Chapter Twelve: Yet Another Cliche Love Trope
I stepped out into the cool night air, looking around at my surroundings. Techno was nowhere to be found. I walked out into the parking lot, barely noticing a somewhat familiar looking man walking past me into the restaurant. Unable to find Techno, I decided to head back into the restaurant, and as I turned around, I saw him. He was lying on the tin roof of the building, gazing up at the sky.
"Techno?" I asked, perplexed. "What the heck are you up there for?"
He sat up and looked down at me, wordlessly gesturing to a ladder leading up to the roof. I walked over to it, grasping the rungs and climbing up the ladder. When I reached the roof, I crawled over to where he was laying and copied his position beside him.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" he murmured, looking at me, and I, being the dumbass I am and not observing the blatantly obvious hint, looked up at the sky.
The sun was beginning to set over the horizon. Various hues of orange, yellow, blue, and purple lay across the sky like a painting. The stars were barely visible in the sky, but they soon were going to stand out in the night. It was truly a beautiful sight.
"You're right, Techno," I said, smiling. "Do you do this often? Climb up onto random buildings to stargaze?"
"Sometimes," Techno responded.
"What made you do it this time?" I asked.
Techno didn't immediately respond. He just looked into the sky, his eyes glazed over behind his mask.
"Ballora."
The answer startled me, and I sat up, looking at him.
"What does she have to do with anything?" I was confused. "I mean, I know she killed Spongebob, and I didn't think you and him were close. You guys had met each other just today."
"That doesn't matter," Techno interjected. "It doesn't matter if it's one day, or several; feelings for someone will consume you, no matter how long it takes. But no, it's not about Spongebob. It's just-"
He paused for a moment, as if he was having an internal struggle.
"Do you like her?"
I tilted my head, confused.
"Why do you ask?" I wondered.
Techno shook his head. "I don't know. It'd just seem strange, you know, to be in love with a killer."
"Well...not necessarily." I said. "I admit, I had felt something when we met. I don't know if it was love, or something else, but something was there. But not anymore," I reassured him. "she killed my friend. I don't love her."
Techno nodded at me, and for a brief moment, I thought I saw saw relief flicker in his eyes. It was only for a moment though; he blinked and it was gone.
"Is there anyone that you do love?" he asked. I thought for a moment, wondering the best way to phrase what was going through my mind.
"Well...there is someone," I began, but quickly decided not to say. "I mean- not really! It doesn't matter! I don't really love anyone!"
Techno perked up. "Oh?" he asked, an odd emotion in his eyes that I couldn't distinguish. "And who might that be?"
"Uh-" I began to sweat nervously, unsure of what to say. Before I could say anything further, a voice shouted from below.
"WONDER! TECHNO!"
It was Glitch. I sighed in relief as I sat up, looking down at them.
"Glitch?" I noticed a somewhat worried look in their eyes. "What happened?"
Glitch sighed, as though the news they bore wouldn't be helpful to us in any way.
"We have a problem." they announced dramatically.
"Also Sonic in a maid dress."
