JUST TRUST ME

Meilani stood in the foyer with a gaping mouth as Peter continued to smirk at her from his spot on the porch. She forced herself out of her state of shock and quickly moved to shut the door, but Peter was faster and he stuck his hand out to stop the door from closing all the way.Β

Peter gave her a deadpan expression. "Really, Meilani, you're just gonna slam the door in my face? Come on. Take a second to think that through."

"I'll tell her," Meilani threatened, her hands curling into tight fists at her sides.

Peter chuckled softly to himself, stuffing his hands into his black leather jacket. "Oh so you'll tell her that I used to be a catatonic invalid with burns covering half my face? Good luck with that, darling."

Meilani growled as she gave him a sort of look that would probably kill him if looks could do that. "I swear to God, if you hurt her, if you even touch her - "

"Meilani, if I may interrupt your listing of the top five most impotent sounding threats for a moment," Peter cut her off, holding his hand up. "Try and remember that I've been in a coma for six years. Don't you think I'd like to have dinner with a beautiful woman? "

"Just half a second. Sorry," Melissa called as she rushed off into the kitchen, shooting Peter an apologetic smile.

Peter smiled and waved at her - even though Meilani could see right through his nice act - before he turned back to the glaring teen in front of him. "Or maybe... you think that I've come up with an idea. Like how it might be easier to convince you to be part of the pack... if your mother is too."

Meilani felt her heart rate spike at Peter admitting his true intentions for this date. She knew nothing good could come out of this. As Peter slowly walked towards her, Meilani took cautious steps backward and she hated that he could hear how fast her heart was racing. It was written all over his cocky smirk and the dark look in his eyes as he had satisfaction in dangling Melissa in Meilani's face. If she could, Meilani would rip his throat out right now without a second thought.

"You need to understand how much more powerful we are together," Peter whispered so Melissa couldn't hear the conversation since she was only in the next room. "You and me and Derek. Did you know... that some of the most successful military operations during the second world war were the German U-Boat attacks? Do you know what they called them?"

Meilani just continued to glare at him, surprised he continued as if she really cared. They both knew she would never join them, so why was he trying so hard?

"Wolf packs," Peter finished when Meilani didn't make any moves to answer. "Did you know that or are you failing history just like your twin upstairs?"

"Leave Scott and my mother out of this, asshole," Meilani spat and it took all of her willpower not to reach out and punch him. Or worse. "Did you know that the Germans lost the war?"

Peter laughed softly to himself and shrugged. "I think you'll find that most historians would argue that as a failure of leadership. Trust me, we don't have that problem here."

Before Meilani could argue with him, Melissa's heels could be heard from behind them and she stopped next to Meilani with a warm smile.

"So sorry for the wait. I'm ready now," Melissa apologized before turning to her daughter. "I left you and Scott money for dinner okay, sweetheart? Don't wait up either." She kissed Meilani on the forehead before she took Peter's waiting hand and was lead out to Peter's car.

"Shit," Meilani mumbled before she scrambled back up the steps and into her room where Scott was still sat on her bed. "Oh, Scott, you're still here."

Scott nodded and pocketed his phone. "Yeah, we were going to talk remember? What took you so long down there? Mom really took forever, huh?"

"Scott, um... you have no plans right?"

"No, Allison is doing something with Lydia. That's why I'm here to talk to you now," Scott replied and eyed his twin suspiciously as he watched her race across her room. "Are you okay?"

Meilani shoved her arms into her mini backpack and grabbed her jacket and phone. "Fine. Um, wait here and I'll be back in like ten minutes. I forgot something at Stiles' and I'm going to pick it up then we can talk, okay? Promise."

"I can drive you, Mei," Scott offered as he stood up and took the keys out of his hoodie pocket.

Meilani took the keys out of Scott's hand and shook her head. "No, it's fine. Just... please stay here until I come back. I promise I won't be long and then we can, talk. Just please trust me?"

Scott sighed, but eventually nodded in response.

Meilani smiled gratefully at him before she kissed his cheek and rushed out of the room. Once she was sat in her mom's minivan, she dialed Stiles number.

"Babe, are you okay?"

"Stiles, I need you."

"I - we... Lani, my dad is home. We can't - "

Meilani groaned and banged her head lightly on the steering wheel. "No, Stiles. I need your help. I don't want to have sex."

"Aw, really?"

"Stiles!"

"Right, right, sorry. What's wrong? You sound panicked."

Meilani drove as fast as she could, but not fast enough to where she'd get pulled over. Though, she could easily get out of it with not only dating Stiles, but Noah always seeing her as his daughter before the two ever got together. "My mom has a date with Peter Hale tonight."

"WHAT? Why? How?"

"I don't know, but he showed up at my house to pick her up," Meilani answered as she continued to try and find her mom's scent. "Can you meet me and then accidentally on purpose slam into the back of Peter's car?"

Stiles groaned on the other end. "Babe, why do you keep wanting to hurt my Jeep?"

"Stiles!"

"Fine, okay. Just let me know where they are and I'll do it."

"Thank you!" Meilani huffed and perked up when she caught her mom and Peter's scents. "I love you and I'll send you the location."

Meilani wasn't sure what she expected, but when Stiles lightly bumped into the back of Peter's car about ten minutes later, it was a lot better than she had hoped. Melissa just got out of the car and yelled at Stiles for being so careless. Stiles, of course, couldn't exactly defend himself since Peter was parked.

"Nice work, Meilani," Peter whispered, but knew Meilani could hear him form her hiding spot behind a car a few feet away. She peeked around the front of the car and glared at Peter even though she was pretty sure he couldn't see her. "Nicely done. I know you're there, Meilani, and I'm impressed. It's too bad most teenagers aren't that smart. It's like that one on the lacrosse team... Jackson. Thinks he knows all about us. You know how they say knowledge is power. Not in his case."

Meilani gripped the front bumper as an odd sense of worry over Jackson took over. "Jackson... oh, no."

Meilani walked around the Hale house as she tried to find any sort of sign of Derek and Jackson. She didn't hear or smell them so the rational part of her was yelling at her that neither one of them were here just yet. The other part still lead her around the upstairs of the house, expecting at least someone to be there.

However, her ears perked up when she heard the front door opening with Jackson and Derek's voices following. She walked back over to the hallway and hid just by the stairs so she wouldn't be seen.

"I don't deserve it!" Jackson cried as he sat frozen on the steps in fright and Derek neared him with his claws exposed.

"I think you do," Derek snapped at him. "Don't you think someone would have been here to save you? That's the point. No one cares that you drive an expensive car. No one cares that you're captain of the lacrosse team."

Meilani stepped out from the shadows and stood at the top of the stairs. "Co-captain."

Jackson's head whipped around to look up at her and he almost looked relieved to see her.

Meilani jumped from the top of the steps and landed on the bottom, a few feet from Derek in her wolf form and she growled at him. She could hear Jackson's heart spike in fear and she turned to look at him with as soft a look as she could while looking like a hairy monster. When his heart rate settled slightly, Meilani turned back to Derek.

"Move," Derek ordered, now also in his full wolf form.

"No."

"Fine. I'll kill you too."

Before either one of them cold move, a whizzing sounded was heard from outside the house. Derek's eyes widened and he tackled Meilani to the ground while yelling at Jackson to duck and cover his head.

Meilani gasped when she rolled over and an arrow shot right into her stomach, blood immediately spilling from her mouth. She grunted in pain as she held her fingers around the wound.Β

"Meilani, run!" Derek yelled as he helped the quickly weakening girl to her feet and pushed her out the back door of the house.

Meilani gasped and wheezed as she more stumbled than ran across the woods to try and get back to her house as quickly as she could. She could just sneak back in the house and into the downstairs bathroom to use the first aid kit before going up to her twin. It would all work out and they would make amends finally.Β

The harder she pushed herself, the more worn out she got and, eventually, she collapsed to the ground and rolled onto her back, black quickly forming around the edges of her vision. She closed her eyes and took a shaky breath. Her mouth instantly drying and the world going in and out of focus.

Before her whole world went black, she saw a blurry face appear in her line of vision before the darkness finally took over.

Meilani took in a sharp breath when her eyes snapped open, but was pushed gently back down. She looked up to see her boss, Deaton, stood above her with a blue sanitary gloves and pliers in his hand.Β

"I wouldn't get up just yet, Meilani."

Meilani laid her head back down on the table that usually held the animals that came into the clinic during their check ups. "Where am I..."

"You're fine," Deaton assured, placing the pliers down and taking a cleaning pad to sanitize Meilani's arrow wound. "I gave you something that should speed up the healing process."

Meilani's vision went between focus and unfocused so much that it was giving her a migraine. It seemed to be better than it was earlier though. She just wasn't sure how Deaton knew how to treat her since he was an animal doctor. Granted, she was part wolf now, but still. "But you're a vet."

"That's very true. Ninety percent of the time, I'm mostly treating cats and dogs."

"Mostly?"

"Mostly."

Not having the energy to question Deaton's ominous response, Meilani just flopped back on the table beneath her and relaxed. Deciding to just let whatever Deaton gave her to work its way through her so she could get back to Scott. It was bad enough he wanted to make up and she had to lie, but now she was way longer than she had anticipated and he was probably losing his mind.

So much for her life finally starting to fall back into place.
