CHAPTER FOUR
just trying to help

⊱ ──────── {.⋅ ✯ ⋅.} ──────── ⊰

JULIET HAD ABSOLUTELY no idea how Barry convinced her to do this.

Okay. That was a lie. She did have a clue. It's called Barry Allen looks at her with his stupid green eyes and against all her willpower, she caves.

How infuriating.

Her and Barry were running — or teleporting, in Juliet's case — around the streets of Central City, stopping all sorts of crimes. Cisco, on the comms, then informed the two that there was a fire on Western and Third in downtown Central City and the firefighters weren't there yet to help the people inside.

So what were the doing? Going towards it.

"Barry?" Cisco's voice then echoed over the comms as Juliet teleported right outside the burning building, feeling kind of awkward as she stood there by her lonesome in an actual super suit. "Barry!"

"What?" Barry asked. "Did I miss it?"

"Considering you're not here, I'm going to go with yes," Juliet answered.

"Juliet's right," Cisco told him. "You overshot by about six blocks."

Barry sighed. "My bad."

Juliet then lifted her hands up, red energy traveling between her fingers. She focused on the fire and willed it to stop spreading so much and die down. Juliet doubted she could stop the entire fire, because she was still new to her powers, but she could delay it so people could get out, at least. A flash of yellow lightning — Barry — then ran inside the building,

"You there yet?" Cisco questioned.

"Cisco, there's fire everywhere!" Barry exclaimed. "Cisco, are you still there?"

"I'm trying to calm it down a little, Barr," Juliet explained. "Just . . . I don't know, bob and weave. Maybe jump."

"Yeah, all right, J. I'll leap over the fire."

What she said must've worked, because the flash of yellow lightning that was Barry brought multiple people out of the burning building. Juliet let her hands down, only for a running Barry to grab her in his arms and sprint away. Before she knew it, Barry brought them into an empty alleyway. While Barry calmly leaned against a dumpster with the hood of his suit down, Juliet ripped off her mask and stumbled back a little.

"A warning next time would be great," Juliet grumbled, blinking the black spots out of her vision to try and regain composure.

He waved her off. "Everybody's out. What else you got for us, Cisco?"

"Barry, Juliet, it's Caitlin," Caitlin then said over the comms.

The smile slipped off Barry's face, and Juliet sent him a wide-eyed look. "Hey, Caitlin. How's your day?"

"Really," Juliet deadpanned. "Really. That's the first thing that came to mind?"

"What else am I supposed to say?"

"Get back to S.T.A.R. Labs," Caitlin ordered. "Now."

"On our way," Barry replied. He held his arms out to Juliet, as if to invite her to go running again. "Come on."

"Absolutely not," Juliet refused. "I've had it with you just picking me up and running me places."

With that, she focused on the cortex of S.T.A.R. Labs. A tingling feeling spread throughout her body, and when she opened her eyes, she was standing before Cisco, Caitlin, and Dr. Wells. Barry then sped in next to her.

"Have you three lost your minds?" Caitlin inquired angrily. "Who do you think you are?"

Juliet pointed at Barry. "It was all his idea."

Barry's head whirled to look at her. "Juliet!"

"What? I'm just saying."

Cisco cleared his throat, stopping the two from arguing. "Well, I'm the eyes and ears, and they're the feet."

"This isn't funny," Caitlin said. "You two could've gotten yourself killed. You can't be running and teleporting around the city like some supersonic and ultra-powerful firemen."

"Why not?" Barry argued. "This is what we talked about — me using my speed and Juliet using her powers to do good."

"We talked about you two helping us contain other people who might have been affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion. Metahumans. And aside from Clyde Mardon, we haven't found any."

"People in this city still need help. And J and I can help them."

"We can help them," Cisco offered.

Caitlin then looked back at Dr. Wells. "Will you please say something?"

"I think what Caitlin is saying, in her own spectacularly angry way, is that we are just beginning to understand what your bodies are capable of," Dr. Wells explained. "Not to sound like a broken record, Mr. Allen and Ms. St. James, I do caution restraint."

"Dr. Wells, I doubt restraint is how you got to be the man you are today," Barry stated.

"In a wheelchair and a pariah. Lack of restraint is what made me these things. Know your limits."

Caitlin then looked between Juliet and Barry as Dr. Wells wheeled away back behind the desk of computers. "Don't expect me to patch you two up every time you break something."

"Hey, uh, anything happen out there today?" Cisco asked to Barry. "The sensors in the suit were kicking back some weird telemetry, like your vitals spiked for a few seconds."

Barry shook his head. "Never felt better. Right, J?"

Juliet glared at him. "Yeah. I really loved the part where I thought I was gonna pass out because you sped me somewhere without letting me prepare."

He playfully rolled his eyes. "You're being overdramatic."

"And you're being stupid."

A phone then vibrated in Cisco's pocket. Cisco pulled it out, only to hand it to Barry. Juliet crossed her arms as Barry answered the phone.

"Hey, Joe, everything all right?" Barry questioned. "Oh yeah, she's here. Let me put you on speaker."

Barry pulled the phone away from his ear and pressed the speaker button.

"Great," Joe began. "I got a fresh crime scene, a dead body, detectives interviewing witnesses, miles of that yellow tape stretched over everything. I'm only missing one thing. Can you guess what that is?"

Juliet offered Barry a small smile. "Back to reality."

"We'll be right there," Barry told Joe, hanging up the phone and looking down at Juliet. "Our day job beckons."

Barry then sped off. Juliet, however, walked over to her pile of clothes that she had left in the cortex. She teleported out of her suit and into her normal clothes in the blink of an eye and put her super suit down on the table.

Dr. Wells stared after Barry for a moment. "When do you think he'll realize he didn't take his clothes?"

Caitlin looked to Juliet. "Are you gonna take them with you?"

Juliet laughed. "No. He'll look so dumb, it'll be great. Bye guys."

Joe had texted her the address once Barry had hung up the phone, so she quickly teleported there behind a building. She then walked into the shop that had police cars surrounding it. Joe and Captain Singh were standing by a roped off portion of the shop, so she approached them, only to see the dead body of a man laying face down on the floor.

"Good morning," Juliet greeted. She then grimaced slightly as she looked at the body. "Not so much of a good morning for him, though."

Captain Singh sighed. "Where's your partner, St. James?"

Barry, as if on cue, then walked up to their group. "Hey, sorry I'm late."

Juliet then let out a small laugh, but quickly covered it up. Barry was decked out in all new clothes, the jacket still even having the price tag on it. He sent her a quick glare.

"Doing a little fall shopping, Mr. Allen?" Captain Singh asked as Joe ripped the price tag off of the jacket.

Barry laughed nervously. "Oh, I was going so fast this morning, I didn't even notice."

Joe then handed the two CSI's pairs of gloves. Juliet took hers and pulled them on as her and Barry ducked underneath the yellow tape.

Eddie then approached Captain Singh and Joe with a tablet. "I downloaded the surveillance footage off the video camera. Looks like only one perp."

"Can't be," Juliet cut in, looking down at the floor with her eyebrows knit in thought, stepping around the dead body. "This was done by six guys. The tracks on the ground are all crossing each other, and since there are six sets of footprints and six guns stolen, it couldn't have been just one person. We should be looking for a crew instead."

"Huh, weird," Barry then commented. "The shoes, it looks like they're all the same size. Men's tens, I'd guess. Just like you, Captain." Juliet pinched the bridge of her nose at that. "Not that you're a suspect, sir. I—"

Captain Singh and Eddie then walked away.

Juliet looked at Barry. "I truly don't know what goes through your head sometimes."

Barry rolled his eyes. "I hate you."

"No you don't."

After finishing up their investigation, Juliet, Barry, and Joe went back to the CCPD to evaluate the evidence. They went up the elevator to their floor and exited.

"Your ability to multi-task is truly remarkable," Joe said to Barry. "The way you can embarrass me, the captain, Juliet, and yourself all at the same time."

"Joe, I'm sorry," Barry responded.

"I'm starting to think Joe, I'm sorry is my actual name considering how often you say it to me."

"Okay, but Juliet was late, too."

Juliet stared at him incredulously. "Do not drag me into this."

Joe pointed at Barry. "At least she didn't walk in wearing clothes with price tags on them."

"I'm dealing with a lot right now," Barry voiced.

"Look, I know you and Juliet are. Believe me, I'm dealing with it, too. I've always had a very simple set of beliefs. Gravity makes things fall, water makes things wet. And up until a few weeks ago, I believed the fastest man could run a mile in four minutes, not four seconds."

"I could do it in three." Barry's smile then slipped off his face upon noticing Joe's expression. "Not relevant."

"You haven't said anything to Iris about all this, have you?" Joe questioned.

After the events of the tornado and during the evaluation of the crime scene at the barn, Joe had specifically asked Juliet and Barry to not tell Iris about their powers. Considering Juliet told Iris everything, it was extremely hard not telling her best friend about the biggest thing to ever happen to her.

Juliet shook her head. "Nope. We made a promise, and we keep those promises."

"Keep on lying like that, you're liable to get struck by lightning again," Joe replied.

Her mouth dropped open in shock. "Excuse me, I am a very honorable person."

Joe then pointed up the stairs. "Get up to the lab. Start processing the evidence from the gun store."

Juliet and Barry did as they were told. They climbed up the staircase and started to process all of the evidence they had gotten from the gun store in their machines. Juliet was reading over the report another time when she heard a stumble. She looked up, only to see Barry with his hands on the table while letting out a deep breath.

"You all right?" Juliet inquired in concern.

"This is all of your fault, Jules," Iris' voice then announced, stopping Barry from answering.

Juliet slowly looked away from him, still suspicious, only to see Iris walking into their lab wearing a pretty pink dress. "What did I do now?"

"I could have taken European folklore to cover my sociology requirement, but no. You said, take journalism, 'Ris. Reporters have so much fun, and European folklore is boring. Guess what, Juliet? Reporters have none of the fun. Journalism is boring. I'm bored. I blame you."

She gave the girl a smile. "But I'd bet you'd be way more bored in European folklore."

Iris then blinked at Barry. "What? Why are you staring at me like that?"

"You look really nice," Barry answered.

"Thanks. Why don't you two look nice?"

Juliet pointed her pen at Iris. "I'm going to take offense to that."

Iris sighed. "This afternoon? Suit and tie? The university is giving Simon Stagg—"

"Simon Stagg," Barry repeated, and Juliet's eyes widened — oh God, that was today?

"—some big award, and you two agreed—"

"To explain the science stuff for your article. It's all coming back to me now."

"How fast can you both get home and changed?" Iris asked.

Juliet shrugged, smirking slightly at the question. "Fast enough to make it in time."

"Hey, Allen, St. James," Eddie greeted, walking into their lab. "Joe asked me to see where you're at on the evidence from the gun store shooting. Oh, hey, Iris."

"Detective," Iris stated.

Juliet raised her eyebrow at them, who were trying so hard not to look at each other. "This is actually painful to watch. Just, like, kiss or something, because I don't want to see this anymore. We already know, remember?"

The two of them then approached each other and indulged in a sweet kiss. Juliet smiled and stood up from the chair at her desk, approaching the central table that they were working on. She gave a warning glance to Barry, who was watching Eddie and Iris with a longing look on his face.

"Ah, thanks for being so cool about this, Barry and Juliet," Eddie said as he wrapped an arm around Iris' shoulder. "I know it's not easy keeping a big secret."

Barry let out a quiet sigh. "I'm getting used to it."

Juliet wholeheartedly agreed. It was extremely hard keeping her powers from everyone — but it had to be done.

ϟ ···················· ϟ ···················· ϟ

JULIET, NOW CLAD in a pretty red dress that had lace long-sleeves and stopped at her mid-thigh and silver heels that made her just the tiniest bit taller, stood with Barry and Iris where the award ceremony was taking place. Simon Stagg had just stepped onto the stage to stand behind a podium, ready to give his acceptance speech with a glass award in his hand, so they all applauded him. Juliet was quite aware of the way her and Barry's shoulders were touching, and her heart was racing and her stomach was turning at the thought of him in a suit.

Unbelievable.

"I find it quite remarkable, having once been a timid freshman at Central City university, to be standing before you now, the Regents choice for Man of the Year," Simon announced. "While I very much appreciate the award, the real honor for me is knowing that my work in organ transference helps give people a second chance at life." He lifted up the award. "Thank you all very much for coming."

They all applauded again as they walked off the stage.

"Okay," Barry began. "All right, first things first, Simon Stagg's work in cellular cloning has led to huge advancements in the future of organ replacement—"

Iris then let out a small oh and grabbed three glasses of champagne off of a tray that was offered to them. "Are journalists allowed to drink on the job?"

Juliet took one. "Only if they share with their friends."

Barry took the glasses away from them and set them down on a nearby table. "Okay, if you are bored already, just wait till we get to the science behind cellular regeneration."

"I have missed this, you guys," Iris admitted, standing in between Barry and Juliet and linking their arms together. "I feel like we haven't spent any quality time together since you woke up from the comas."

Juliet nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we've just had a crazy few weeks."

"I thought maybe you've both been avoiding me because of Eddie." She focused on Barry. "I know you think it's wrong, me dating my dad's partner, and I just—"

"No," Barry interjected. "That is not it. At all."

"Oh!" Iris then exclaimed, looking behind the two. Juliet turned to see Simon Stagg and his security guard walking by them. "Oh! Mr. Stagg, I was wondering if I could get a quote from you for my article."

"Not now, miss," the security guard told her.

Iris waved it off as they walked away. "I'll just make something up." She turned back to Barry. "So, what were you gonna tell me? You looked like you were about to say something."

Barry opened his mouth to respond, but suddenly, gunshots rang throughout the building. Juliet's eyes widened as she whirled around, now on extremely high alert. Everyone screamed and ducked down to the ground. Juliet looked up on the stage to see a masked figure standing there with a gun in his hand.

"Quiet down!" the gunman ordered as everyone continued to make noises of shock. "All of you!"

As if on instinct, Juliet grabbed onto Barry's hand. Her heart beat against her chest, but this time it wasn't from him. Now it was from panic. Barry glanced over at her for a moment and laced their fingers together in comfort. Meanwhile, Iris gripped onto Barry's other arm. Juliet then glanced around to see more masked gunmen around the room

"Oh my god," Iris let out as the three of them ducked down to the floor.

"Quiet!" the gunman stated. He pointed his gun around the room. "How considerate! You're all wearing your finest jewelry, almost like you knew we were coming to rob you. Now everybody line up!"

Everyone started to move to form in line. Juliet reached up and gently touched the small J necklace she was wearing. It was a gift from her little sister Noelle, and she wore it everyday. Giving it up . . . she couldn't.

"Give it to me," Barry whispered to her.

"What?" Juliet questioned back.

"Your necklace. Give it to me."

She glanced both ways to see if anyone was looking before quickly taking off her necklace. Barry grabbed it discreetly and shoved it into his pocket. They joined the line, where everybody else was throwing their jewelry into a bag one of the gunmen was holding. Once the gunmen started to walk off, Barry went to follow them, a determined look on his face.

Iris was quick to stop him. "Don't. Don't."

"Freeze!" a security guard then demanded to the gunmen, running out with his gun pointed.

All of the masked gunmen turned around and pointed their gun at the security guard at the exact same time. Juliet's eyebrows knit in confusion as she watched them do so.

"D-D-Drop your weapons!"

All at once, the gunmen shot at him. Juliet gasped, but a gust of wind flew past her, and the security guard was out of harm's way. Instead of the bullets hitting the security guard, it hit the glass award. The security guard and Barry were both nowhere to be seen.

"God damn it," Juliet cursed under her breath. She grabbed onto Iris' hand. "Come on."

"Where's Barry?" Iris inquired worryingly, although Juliet knew Barry had tried to go after the guys.

"We're going to find him. Let's go."

As fast as they could in their shoes, they ran out of the building. They circled around the building until Juliet's eyes finally set on the boy she was looking for. Her eyes instantly widened. Barry was laying on the ground passed out near a dumpster.

"Barry!" she exclaimed.

With help from Iris, she helped him lean up against the dumpsters. While Iris tried saying his name multiple times to get him to wake up, Juliet discreetly placed her hand next to Barry's. She allowed red energy to travel to her fingertips and touch Barry's skin momentarily. Barry gasped and his eyes shot open.

"Barry!" Iris repeated. "I turned around and you were gone. What happened? Are you okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," Barry reassured her. "I . . . I — I went after them to try and get the plates, and I . . . I fainted."

"Are you sure you're okay?" Juliet asked in concern.

Barry nodded. "I'm all right, J. Let's just . . . let's get back inside."

Juliet and Iris helped him stand up before they slowly started to make their way back inside the building, where the cops had shown up already. Barry then reached into his pocket and offered Juliet's necklace back to her. She took it with a small smile and placed it back on. Finally, once they got back inside, they approached Joe and Eddie.

"Hi," Iris greeted.

"Iris," Eddie said.

Joe pointed at Barry and Juliet. "Where were you two?"

"Dad, go easy," Iris replied. "Jules was with me, and we found Barry outside. He fainted."

"You want me to get you a paramedic, Allen?" Eddie offered.

"No, I'm fine," Barry answered. "Thanks, Eddie."

"I thought I was dead," they then heard the security officer admit. "I saw the gun go off, and then boom. Suddenly I'm outside. I have no idea how I got there."

Joe gestured to Barry and Juliet. "Let me talk to you two for a second."

"Yeah," Barry agreed.

Juliet, Barry, and Joe then walked off to the side. She let out a deep breath. They were about to be scolded, even though Juliet had done absolutely nothing.

"You chased those gunmen, didn't you?" Joe questioned.

Juliet shook her head. "Not me. Barry. I would've, but y'know . . . Iris."

"Yeah, they must be the same guys that knocked over the gun shop earlier today," Barry revealed.

"And what were you going to do when you caught them?" Joe inquired. "Huh? Ask them nicely to pull over? You're not bulletproof. Wait, are you?"

"No, but—"

"Okay. No more heroics. Chasing bad guys is not your job, it's mine. You're not a cop. Promise me."

Barry nodded. "Promise."

Juliet sighed, even though she knew her powers could make Central City safer. "I promise."

Joe pointed at them with his notepad. "And you both know Iris is not stupid. Start making better excuses than I fainted."

"But you did faint," Juliet voiced as Joe walked away. "What happened?"

"I don't know, but I think it has to do with my powers," Barry responded. "Come on. Let's get to S.T.A.R. Labs."

ϟ ···················· ϟ ···················· ϟ

"YOU LIED TO us," Caitlin stated firmly.

They were now back at S.T.A.R. Labs so that Barry could be examined for whatever he was experiencing. Juliet leaned against the wall, still in her dress and shoes, wishing desperately to get out of the uncomfortable clothes. Don't get her wrong, she felt pretty, but she just wanted to put her pajamas on. At least Caitlin was kind enough to lend her a hair tie to she could tie her hair out of her face.

"How could you not tell us you're experiencing dizzy spells?" Caitlin continued. "We're your doctors. God knows what's going on inside your body. Your cells are in a constant state of flux. You could be experiencing cardiopulmonary failure or a transient ischemic attack."

"Mini stroke," Dr. Wells translated. "Probably not."

Caitlin then rounded on Juliet. "Are you experiencing dizzy spells?"

Juliet shook her head. "Only when I overexert myself with my powers, but that only happened once after the tornado."

Caitlin then turned back to Barry. "You of all people should know that in science, we share. We do not keep secrets."

"Wow," Cisco commented as Caitlin walked away. "I haven't seen anyone make her that angry since Ronnie."

"Ronnie was Caitlin's fiancé?" Barry asked to Dr. Wells. "The one that died the night of the Accelerator explosion?"

"Yeah," Dr. Wells confirmed. "He is . . . missed. Now, let's figure out why this is happening to you."

They brought Juliet and Barry to one of the other rooms in the cortex. While Juliet stood behind Dr. Wells and Caitlin who were sitting at some computers that showcased Barry's vitals behind a window, Barry and Cisco were in the room on the other side of the window. The room had a treadmill and a lot of boxes piled up.

"We're all set," Cisco announced. He placed his hand on the stack of boxes. "A little padding, just in case."

Cisco then walked through the door to join sitting at the desk with Caitlin and Dr. Wells. Juliet crossed her arms and shifted her weight on her feet. God, she wanted to get out of these shoes.

Barry stepped onto the treadmill. "You're sure about this, Cisco?"

"Most home treadmills have a maximum speed of about twelve miles per hour," Cisco answered. "This one has been Cisco'ed. Trust me, it can handle your speed."

"Okay."

Barry started to walk, then jog, then run on the treadmill to the point where he was running at super speed.

"Heart rate, blood pressure, nerve conduction all normal," Caitlin said.

"For Barry," Dr. Wells added.

"Brainwave function within standard limits."

Cisco laughed. "I told you the treadmill could take it."

"Caitlin," Dr. Wells interjected. "Look at the glucose levels."

"Oh my God, of course," Caitlin voiced.

"Right?"

"It was so obvious."

"Glucose levels," Dr. Wells repeated. "Barry! We think we know why you keep—"

Barry then stopped running and flew backwards into the wall of boxes. Packing peanuts flew everywhere. Juliet gasped and her hand covered her mouth in shock.

"—passing out," Dr. Wells finished.

Juliet was the first one to enter the room. She stepped over boxes and packing peanuts before finally finding Barry. With the help of Cisco and Caitlin, she brought him out to the main room of the cortex and set him down on one of the beds. Caitlin hooked him up to an I.V. bag, but Barry went through a lot in a short amount of time.

Barry finally woke up a couple minutes later, letting out a groan as he sat up. "I passed out again?"

Juliet smiled jokingly at him. "Good morning sunshine."

"Total metabolic failure brought on by acute hypoglycemia," Caitlin explained as her and Cisco helped Barry stand up.

"I'm not eating enough," Barry realized. "So an I.V. bag and I'm good to go?"

Cisco chuckled and showed him the amount of I.V. bags he had gone through.

"Try forty," Dr. Wells said. "Guess you were thirsty."

"We're gonna need to fashion you a new diet based on your metabolic changes," Caitlin announced.

"I've done a few calculations," Cisco revealed. "You need to consume an amount equal to roughly eight hundred fifty tacos. Unless we're talking cheese and guac, which is like a whole other set of equations."

Juliet's eyes widened. "Dude, lucky."

"For Mexican, I recommend Tito's," a familiar voice then suggested. "On Bruckner Avenue? Best burrito in the city."

Juliet turned to see Joe standing in the doorway. Her eyebrows knit in confusion. What was he doing here?

"Detective West," Dr. Wells greeted. "What brings you to S.T.A.R. Labs?"

Joe pointed at Barry and Juliet, who were now sitting in chairs next to each other. "When I couldn't find you two at your lab, I started doing a little research. Turns out there's been reports of a red streak and a figure materializing in different places around the city, stopping muggers, rescuing people from burning buildings."

"You didn't tell him we were working together?" Dr. Wells questioned.

"Joe, we can explain," Barry voiced.

"You already have jobs in law enforcement, Barry and Juliet," Joe stated. "I suggest you two get back to it."

"Mm-hm," Caitlin hummed in agreement. Joe looked over at her. "Don't look at me. I'm on your side."

"Detective, we all want what's best for Barry and Juliet," Dr. Wells told him.

Joe stared at Dr. Wells. "If you wanted what was best for Barry and Juliet, you'd try to talk them out of this lunacy instead of encouraging them going out there risking their lives."

"In all due respect, Joe, I don't know what the police could do going up against a man like Mardon who could control the weather," Juliet argued, kind of having enough of being talked about like she wasn't in the room. "And there's gonna be more like him. We've suspected it since the Accelerator explosion."

Joe crossed his arms. "And you're gonna do what? Catch them? Are you insane? You think because you can control energy or run real fast that you're invincible? You're not! You're just kids. My kids."

"I'm not your kid, Joe," Barry refused. "And you're not my father. My father's sitting in Iron Heights, wrongfully convicted. You were wrong about him, and you're wrong about this. Now, J and I may not be able to help him, but if we can save someone from a burning building or stop some armed thieves, we're gonna do it. And you can't stop us, so don't try."

Juliet slightly winced. That was kind of harsh. However, she couldn't help but agree with the last part. Even though Barry had kind of forced her into this whole thing, she enjoyed helping people. That was all they wanted to do.

"You think you're so smart, all of you," Joe said. "But you don't know what you don't know." He then pointed at Dr. Wells. "And I hope that you're clever enough to figure it out before somebody—" he pointed to Barry and Juliet "—gets killed."

And with that, Joe walked out of the cortex. Juliet let out a sigh and glanced over at Barry for a moment. They had a chance to be heroes, and the two of them knew they wouldn't give it up that easily.
