thirty five: i love boobies

March 21st, 1986

Bethany Wright had anxiety and major anger issues. She had always been like that since she was a kid and her older brother Brandon was the same. It was hard for Beth to control her emotions especially in terrible situations.

She wasn't a normal teen girl. She wasn't like anyone she knew, mainly because she liked girls and no one accepted her because of it. Only her close friends, parents, brother, and girlfriend really knew. Beth always had a hard time being affectionate with her girlfriend Max in public.

She didn't even think she could kiss her in public which is one of the reasons Max yelled at her once. Although they made up, the two had been arguing sometimes lately. Usually over stupid things but they got over them. But Beth had reason to believe there was something else wrong with her girlfriend.

Max had been less affectionate, depressed, and distant lately. Beth didn't know what was up but she was determined to find out.

"Beth, hurry up! Steve is gonna be here any minute with Robin!" Beth heard her brother's voice call out. Brandon had graduated high school last year and was still figuring out if he wanted to go to college or not.

He was able to get a job with Robin and Steve at Family Video which also had him dealing with Steve flirting with girls, much to his disappointment. He still hasn't taken Beth's advice from last year to just tell Steve how he felt. He was afraid Steve would reject him but Beth said otherwise.

Beth had just stepped out the shower and dried herself off. She then got out her cheerleading uniform to put it on. She tried out for the cheer squad and was able to get in, becoming co-captain soon after. She also became really good friends with the captain of the team Chrissy Cunningham.

"I'm coming Brandon! Just give me a minute!" Beth yelled for her brother to hear her before going to put on her cheer uniform. She then slipped on some white socks and white sneakers before tying her hair up in a green scrunchie.

She grabbed her sweater and backpack before quickly going downstairs. She went to grab a pancake that her mom just made passing her brother who was drinking a cup of coffee.

The sound of a car horn beeping caught their attention and Brandon quickly got up disposing his coffee and going to the door. He rolled his eyes seeing his sister still sitting down and eating her pancake.

"Bethany, they're here! Let's go!" Brandon shouted at her while standing at the front door.

"But I'm still eating." Beth mumbled with food stuffed in her mouth. Brandon gave her a look and motioned her to hurry up. "Fine!" She quickly stuffed the rest of the pancake in her mouth and quickly swallowed it.

Beth then got up giving her mom a kiss on the cheek before giving her dad one as well. Benjamin had got home from his business trip about five months ago and was now off for a while which he was happy for.

"Bye mom and dad! Love ya!" Beth called going to the door and walking out. Brandon watched her run out and rolled his eyes.

"Bye mom, dad." He waved and his mom went up to him giving him a kiss on the cheek. Brandon smiled slightly.

"Me and your dad are gonna go to the mechanic today to get your car checked out. See what the issue is with it, okay?" His mother told him and he nodded.

"Okay, thanks mom. I'll see you both later!" He called before running out the door to Steve's car.

He quickly got in the back with his sister and was greeted with Steve saying, "What took so long?" Brandon looked at him and sighed.

"An affectionate mom happened. Now start the car dumbass." Brandon replied and Steve put his hands up in defense starting the car.

They had been driving for a few minutes and Steve had started talking about his girl problems. Beth had her head leaning on the window as she looked outside. Robin had been doing her makeup in the mirror and Brandon was looking through the tapes from his Walkman.

"So there's Heidi tomorrow night, but the problem with Heidi is that she's going out of state for college. Do I wanna start another relationship that has no point other than sex?" Steve went on.

Steve had been talking to himself because no one was really listening to him. Beth held a smirk as she always fond of Steve making a fool of himself.

"I mean, I don't know. Does that make sense to you guys? Guys, are you listening?" Steve furrowed his brows.

"No."

"Uh, yes."

"Totally listening."

"What did I just say?" Steve asked the three.

"Something about sex with Linda." Robin guessed, her eyes on the car mirror.

"No, it was Crystal." Brandon corrected and Beth snickered.

"No, I'm talking about Heidi." Steve said in disappointment.

"Cut us some slack please." Robin groaned.

"Well-"

"Your love life is one of labyrinthine complexity." Robin snapped at him. "It is 7 in the morning, we have this stupid pep rally, no offense Beth, and I woke up looking a total corpse."

"You don't look like a corpse! You look perfect." Beth told her and Brandon nodded.

"She's right, you look fine Rob."

"You're worried about a basketball pep rally?" Steve scoffed. "Expect us to believe that?"

"Yeah? So?"

"So, we all know what this is about." Steve exposed. "Okay, I'm not buying that bullshit this is about Vickie."

Vickie was a beautiful redhead girl who was part of the Hawkins High marching band with Robin. Robin was so intrigued by her that she couldn't even form a word in front of her.

Beth had knew of Robin's sexuality after encountering her with Vickie in the hall. She was happy to see and hear she wasn't the only lesbian in town.

"Don't get this started again." Brandon groaned, having heard Steve tease Robin about this crush since forever.

"Absolutely not." Robin denied Steve.

"Yes it is. You know what else I think?"

"I really don't care what you think-"

"I think you gotta stop pretending to be someone else when you're around her." Steve informed. "You just gotta be yourself."

Beth rolled her eyes at Steve's advice and scoffed slightly.

"You're literally quoting me to me." Robin scoffed. "You for realize that."

"Well, maybe you need to listen to yourself." Steve shrugged. "You ever think about that, smartypants?"

"I listened to you, now look at me. Boom. Back in business." Steve finished.

"Yeah getting rejected by every girl he flirts with is being back in business." Brandon said with slight annoyance and jealousy but no one really caught on except Beth. She smirked slightly at his jealousy.

"That's because they're just not the right girls but I will find her." Steve defended.

"Mmhm sure." Brandon pursed his lips.

"He's right though Steve. You can't get a single girl and is kinda embarrassed. But who knows there could be a perfectly good girl...or boy waiting for you." Beth explained making Brandon shoot her look and kick her in the leg.

"Ow! Dude!" She yelled kicking him back. Steve rolled his eyes at the two siblings as they continued to kick at each other.

"Guys stop." Robin exclaimed. "Can we please go back to me now? It's not the same thing, okay?"

"Well-"

"Mmm, you ask out a girl and she says no. Big deal. Nothing happens." Robin started. "Maybe your ego's a little bruised and Brandon makes fun of you. I ask out the wrong, and bam, I'm a town pariah."

"I'd buy that, except Vickie is definitely not the wrong girl." Steve reassured.

"We just don't know that, do we?" Robin sighed as she took out her breath mint spray.

"She returned Fast Times paused at 53 minutes, 5 seconds." Steve reminded. "You know who pauses Fast Times at 53 minutes, 5 seconds? People who like boobies, Robin."

"Ew! Gross." Robin cringed.

"Boobies!"

"Don't say boobies!"

"Boobies." Beth snickered in the back and her brother looked at her before letting out a chuckle.

"Not a big deal, okay? I like boobies! You like boobies. Brandon likes boobies." Steve yelled.

"I like boobies! Actually I love boobies!" Beth called. "Especially Max-" Brandon than kicked her in the leg before she can speak.

"Beth likes boobies!" Steve exclaimed. "Vickie likes boobies! Definitely. It's boobies."

Beth let out a small chuckle before looking back at the window as she listened to the car music. Brandon had took out his Walkman and went through the tapes before finally finding Beat It by Micheal Jackson. He placed it inside the Walkman before placing the headphones on and pressing play.

As he looked out the window and the music went to his ears, he thought about what he would say to Steve. Remembering his sister's words to him, he knew what he had to do. He was going to tell Steve he liked him during Spring Break.
