"When I wrote Armatage Shanks, it was right before Dookie came out and I was really at odds with myself. I was like, man, do I really want to do this? A lot of time, I was thinking about suicide, how it's easy to kill yourself, but so hard to stay alive. I was in a break-up with my then-girlfriend, a tota ravind punk rocker who didn't approve of me being on a major label. She moved down Ecuador, sying, she couldn't live in a world with McDonald's and such. It was fucking me up pretty bad."

"Quand j'ai écrit Armatage Shanks, c'était juste avant que Dookie sorte et j'étais vraiment en désaccord avec moi-même. J'étais genre mec, est-ce que je veux vraiment faire ça? Longtemps, je pensais au suicide, comment c'est si facile de te tuer, mais si difficile de rester. J'étais en rupture avec ma petite-amie, une vrai rocker punk qui n'approuvait pas ce que je sois sur un label majeur. Elle a déménagé en Équateur, disant qu'elle ne pouvait pas vivre dans un monde avec McDonald et tel. Ça m'a foutu en l'air."
