WHAT IS THE PURSUIT OF A LEGACY? Is it power? Is it names? Is it blood? Is it being remembered for all time? Names etched into texts, winning battles, conquering Westeros, dying a dragon riders death, or banners of House Targaryen held high in the Red Keep? It is something that Aemma Velaryon longs to know. She aches to know why.

From the very moment of her birth Aemma Velaryon is known by all in the realm to be a mirror of her mother through her looks and her wits. Aemma was high-strung, wild and untamed. Yet, she succumbs in the weight of her duty as a Princess ⎯⎯ the second child of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon, twin to her older brother Jacaerys by a few mere minutes. She was born burning aflame with the Blood of the Dragon in her veins.

Aemma was a Jewel to the people, glistening and bright and precious. The whispers of the true linage of Aemma and her brothers is questioned relentlessly with stares and looks, words unspoken but the question lingers in the eyes of those in close proximity, that Aemma and her siblings ⎯⎯ the heir to the Iron Throne, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen has produced bastard children.

The world is shifting, spinning out of control far more in a way that Aemma knows is impossible to slow down. She sees the facade her mother draws is faltering and fading, cracking like fancy glassware, clinging to every word and option. Flames are burning, molten hot and it cannot be put out.

The death and funeral of Lady Laena Velaryon is a catalyst in its wake. Blood is against blood in the wake of Aemond claiming Vhagar and the ill-spoken words he muttered to Aemma and her brothers. The Targaryen house is further divided than ever before. A betrothal is made by the demand of King Viserys. Aegon and Aemma are to be wed. A symbol of goodwill to unite the House Targaryen as one. Fate has chosen otherwise.

Aemma knows that her mother would never leave her to a fate that is not within her daughter's own control. There are terms within her betrothal. Aemma would travel to the Red Keep from Dragonstone once a year and once she is of age, Aemma and Aegon will marry.

From behind closed doors Aegon Targaryen was drowning slipping beyond the surface into the dark depths below. There was never an escape, a way to breathe. He was carved out of stone for a duty that never fit him, a birthright that never belonged to him. The first-born son of Visyers Targaryen was raised loveless, distasteful and riddled with neglect. He ached for his mother's affections and his father's acknowledgement but it never came when all he did was try and try and try. And in turn, the wine and the women became an antidote for a brief time, a small taste of freedom and pleasure.

At her step-father Prince Daemon's words, the of the plans of usurpering her mother's claim come to light more than ever with her grandsire growing weaker and weaker and so Aemma becomes a spy. And in her time at the Red Keep Aemma is not blind or naive to what occurs by the Hand of the King or the Queen Consort. She will fight for her mother's crown and bring Aegon down with her.

And together they will burn, in the ballad of ash and fire.

Hello lovelies! Welcome to the 'Ballad of Ash and Fire.' There are just a few details surrounding my fanfic that I'd like to clear up.

Please understand that the canon timeline is altered at numerous points. Yet, the tv show (House of the Dragon) has varying differences to Fire and Blood. But it shouldn't be too much of an issue as this is written for my own entertainment and your own of course. It is important to note that I do not support Aegon in being a r*pist. I completely understand the nature and world of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon but I cannot write a character who commits such monstrous and vile actions or support it or justify it ever. Aegon is a shitty and horrible person but I adore the performance of Ty Tennant and Tom Glynn-Carney in portraying such a complex character. Think of this as an AU if you will. I will not spoil my fanfic plot but Aegon loves his lady wife a lot and he would do anything for her.

Also please don't ask for updates but instead words of encouragement work best. This is just for fun for me as the writer and for all of you as the readers. I promise to update where I can but I usually like to have a bulk of chapters pre-written before I publish.
