JJ MAYBANK hated a lot of people, and kooks mostly filled up that list. But the one at the top, was a new addition to the kook community, Gianna Matthews. The brunette was a wolf in sheep's clothing according to JJ. Strictly because of the fact that she stole his girlfriend of a year not even two months after she moved to Kildare. Well technically, his ex came out as a lesbian and Gianna was the person she left him for. But still. Gianna was to blame. Even more so when his ex—his best friend since he was twelve-years-old—distanced herself from JJ and the pogues completely. All to bond with Gianna and her new kook friends. The lack of Veronica Sparks' presence was noticeable and left JJ to stew in his hatred and loss of the person who meant so much to him, the only person he'd actually had feelings for. He'd never been able to get close to people due to his shitty relationship with his father and the fact his mom split when he was just a kid. That's why Ronnie meant so much to him, she was different from the pogues, she was the only one he truly let in. And he lost it all to a kook.

Every time he saw the short brunette it was like any rational thinking left his brain and he made it a point to ruin her day. And of course it never helped that Ronnie was right by her side. The sight almost mocking him, reminding him of what he had lost to Gianna. The worst part...the part that made irritation instantly itch at his skin...Gianna never reacted. Through it all, the asshole comments, the scenes he caused, the new kook took it all in stride. The confrontations never escalated like he wanted them to. He wanted her to cuss him out, slap him, make a classist comment, anything to make his hate valid. But she would always make a point to just shut him down, like she always had something better to do than waste time on a conversation with him. That only pissed him off more. Why couldn't she hate him like he hated her?

GIANNA MATTHEWS made it a point to not waste her life away with anger. She hated putting energy into animosity for others. She had always believed there was more to life than those negative feelings. Granted, there's always been people she disliked—most of them currently being her kook peers. At times she's felt like an outsider amongst them, but that's what happens when your mother marries rich. Gianna spent most of her life very much in lower middle class with her single mom. Since she was seven, it had just been her and her mother, going through life together, as a team. All until her mother met Hugh Collins two years ago. And things changed...fast. Before she knew it, her life she had built in Charleston was uprooted to a beach town called Kildare. A new place, an unwanted restart. The craziest part of it all, her and her mother were no longer living paycheck to paycheck, they were rich. So much so that it freaked Gianna out at times. Hugh came from generations of money, and didn't hesitate to bring them into his world, even if they were so unfamiliar with it.

Gianna didn't exactly enjoy the new world she was brought into, it was filled with selfish people that had everything handed to them their entire lives. She felt isolated, an outsider amongst her materialistic peers. Veronica Sparks broke her free, saving Gianna from drowning in her own isolation forever. She met the blonde pogue through their shared friend Beck—the one kook that Gianna was actually able to tolerate enough to be friends with. Ronnie and Gianna had an instant connection that made them inseparable. Gianna felt like she finally found the person that could actually understand her, making her feel less like an outsider in her new life. While their connection only grew stronger with each passing day, it caused their friendship to grow into something else. Gianna never really labeled herself or her sexuality, just finding it was easier to like who she liked, regardless of gender. And she liked Ronnie a lot. But she kept it to herself due to Ronnie having a boyfriend. She was okay with that, and would be, for the sake of Ronnie. Well, up until Ronnie came out and broke up with JJ.

She got with Ronnie a little bit after that, and it meant a lot of her. Finally having someone who understood her as such lengths, Gianna no longer felt alone. But one thing led to another and it only lasted a few months, the two girls finding a friendship was better for them. In the time that they were together, it changed a lot for Ronnie. Gianna had the privilege to watch her finally be able to be the person she truly was, the person Ronnie kept hidden for fifteen years. The only one who truly hated all this change was JJ Maybank. He hated Gianna, the girl knew that, oh she definitely knew. But she didn't hate him. She knew he was confused and hurt by losing Ronnie, which a lot of his anger was stemming from. While at times, she thought she didn't deserve all the hatred from him, she understood it. He didn't get it completely and that was okay. She never held it against him, she hoped he'd eventually have that desperately needed epiphany and he'd finally stop being a dick towards her.

Unbeknownst to Gianna, she was the person—the reason that the epiphany dropped directly into his lap. All it took was one simple moment, just a second for their opinions of each other to be completely altered forever. And there was no going back after that—it's not like they wanted to anyway.
