FADED MEMORIES

Meilani giggled as she pulled Stiles with her up the stairs towards his room.
"Babe, where are we going?" Stiles asked, letting his girlfriend pull him around until they were stood outside his bedroom door.
"Somewhere where we can be alone," Meilani replied, biting her lip as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Stiles chuckled and wrapped his arms around her waist, bringing Meilani closer. "We were alone downstairs."
"Somewhere we can be more alone," Meilani whispered and leaned up as she pushed her lips onto Stiles'. His arms wrapped tighter around Meilani's waist as he pushed her up against the door, deepening the kiss.
Meilani continued to kiss Stiles as she fumbled behind her for the doorknob. Once her hand finally made contact with the doorknob, she pushed the door open and the two stumbled into the room, still in each other's embrace. The boy using his foot to kick the wooden door shut behind him.
Stiles walked Meilani backwards towards his bed. Her knees hit the end of the bed and she fell down onto her butt. Meilani pushed herself back to the head of the bed and Stiles crawled ontop of her, placing his lips back onto hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.
Stiles removed his lips from Meilani's to trail kisses down her jaw and neck, pushing up Meilani's shirt in the process.
"Stiles," Meilani breathed, bucking her hips up as she wanted more from him.
Without a second's hesitation, Stiles removed Meilani's shirt and began to kiss down her chest and stomach. Meilani's breathing was becoming heavier with each passing second, her heartrate picking up rapidly. As Stiles was making his way to the button of her jeans, Meilani gasped and quickly pushed Stiles away.
Panting, Stiles looked up at Meilani in confusion. "Babe, what's wrong?"
Meilani was flipped over onto her stomach, leaning on her forearms to keep her up. She was breathing heavily, trying to reign in the beast she knew that was going to come out. "Get away, Stiles."
Stiles scrambled up the bed, worry pooling in his chest. "Lani, what is it, baby? If we were going too fast for you, we can slow down." He reached his arm out to place a hand on Meilani's shoulder, but immediately fell off the bed in fear when he noticed she had transformed into a werewolf.
"Lani..." Stiles cautiously said, slowly rising to his feet.
"GET AWAY!" Meilani roared, jumping off the bed to attack Stiles.
Stiles let out a gasp as he quickly moved out of the way and spastically made his way towards the door to his bedroom. He flung it open and started to run down the hallway towards the stairs, Meilani hot on his heels.
Meilani grabbed Stiles by the ankle, causing him to fall onto his face. She crawled over to attack him, when Stiles kicked his foot out and sent her flying backwards across the hallway.
Seizing the opportunity of Meilani being stunned, Stiles scrambled to his feet and rushed over to the stairs and quickly leaping down the steps towards the front door. Unfortunately, Meilani was quicker than Stiles and she was already back on her feet and at the bottom of the stairs when Stiles threw the front door open.
Meilani closed the front door and slammed Stiles against it, holding him in place.
"Meilani! Meilani! MEILANI!"
Meilani gasped as she shot up in bed, her breathing ragged. She saw a figure sat on the bed next to her and it took her eyes a moment to adjust and realize it was Scott. Taking a second to look around her, she noticed she wasn't in Stiles' room but her own. It was only a nightmare.
"Mei, are you okay? I heard you screaming from down the hall. Mom wanted to come in but I figured it would be better if I came in," Scott explained, worriedly looking his sister over.
Meilani sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "Um, yeah, I'm fine, Scotty. Just a nightmare is all."
"You sure? Do you want me to stay here on the floor with you?" Scott asked. When the two were younger and their dad left, Meilani had a bunch of nightmares with most of them being about their dad. So Scott took the initiative of sleeping on Meilani's floor each time she had one. Their mom always had to be up early for work so Scott always offered to stay with Meilani so their mom could get a good amount of sleep for work. Meilani's bed was never big enough to fit the both of them so Scott always used extra blankets and pillows to make a comfy sleeping space on Meilani's wooden flooring.
"Oh, no it's okay. I'll be fine, don't worry," Meilani assured Scott, smiling to prove she was truly okay. Shaken a little from the fact she almost killed her boyfriend in the dream, but other than that she was perfectly fine.
Scott stared at Meilani for a moment, as if gauging if he should just stay anyway or go back to his room and get a few more hours of sleep before school. After a moment, Scott nodded and leaned over to hug his twin. "Get some sleep okay? I don't need you falling asleep in class again."
Meilani playfully pushed Scott away from her. "Okay that was one time. Let it go."
"Hey, listen, if mom won't let it go and bitch to me all the time about making sure I won't fall asleep, then I won't let it go," Scott teased before standing up and making his way back to his room down the hall.
Meilani sighed as she fell back against her pillows and closed her eyes, falling into a dreamless sleep for the rest of the night.
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
"So you killed me," Stiles stated as he followed Meilani into the school the next morning.
"I don't know! I just woke up," Meilani replied, fixing her bag on her shoulder. "I was sweating like crazy and I couldn't breathe. I never had a dream where I woke up like that before."
"Really? I have and it usually ends a little differently," Stiles said, causing Meilani to roll her eyes and playfully shove him.
"Okay: A: I meant I never had a dream that felt that real before. B: please never give me so much details about us together in bed," Meilani said, not even wanting to know what dreams Stiles was having of the two of them. Granted, she basically almost had one of those dreams about her and Stiles, but hers ended in almost death. His probably ended in a family and marriage and Meilani couldn't even think about procreating while being a wolf.
Stiles smirked and nudged Meilani in the shoulder. "Not like you don't know how what it's like anyway."
Meilani punched Stiles in the arm, purposefully using her enhanced strength in the punch. This caused Stiles to glare at her, but Meilani merely shrugged. "Knock it off. What if the next time we're in bed together and I go wolf on you like I did in the dream?" She stopped walking and looked up at Stiles. "I don't want to hurt you."
"Babe, nothing bad is going to happen I promise. Personally I think you're handling this whole thing pretty amazingly," Stiles said. "I mean it's not like there's a class on Lycanthropy you can take."
"Yeah not a class, but maybe a teacher," Meilani said before turning on her heel and continuing down the hall.
Stiles quickly ran after her. "Derek?! Did you forget the part where we put him in jail?"
"Yeah I know, but, Stiles, chasing after you around the house and grabbing you, attacking you. It all felt so real."
"How real?"
Meilani sighed as she pushed the doors that lead to the back parking lot open. "Like it actually happened."
Stiles halted in his steps as they both made their way outside the doors. One of the doors on the back of the bus was pulled off and the other was dented, blood smeared across the back of it. Inside, there were bloody claw marks all along the roof and there were multiple claw marks and rips in the seats of the bus.
"Maybe it did."
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
A little bit later, Stiles, Scott and Meilani were sat in their science class. Thankfully for this class Meilani and Stiles were partners and Scott was a few tables up with Lydia, much to Scott's dismay because Lydia clearly didn't like him.
"Maybe it was my blood on the door," Meilani whispered to Stiles as she pretended to take down the notes their teacher, Mr. Harris, wrote on the board.
"Maybe it was animal blood on the door. You could have caught a rabbit or something," Stiles suggested.
Meilani froze in her fake writing to look up at Stiles. "And did what with it?"
"Ate it."
"Raw?"
"No you stopped to bake it in a little werewolf oven," Stiles sarcastically remarked. "I don't know! You're the one that can't remember anything."
Harris stopped writing on the board and turned to face the couple. "Mr. Stilinski, if you think that's a whisper then you might wanna take the earphones out every once in a while. Maybe you'll benefit from being separated from Ms. McCall for a while."
Stiles' eyes widened and he glanced over at Scott who was shaking his head at the two. "No.." he replied in a small voice, not wanting to be separated from Meilani, especially now with everything going on.
Meaning business, Harris pointed to two separate seats across the room from each other. "Let me know if the separation anxiety gets too much for you," he taunted, earning a sarcastic laugh from Stiles.
Meilani sat down in the seat that was in front of Jackson's table, next to a pretty dark skinned girl named Nashley. Meilani's seen her in the halls before and Nashley was a pretty cool girl so she didn't mind being partners with her. What she did mind, though, was being stuck in front of Jackson who was currently glaring daggers at her back. Something she tried to ignore as best she could.
Nashley quickly shot out of her seat when she glanced out the window. "Hey, I think they got something!" She announced, rushing over to the window along with the rest of the class.
Outside, three paramedics rolled a gurney out to an ambulance from the surrounding trees of the school.
Meilani gasped and took a step back. She looked over to Stiles who was already looking at her, horror set on his face. She was pretty sure their expressions were matching. "That's not a rabbit."
Outside, the body on the gurney, who everyone could now see was the bus driver, suddenly shot up and started screaming. The whole class jumped back from the window in shock.
Meilani slowly backed away from the window because now she realized that she was the reason that man was going to the hospital. She was the monster who tore him up till he was bloody and in agony.
Stiles, noticing his girlfriend's obvious anxiety peaking, he rushed over to her while the rest of the class continued to watch everything unfold outside. "This is good. He got up, that means he's not dead, Lani. Dead guys can't do that."
"Stiles, I did that!"
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
"But dreams aren't memories," Stiles whispered to Meilani as they sat down at their usual lunch table, waiting for Scott and Allison to show up. Ever since Scott and Allison started getting comfortable with each other, she's been joining their table lately. This usually only gave Stiles and Meilani about three minutes to talk about wolf related incidents before the two showed up.
Meilani still hadn't told Scott about everything and she kept putting it off. If it weren't for him dating the daughter of the hunter who wanted her dead, he would have known the second Stiles and her realized what she was. Scott still thought that Stiles' theory was just that, a theory. He had no idea it was a fact. Meilani made sure to be extra careful around her twin so he wouldn't suspect anything. He was under the impression everything was how it was before that night and Meilani wanted to keep it that way.
"It wasn't a dream! Something happened last night and I can't remember what," Meilani ranted, shoving her bag onto the chair next to her in frustration.
"What makes you so sure Derek knows all the answers?" Stiles questioned. It was obvious he didn't like the idea of Meilani being around the guy and Meilani couldn't necessarily blame him.
"On the full moon, he didn't change and he was in full control. Meanwhile, I was running around like some psychotic monster, killing some innocent guy," Meilani reminded him, huffing.
Stiles sighed and rubbed a hand over his head. "You don't know that!"
"I don't not know that!" Meilani countered. "I can't go out on that triple date. I have to tell Scott and Allison we have a project or something."
"No you can't cancel. You shouldn't cancel your whole life over this," Stiles said, shaking his head. He knew this whole werewolf thing was a lot on Meilani's shoulders but he would be damned if he let her throw her life away over it. "We'll figure it out."
Meilani went to fight back when Lydia appeared next to her, placing her tray down and sitting down next to her. "Figure what out?" She asked, looking between the couple curiously.
Meilani and Stiles exchanged a look, completely confused as to why she was sitting with them. She quickly took a look around just in case there were hidden cameras and this was a prank. Turning her attention back to Lydia, Meilani quickly tried to think of a good lie. "Um, just homework."
Stiles leaned close to Meilani and whispered, "Why is she sitting with us?"
Meilani merely shrugged and her eyes widened when more people sat down at their table. Since when did this many people like her and Stiles? She knew Lydia was okay with Meilani but she couldn't stand Scott or Stiles for whatever reason. Meilani was shocked to even see Danny sitting next to Stiles, the two politely smiling at each other in greeting. Allison and Scott walked over and Meilani removed her bag so Allison could sit next to her. Allison quietly thanked her before plopping down next to her with Scott.
Jackson walked over and ordered for the kid at the head of the table to get up so he could sit with Lydia.
"Why don't you make Danny get up?" The kid asked, gesturing to Danny who was sat across from Lydia.
"Because you don't stare at his girlfriend's assets," Danny retorted and Jackson nodded in agreement.
Rolling his eyes, the kid got up and sat down across from Scott, the only chair left at their table.
"So I heard it was an animal attack," Danny said, breaking the silence that broke out over the table. "Probably a cougar."
"I heard it was a mountain lion," Jackson stated, propping his foot up on the edge of the table.
"A cougar is a mountain lion," Lydia said, causing Jackson to furrow his brows at her. "Isn't it?"
Jackson scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Who cares? The guy is probably some old, homeless guy who is going to die anyways."
Stiles suddenly sat up, his phone in his hand. "Actually, I just found out who it is. Check this out."
"Sheriff's department won't speculate on details of the incident, but confirmed the victim, Garrett Meyers, survived the attack. He was rushed to the local hospital where he remains in critical condition," the male voice-over said over a video of police surveillance of the cops working on the bus.
Meilani quickly snatched the phone from Stiles and he let out a sound of protest. "Wait, I know this guy."
"You do?" Allison asked, looking over Meilani's shoulder to look at the picture of Garett that had popped up in the video.
"Yeah I used to take the bus with Scott when we would stay with my dad after he left. This guy was the bus driver," Meilani explained, staring down at the photo. For the first year or two after their dad walked out, Meilani and Scott stayed at their father's house some nights when Melissa had to work late at the hospital. However, after a while it was like he didn't want to see his children anymore so he moved away without a word. The days that Scott and Meilani had to go to school from his house, Garett would be the one to pick them up and Meilani would sit in the front and talk to him the whole bus ride to school.
Lydia rolled her eyes and twirled her fork around on her tray. "Can we talk about something a little more fun please? Oh, like where are we going tomorrow night?" She asked, looking over at Allison.
Allison glanced over at Scott who shrugged. "Um, we're still trying to figure out what we want to do."
"Well, I am not sitting home watching lacrosse videos again so if we're going to go out then we are doing something fun," Lydia said.
"You know what's fun? Stabbing myself in the face with this fork," Jackson remarked, holding up the fork on his tray.
Stiles rolled his eyes and took a sip from his water bottle to keep his mouth shut from going off on Jackson. He glanced over to Meilani giving her a look that he hoped got across what he was thinking. They shouldn't be going out with Jackson when he was constantly up Meilani's ass about why she was suddenly star player on the lacrosse team.
Lydia suddenly gasped and turned to Jackson. "What about bowling? You love to bowl."
"Hanging out sounds cool. Do you guys bowl?" Allison asked, directing her attention to Meilani and Stiles.
"Um....yeah...sort of..." Meilani trailed off, not knowing how to answer.
Jackson leaned forward, tilting his head at her. "Is it sort of... or yes?"
"Yes," Meilani snapped at him, fed up with him already. "In fact, I'm amazing at bowling.
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
"You suck at bowling!" Stiles exclaimed as he followed Meilani down the stairs after lunch.
Meilani groaned and threw her head back. "I know! I'm so stupid!"
"It was like watching a car wreck. I mean, first we were asked to join this stupid date thing to begin with. I don't even wanna go, babe. I'm only going because of you and Scott. And then comes that phrase!"
"I know! Hang out?" Meilani agreed, slapping her thighs.
"You don't hang out with hot girls. Next thing you know, your brother and I will be the gay best friends!" Stiles ranted, flailing his hands around. "Us and Danny can start hanging out at that point."
"Now I killed a guy or I didn't."
"I don't think Danny likes me very much."
"Now I have to get the both of us through this triple date/hang out thing."
"Am I not attractive to gay guys?"
"I made first line and Jackson wants to destroy me," Meilani groaned as she looked down at her phone and saw the time. "Now I'm late for work and Scott's going to kill me." Without even a word to Stiles, Meilani rushed off towards her bike that was parked on the bike rack.
"Am I attractive to gay - " Stiles stopped mid-sentence when he realized Meilani was already out the door, getting on her bike and pedaling off down the road. "You didn't answer my question."
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
Meilani ran into the animal clinic and waved to Scott and their boss, Deaton. "Hey, sorry I'm late."
"You're only two minutes late, Lan," Deaton chuckled as he shuffled through the box that was left on the counter.
Meilani dropped her bag underneath the counter in the corner of the room where Scott was standing. "I didn't want you guys to think I was slacking."
"Lan, I think you and your brother are the least slacking kids in this town," Deaton said, walking over and placing the big box of medicine behind where Scott and Meilani were stood.
Meilani smiled at Deaton and went to start prepping Deaton's tools he used during check-ups and tests. Scott dug under the cabinets for cleaning supplies and food so he could clean the cages and feed the animals being held at the animal clinic until their owners came back later on for them.
Noah walked into the clinic and greeted Deaton, a big police dog bounding in after him.
"I see someone is ready to get their stitches out," Deaton said to the dog before lifting him onto the lab table in the middle of the room.
Noah removed his sunglasses and walked around the lab table so he could stand on Deaton's side. "Hey, Lan. Hey, Scott. You kids staying out of trouble?"
"We're trying," Scott and Meilani said in unison.
"Oh hey while I'm here, would you mind looking at those pictures I was telling you about?" Noah asked Deaton, holding out a confidential folder to him. "Sacramento still can't identify the animal."
Deaton took the folder from Noah and grabbed the photos from inside. "Well, I'm not an expert but I can try." He looked over the photos provided to him and held up a photo of Garett. "This is the guy that was attacked?"
"Yeah and we found wolf hairs on Laura Hale's body," Noah replied.
Meilani's head snapped up at Noah's statement. "Wolf hairs?" She asked a little too eagerly. All three men stared at Meilani suspiciously. "I mean, I read somewhere that wolves haven't been in California in sixty years." This earned an eyebrow raise from Scott. Meilani forced a smile to seem natural to Scott. She couldn't have Scott start suspecting something was up, not when she was doing so well with keeping up her act.
"True enough, but wolves are highly migratory. They could have came in from another state from impulse, or strong enough memory," Deaton explained, continuing to look over the photos.
Meilani bit her lip as she processed what Deaton had said. "Wolves have memories?" She asked, hoping this could answer her problems with remembering what happened last night.
"Longer term memories, yes. If associated with a primal drive," Deaton answered, turning the picture so Noah and the twins could see. "See here? This is a claw mark. A wolf would have gone for the throat with its teeth."
Noah put his hands on his hips. "So what do you think it is? A mountain lion?"
"I don't know. A wolf could hunt down its prey, hobbling it by tearing at the ankles," Deaton began. This caused Meilani to have a flashback to her tearing at Stiles' ankles in her dream and him crash to the ground. She flinched at the flashback and shook her head to get it out of her head. No. It was just a dream, she would never hurt Stiles. "And then the throat."
Meilani felt her heart rate speed up at the thought of her actually doing this to the poor innocent man. This just proved to her more that she needed to go to Derek and get him to teach her control.
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
"Scott, I doubt this is going to work," Meilani said, following Scott across the parking lot towards the entrance to Beacon Memorial.
Scott turned to his twin and grinned at her over his shoulder. "Trust me. It'll butter her up real good."
"It's your funeral," Meilani mumbled before following Scott into the hospital and over to the nurses' station where Melissa was filling out paper work. She glanced up and placed a hand over her heart when she saw the bag of food in Scott's hand. The twins smiled innocently at Melissa.
"Are my beautiful, talented twins actually bringing me dinner?" Melissa asked, closing the folder to the paperwork she was working on.
"Well, we just thought that - "
" - you were tired of cafeteria food."
"So we brought you some actual food," Meilani finished, knowing fully well this plan wasn't going to work. She just decided to go along with Scott because she knew it would appease him and she didn't want to deal with him complaining to her that she didn't even try.
"You are the most thoughtful, caring, biggest con artists ever. You are so not getting the car tomorrow night," Melissa said.
Meilani slapped Scott in the chest. "Told ya."
"Mom, come on!" Scott protested, giving her the puppy dog eyes that would typically win her over. Not this time.
"Sorry, sweetie, but curfew means no car. I will take this though," Melissa plucked her dinner out of Scott's hands and made her way into the staff room at the end of the hall.
Meilani leaned against the desk and raised an eyebrow at Scott. "Oh don't worry, Mei, everything will work out. We can get the car and drive so we don't have to use Stiles' Jeep. Oh don't worry, Mei, hot food always butters mom up to get the car," She mocked Scott, earning a shove and eye roll from her twin.
"I told you this wasn't going to work. We can just use Stiles' Jeep. It's not that big of a deal," Meilani said, shrugging her shoulders.
Scott sighed and lightly kicked at the desk. "Yeah I guess. I just wanted to impress Allison."
Meilani couldn't help but laugh. "You were gonna impress her with a mom van?"
"Shut up."
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
Meilani made her way through the trees so she stood outside Derek's house. She had waited for the police that were stood outside to drive off before making herself known. She looked up at the house and saw Derek staring at her from the upstairs window. "I know you can hear me. I need your help."
Meilani slowly walked over to the house and up the patio steps as the front door opened. She took a deep breath when Derek was stood in front of her, hands in his leather jacket pockets as he waited for her to speak. "Um, I.... I know I was part of the reason why you were put into jail. We also basically announced you were here to the hunters and I don't even know what happened to your sister."
Derek continued to stare at Meilani letting her continue on her tangent.
"I think I did something last night. I had a dream where someone but someone else got hurt. Turns out part of that dream might have actually happened."
"You think you attacked the bus driver," Derek noted.
"Did you see what I did last night?" Meilani asked.
"No."
"Can you at least tell me the truth?" Meilani huffed, running a hand through her hair. "Am I gonna hurt someone?"
"Yes."
"Can I kill someone?"
"Yes."
"Will I kill someone?"
"Probably."
Meilani groaned, not knowing what to do. Derek basically just told her she was going to turn into a monster and hurt someone the closer the full moon gets. This only just added on to the list of reasons why she needed Derek's help.
"Look, I can help you remember. I can help you control the shifts, even on a full moon. It's not going to come for free," Derek warned.
Meilani scoffed and turned her attention back on Derek instead of the floor. "What do you want?"
"You'll find out," Derek responded vaguely. "But for right now I'll give you what you want. Go back to the bus and go inside, feel it and see it. Let your senses - your sight, smell, touch - remember for you."
"That's it? Just go back?" Meilani questioned, feeling like the whole thing was too easy.
"Do you wanna remember what happened?"
"I just want to know if I hurt him," Meilani responded.
Derek shook his head, giving Meilani a once over. "No you don't. You want to know if you'll hurt him."
Meilani raised her eyes to meet Derek's piercing blue ones. She could tell he was referring to Stiles because of the dream she had and because he probably knew her constant worry about hurting him. Stiles made Meilani's heart go haywire anytime he was around her. He was like a drug to her and she knew that accelerated heart rate was one of the components in causing someone to turn.
Meilani was also nervous to hurt Scott as well, but he didn't make her heart go crazy and he didn't typically piss her off. If anything, he was one of the few people to keep her calm during any situation. She hated to admit it though because Derek was totally right. The only reason she was freaking out and trying to remember what happened, was because she wanted to know if she would ever wind up hurting Stiles.
Stiles was in danger if she couldn't learn to keep control. If she couldn't keep control, Meilani didn't even want to begin to know how real her dream would become.
