabbed his hand.
"I just remember that the last time I was here... it was with Uncle." Joy faded from his eyes.
"If he were here... he would be proud of you Zuko. We'll see him again... but until then you're stuck with me."
A soft smile grew on his pale face.
"Thanks (Y/N)."
"Now come on I see the Avatar's bison let's go hide because I'm guessing you want to practice what you want to say."
"How... how did you know that was my plan?" He asked startled.
"I know you well Zuko. I spent 3 years banished with your dumb ass."
~
We went within the forest surrounding the temple for Zuko to practice, I sat down on a tree log,
"Okay hit me pretend I'm that Avatar."
"But you're way prettier than the Avatar." He blushed looking down at the ground.
"Dang you're really just going to do my man Aang dirty like that?"
"Whose Aang?" Zuko questioned.
"That's the Avatar's name!"
"I umm I knew that." Zuko muttered, "can we just get started now?"
"Alright I'm listening."
"Hello, Zuko here. But I guess you probably already know me... sort of..oh and this is (Y/N) but she told me you already met her. Uh, so the thing is.. I have a lot of firebending experience and I'm considered to be pretty good at it. Well you've seen me... you know, when I was attacking you? Uh.. yeah, I guess I should apologize for that. But anyway I'm good now. I mean, I thought I was good before, but now I realize I was bad. But anyway.. I think it's time I joined your group and taught the Avatar firebending."
I stayed silent trying not to laugh or fall off my log.
"Well what's your answer?" Zuko snapped.
"Umm... good try hotman that was uhh something."
"Was it that bad? How am I supposed to convince these people I'm on their side? What would Uncle do?"
"Do you want me to answer that?" I sighed.
"Zuko you have to look within yourself to save yourself from your other self. Only then will your true self reveal itself..." he said imitating Iroh's voice, " even when I'm talking for him, I can't figure out what he means!"
"Hmm what would Azula do?" I crossed my arms.
"Listen, Avatar, I can join your group or I can do something unspeakably horrible to you and your friends. Your choice. I guess I'm not that good at impersonations."
"No those were umm Interesting. I think we need to just go for it."
"But I'm not ready!" Zuko retorted.
"They trust me Zuko, if we go together I can tell them you've changed so let's go." I stammered holding his hand against mine.
"Fine but if they try to hurt you..."
"They're not going to hurt me Zuko! We're on their side... here," I placed a kiss on his cheek, "boom kiss for good luck let's join the Avatar!"
~
We waited patiently for the Avatar to see us. Maybe hiding behind the Avatar's bison wasn't a good idea. Suddenly I heard Toph,
"I think that will have to wait."
Appa moved leaving us exposed,
"Hello Zuko here."
"Umm I'm (Y/N) remember me. Well I'm back now. " I chirped in awkardly laughing.
The whole gang went into a defensive position ready to attack. Okay... this was not going well.
"Hey, we heard you guys flying around down there, so we thought we'd just wait for you here." Zuko awkwardly smiled holding my hand.
Appa growled before licking Zuko and I several times.
"I know you must be surprised to see me here..." Zuko muttered.
"Not really, since you followed us all over the world." Sokka argued, "if anything I want to know why (Y/N) is still with you."
"Right... well uh.. anyway what I wanted to tell you about is that I've changed as (Y/N) here can tell you. And I uh I'm good now and well I think I should join your group. Oh and I can teach firebending to you... and (Y/N) could help too. See I uh.."
"You want to what now?" Toph snapped.
"You can't possibly think that any of us would trust you can you? I mean how stupid do you think we are?" Katara yelled.
"Yeah, all you've ever done is try to hunt us down and capture Aang." Sokka added.
"I've done some good things. I mean I could've stolen your bison in Ba Sing Sa but I set him free! That's something. "
"Appa does seem to like him..." Toph observed as Appa gave Zuko a lick.
"He probably just covered himself in honey or something so that Appa would lick him. I'm not buying it." Sokka replied.
"I can understand why you wouldn't trust me and I know I've made some mistakes in the past..."
Sokka and Katara ranted my giving examples of all the times Zuko had wronged them.
"Look... I admit I've done sone awful things. I was wrong to try to capture you and I'm sorry I attacked the water tribe. And I never should have sent that Fire Nation assassin after you...I'm going to try to stop him."
"Zuko you did what?" I snapped before shoving my face into my palm.
"Wait you sent combustion man after us?" Sokka hissed, boomerang in hand.
"Well, that's not his name but.."
"Oh, sorry I didn't mean to insult your friend!" Sokka retorted.
"He's not my friend!"
"That guy locked me and Katara in jail and tried to blow us all up!" Toph accused.
"Why aren't you saying anything? You once said you thought we could be friends. You know I have good in me... and you know (Y/N) trusts me." Zuko asked Aang.
"There's no way we could trust you after everything you've done. We'll never let you join us."
"You need to get out of here, now. And take (Y/N) with you..." Katara ordered.
"I'm trying to explain that I'm not that person anymore. And don't put (Y/N) at fault for my mistakes." Zuko scoffed nearing the gaang.
"Either you leave or we attack." Sokka demanded as the whole gaang prepared to fight.
"Zuko... let's just go.." I said tugging on his arm.
"If you won't accept me as a friend then maybe you'll take me as a prisoner." Zuko muttered kneeling on the ground.
"No we won't!" Katara lashed out knocking Zuko over with her waterbending, "Get out of here and don't come back. And if we ever see you again... well we'd better not see you or (Y/N) again!"
Zuko sat drenched in water looking completely defeated. I helped him up,
"Come on let's get out of here..."
~
"Ugh I can't believe how stupid I am! I mean what was I thinking? Telling them I sent an assassin after them? Why didn't I just say Azula did that? They would've believed that. Stupid."
"There there..." I said awkwardly patting his shoulder. We were back in the forest surrounding the air temple. I sat back on my log.
"Maybe I'm not meant to be good..."
"Zuko don't say that... we'll figure out something okay? Its not like I have the best track record either... I helped you with a lot of the horrible things that you did."
"Wow thanks for reminding me..." Zuko crossed his arms.
"Look would a hug make you feel better? That usually works with you.. "
"It's not the time (Y/N)... let's just go try to find something to eat and go to bed. It's getting late anyway." Zuko muttered bitterly.
~
I laid under the moonlight in Zuko's arms until I suddenly jolted awake.
"(Y/N)! Did you hear that?" Zuko questioned.
"Hear what Zuko? It's the middle of the night."
Suddenly, the sound of leaves being crushed under feet neared, we weren't alone.
"Who's there? Stay back!"
Zuko snapped throwing a ball of fire towards the noise.
I looked up to see Toph falling to the ground,
"Ow! You burned my feet."
"I'm sorry... it was a mistake!" Zuko apologized getting up.
"Get away from me!" Toph yelled crawling away and throwing rocks at us.
"Let me help you. I'm sorry!" Zuko reached to her.
"Get off me, get off me!" Toph screamed earthbending a large spike out of the ground to send Zuko away.
"I-I didn't know it was you!"
"Toph please wait! He didn't mean too!" I exclaimed trying to get to her before she vanished into the darkness.
"Come back!" Zuko grunted in pain before clashing onto the ground, "Why am I so bad at being good?"
~
Finally it was morning again, after I got Zuko to do some meditation, we were both able to sleep.
Suddenly, I heard a loud bang,
"What now!"
I looked up to see an explosion in the sky,
"Zuko! Do you see that?"
His eyes narrowed, the specks of gold dull,
"Oh no..."
"What? What's wrong?"
"We have to get to the Avatar now, that boom was created by the assassin I sent... he has to be close, come on before it's to late." Zuko panicked grabbing my hand.
~
"Over there!" I exclaimed he was standing on a ledge overlooking the air temple.
Zuko and I swung in on our rope landing on the man's back. But he sent an explosion before we could stop him. I watched as the explosion bloomed into the air causing the whole temple to shake.
"Stop! I don't want you hunting the Avatar anymore!" Zuko shouted, "the mission is off I'm ordering you to stop!"
The man pushed Zuko out of the way and shot another explosion at the gaang who were hiding behind a stone formation.
"If you keep attacking I won't pay you!" Zuko comanded launching back at the man. Zuko attempted to send a flame punch his way but the man easily stopped him.
"All right, I'll pay you double if you stop!"
The man ignored Zuko before firing a shot his way which I tried to block.
Zuko was sent off the ledge holding a tree root grown onto the side of the structure.
Before going to help Zuko, I launched a firekick at the man but it was too late. I watched more of his explosions descended down to attack the gaang.
My attention turned to Zuko as the gaang tried to fight back against the man. Sokka even threw his boomerang at the man hitting his third eye. I reached my hand out down towards him.
"(Y/N)... forget about me... go get him!" Zuko comanded.
I nodded and turned back towards combustion man, "hey I think you forgot someone!" I sent a flurry of embers hurling towards him.
I watched as he redirected my fire but when he tried to send an explosion at me boom.
The boomerang hit to his eye caused him to explode himself. The explosion knocked me back, I watched the man fall off the ledge and disappear into the ashes.
"Umm (Y/N) a little help here!" Zuko called still dangling off the edge.
"Oh right!"
~
Zuko and I stood awkwardly in front of the gaang.
"I can't believe I'm saying this but..
Thanks you two." Aang said softly.
"Hey, what about me? I did the boomerang thing." Sokka bragged.
"Listen, I know I didn't explain myself very well yesterday. I've been through a lot in the past few years, and it's been hard. But I'm realizing that I had to go through all those things to learn the truth I thought I had lost my honot and that somehow my father could return it to me. But I know now that no one can give you your honor. It's something you earn for yourself by choosing to do what's right. All I want now is to play my part in ending this war. And I know my destiny is to help you restore balance to the world." Zuko muttered before turning to Toph, "I'm sorry for what I did to you, it was an accident. Fire can be dangerous and wild. So as a firebender, I need to be more careful and control my bending so I don't hurt people unintentionally."
"I think you are supposed to be my firebending teacher. When I first tried firebending... I burned Katara. And after that, I never wanted to firebend again. But now I know how easy it is to hurt the people you love. I'd like you to teach me." Aang spoke bowing before Zuko.
"Thank you." Zuko replied bowing back, "I'm so happy you've accepted me into your group."
"Guess that means I'm also joining back in, Zuko and I are kind of a package deal. I'm a bit younger than Zuko so my bending isn't as good, but I would be willing to help the Avatar any way I can." I smirked.
"Not so fast, I still have to ask my friends if it's ok with them. Toph, you're the one that Zuko burned. What do you think?"
"Go ahead and let them join. It'll give me plenty of time to get back at Zuko for burning my feet." She replied.
"Sokka?" Aang asked.
"Hey, all I want is to defeat the Fire Lord. If you think this is the way to do it, then I'm all for it."
"Katara?"
"I'll go along with whatever you think is right." She muttered. I could see the distaste brewing in her glance.
"I won't let you down, I promise!" Zuko exclaimed.
~
We walked down the halls of the Air temple so Sokka could show us your rooms,
"Look I know you two are used to sleeping by eachother, but there's only one bed per room so (Y/N) you're this room. Zuko, you're the one over there, home sweet home. I guess you know for now. Unpack.. lunch soon. Uh welcome aboard and (Y/N)... welcome back I guess.. good thing I didn't misplace you for to long.."
Zuko and I hurried into our rooms as Sokka went away with Aang.
My "belongings" didn't really consist of much anymore so it didn't take to long to unpack. As I went back into the hall I saw Katara leave Zuko's room,
"What did she want with you?"
"Umm it's nothing (Y/N)... did you unpack already?"
"Yeah.. you know for all the places we've been I haven't collected much.." I laughed, "is that a picture of Iroh?"
"Yeah I brought it with me." Zuko blushed looking off into the distance.
"Zuko don't be sad you've found your destiny now. Iroh will be so happy when you see him again!" I exclaimed.
"I hope..."
I turned around to go back to my room.
Funny, with all this talk of destiny today... it's made me realize I still didn't know mine.
