CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
THE FULL MOON

Once the school day ended, Meilani made her way over to the girl's locker room to get dressed for practice. She hoped that practice would help keep her mind off the fact that not only was her brother upset with her but it was also a full moon. It would be her first one ever since getting attacked in the woods that night with Stiles and Scott. Meilani wasn't exactly sure what would happen to her tonight since Derek hadn't told her anything about full moons. Something told her it was going to be a long night, though.
Meilani quickly put her lacrosse uniform on and grabbed her stick and helmet before she walked out of the girl's locker room. She walked over to the boy's locker room and knocked to make sure all the boys were dressed and ready. Coach Finstock liked to have his meetings with the team before any practice and game in the boy's locker room. It didn't really bother Meilani that much so long as all the boys were dressed before she walked in there.
Scott opened the door for her and stepped back so she could walk in. He closed the door once she was in and went to the other side of the locker room, the furthest away from her. Meilani frowned at him but he just ignored her and turned his back to her and began to talk to one of the kids on the team.
"Are you doing okay?" Stiles questioned once Meilani sat down next to him on the bench.
Meilani glanced up at Stiles and hated the concerned expression he had on. She hated the fact that Stiles was constantly worrying about her because of everything going on. So much had changed in the short month of her being turned and it slowly ate away at Meilani. "As good as I can be right now, I guess. I don't feel like ripping anybody's head off right now, which I think is a good sign."
"We'll figure everything out, Lani, I promise," Stiles assured Meilani, pulling her into his side and kissing the side of her head.
The couple were quiet for a few minutes until Coach Finstock walked out of his office, a clipboard in his hand. "Okay, everybody, listen up. Due to the pink eye epidemic - thank you, Greenberg - the following people have made first line on a probationary basis, emphasis on the probationary," he announced and glanced down at the clipboard to read off the names.
Stiles gave Meilani a hopeful smile, hoping he would be one of the names called. Meilani pat his knee in response and listened to the names that Coach called out.
"Rodriquez, Taylor, and uh..." Coach trailed off, bringing the clipboard closer to his face and scrunched his eyebrows together as he tried to read the last name on the clipboard. "Oh for the love of crap. I can't even read my own writing!"
Stiles squirmed on the bench next to Meilani as the possibility of his name being called was right there. Why couldn't Coach Finstock just say the damn name already? Meilani thought if Stiles waited any longer that he would just combust from the anticipation.
"Is that a S?" Coach asked as he continued to mumble to himself, which only made Stiles get more excited because his name began with a S. "No that's not a S that's a... B. That's definitely a B. Rodriquez, Taylor and... uh... Bilinski."
Stiles' eyes widened as his name - even though said wrong - was called. He jumped off the bench and cheered, throwing his hands in the air. The whole locker room looked at Stiles as if he had gone crazy. Meilani was the only one who clapped for her boyfriend because she knew how badly he wanted to be on first line. Lacrosse was Stiles' whole life - besides Meilani of course - and the fact that he would get to be on first line meant the world to him. He really did deserve the chance.
"Bilinski!" Coach yelled which immediately stopped Stiles' celebration. "Shut up."
"Yes, sir," Stiles sheepishly replied and slowly sat back down on the bench next to Meilani.
"Stiles..." Meilani said but jumped back slightly when Stiles turned to her with an intense look.
"Call me Biles or I swear to God I'll kill you," Stiles warned. Meilani merely rolled her eyes at her boyfriend's antics. Sometimes she worried about him.
Coach Finstock brought the clipboard back down to his side. "Also, starting today we are changing co-captains. Congratulations, McCall."
Scott and Meilani glanced at each other, not really knowing which one Coach Finstock had been referring to. Meilani had a hunch it was her since Scott wasn't on Coach Finstock's favorite person's list. Coach quickly corrected himself and confirmed that it was in fact Meilani.
Jackson's eyes widened and did not look too happy that she was going to be co-captain now. "What? You can't be serious, Coach."
"What do you mean what?" Coach Finstock mocked and looked over at Jackson who looked he wanted to fight the man right then and there. "This takes nothing away from you. This is about combining separate strengths into one unit. This is about taking your unit and McCall's unit - we're making one big unit."
After Coach Finstock wrapped up the speech, he ushered everyone out onto the field to get ready. Meilani sighed and grabbed her stuff before she began to walk towards the field. She was excited that she got to be a co-captain but she wasn't exactly too excited over who her co-captain had to be. Jackson and her did not see eye to eye whatsoever so she didn't see this going too well.
"Babe, can you believe this?" Stiles asked as he ran to catch up with his girlfriend. "You're captain, I'm first line. I'm first freaking line!"
Meilani pushed the door open to exit the locker room with Stiles right on her trail. "That's great, Sti."
Stiles pushed Meilani's helmet onto her head and gave her a look. "Are you not freaking out about this? I'm freaking out!"
"What's the point? It's just a stupid title," Meilani countered and fixed her helmet so it sat better on her head. "I can practically smell the jealousy in there. As if Scott didn't hate me enough already, I got the position he's always wanted besides first line. Now I have both."
Stiles put a hand on Meilani's chest to stop her from continuing down the hall to the field. "Wait, you smelt jealousy?"
Meilani shrugged and nodded. "Yeah, I guess the full moon elevates everything to a ten." She turned to continue walking but stopped when she saw Allison stood at the end of the hall talking to Lydia. Meilani chewed on her lip as she thought about whether talking to Allison about Scott would be a good idea. She needed to make sure that even though he wasn't talking to her, that their relationship hadn't completely gone to shit.
"Sti, I'll meet you on the field okay? I want to talk to Allison really quick," Meilani said.
"Going to see if Scott still hates you?" Stiles questioned even though he already knew the answer. "Going to use your newly maximized sense of smell to see if she's lying or not when she says it?"
"Yes, just go out there before Coach has a panic attack. Just make something up about why I didn't come out yet."
Stiles mockingly saluted her and walked off to go to the field.
Meilani took a deep breath before she walked up to Allison. "Hey, Allison. Can I talk to you really quick? Do you mind, Lydia?"
"Nope, I have to go get Allison and I good seats out there anyway," Lydia replied before she turned on her heels and walking away.
Allison smiled at Meilani. "What's up? Congrats on the co-captain thing, by the way. I heard the guys talking about it as they passed by Lydia and I to get outside."
"Oh, um, thanks," Meilani mumbled and scratched the back of her neck. "Do you think Scott and I's relationship is completely ruined? It seemed like the whole co-captain thing made the situation worse because he looked more annoyed than before."
"No, I don't think it's completely ruined. I'm sure he will get over what happened eventually. I think he's mainly upset because you're keeping stuff from him. You never really explained what happened at the school the other day which is confusing all of us," Allison explained. "I think you should talk to Scott and not me. Maybe if you two actually talked it would make things better."
"McCall, get out here!" Coach Finstock yelled from the double doors behind Allison that lead to the field. "You got a scrimmage to play!"
Allison turned to look at Coach before looking back towards Meilani. "Just think about what's more important to you. Your brother or whatever you are keeping from him."
Meilani walked around Allison and made her way back out to the field. The talk with Allison did not help make her feel better at all. If anything, it made her feel even more frustrated. She walked over to the bench and plopped down next to Stiles.
"What did Allison say?" Stiles asked as he finished tightening up his shoelaces.
"Nothing... it doesn't matter anymore," Meilani grumbled. She tossed her bag to the floor, ignored her rapidly beating heart and walked onto the field. Meilani just wanted to get this day over with.
βΎβ½βΎβ½βΎ
Later that night, Meilani sat on her chair in the corner of the room. Stiles had texted her that he would be coming over soon but she just ignored it. There was a lot of anger that stirred around inside of her that she couldn't control. Part of her was trying to fight it off but the wolf side of her won that fight. Meilani felt like she was in some sort of out of body experience and no matter how hard she fought, she couldn't get it to stop. Stupid full moons.
Suddenly, her door opened to reveal Stiles. He jumped when he saw her in the corner of the room, just staring blankly at the door. "Oh God. You scared me, babe. Your mom said you weren't home yet."
Meilani watched as Stiles dropped the duffle bag he brought with him in front of her. She slowly raised her eyes to look back up at him. "I came in through the window."
"Okay.... Well, uh, let's get this set up," Stiles said and squatted down in front of the duffle bag, opening it up. "Wait till you see what I bought."
"I'm fine," Meilani monotonously interrupted Stiles. She had this eery presence to her that Stiles didn't like. She reminded him of a mafia boss that had little to no emotions left in them and they were just a shell of a human. "I'm just going to lock the door and go to bed early tonight."
Stiles dropped whatever was in his hand into the duffle and warrily looked at his girlfriend. "You sure about that, Lani? You have this kind of serial killer look in your eyes right now. I'm really hoping it's the full moon starting to take effect because it's starting to freak me out."
"I'm fine, Stiles," Meilani continued to use the same montone voice that she had since Stiles arrived. She wasn't acting or talking like the girl Stiles knew which upped his anxiety another ten levels. "You should just go now."
Stiles deflated slightly and tried not to take whatever Meilani was saying to heart because he knew this wasn't Meilani he talked to. This was some possessed, angry wolf version of Meilani that spoke to him. If she wanted her space, he would just give it to her because he didn't want to know what would happen if he tried to stay here with her. "Um... yeah... okay. I'll just go. Can you at least look in the bag and see what I bought? Maybe you use it, maybe you don't. Sound good?"
Meilani slowly pushed herself up from the chair and walked over to the duffle bag. She knelt down in front of it and reached inside the open bag. Meilani's hand touched something cold and she brought her hand out to reveal chains. Her eyes slowly moved to lock with Stiles', but her head didn't move so she looked even more intimidating than she already had. "You think I'm going to let you put these on and chain me up like a dog?"
"Actually, no," Stiles replied. Quickly, Stiles reached behind him and grabbed Meilani's hand with the other. Before Meilani knew it, she was handcuffed to her radiator underneath the window.
"What the hell are you doing!" Meilani yelled as she tried to yank her wrist out of the handcuffs, but it was no use. The damned things would not come off no matter how many times or how hard she tugged. The wolf inside of her tried to claw its way out of her. "Are you crazy?!"
Stiles looked down at Meilani and shook his head. "I'm only protecting you from yourself, Meilani. I don't need to see you hurting yourself or anyone else tonight, especially Scott."
"I'm going to kill you," Meilni growled as she tried again to get out of her retraints and grew even more frustrated when they still didn't budge.
"That's exactly what I'm talking about, Meilani!" Stiles snapped, slapping his hands to his side. "For the past three hours, I have been worrying about you and how you were doing. You couldn't even give me the time of day today. After practice, you rammed two guys and then hit Danny in the head with your lacrosse stick. Danny of all people, one of the few guys who actually supported you when you came to the team because you were actually a really good player whether you were a girl or not. You wouldn't even let me talk to you after that happened either and I was just trying to help you. I keep thinking to myself that this is just the full moon talking. That you will be back to normal tomorrow and not this twisted person you're acting like right now. This horrible sister and girlfriend. This isn't you."
Meilani darkly stared up at Stiles. "I'm a horrible girlfriend? What's so great about you, Stiles? You're the reason this happened to me in the first place!" She yelled and Stiles shook his head and walked out of the room. That didn't stop Meilani from continuing, however. "If it wasn't for you and your stupid desire to find the body in the woods that night, I wouldn't be losing my brother or my sanity right now! This is all because of you, Stiles Stilinski!"
Meilani continued to pull and tug on the handcuffs, desperately trying to get loose. A chord suddenly snapped in her and she was able to push through the wolf and get herself back into her body. She tried to ignore the stinging of her wrist that was now red and bloody from all the friction being rubbed against it. "Babe, please this isn't me okay? This is the full moon talking. It's not like the first time because it's more than that. Scott hates me. He fucking hates me. I know this isn't just him being pissed at me, he's acting like I don't exist. He doesn't want to act like we're related anymore. It's killing me because my best friend wants nothing to do with me, Stiles. It hurts. Please, please let me out, Sti. Please."
"I can't... I'm sorry," Stiles whispered and covered his ears to block out whatever else Meilani said. He couldn't let her go, he just couldnt. He didn't want her hurting anyone else or more importantly, herself. He had to be strong and keep her chained up until the moon went away and she was okay again.
The cloud that covered the full moon outside slowly started to drift away, revealing the moon's light. Meilani desperately tried to push herself away from the moon's light but it was no use because her damn wrist was trapped to the radiator. As the moon light hit her, that's when she lost control of her body again and the wolf side took over. She arched her back and screamed as the transformation slowly started to take over her.
βΎβ½βΎβ½βΎ
Meilani blindly ran through the woods, following whatever her wolf instincts told her. She found herself standing outside Allison's house, just inside the lining of the trees. She could see Allison and Scott sat on Allison's windowsill as they talked to each other. Meilani wasn't sure if it was the full moon talking or not but from what she heard, Scott badmouthed her and talked about how he wasn't sure he could ever forgive her for what she had been doing. That Meilani had gone too far with lies and he didn't know if he could trust her. This only fueled and sparked her wolf more and made her livid.
When Meilani went to run out of the protection of the trees to attack her brother and Allison for even talking about her behind her back, she was flung backwards into the woods. She rolled and stood up to see Derek standing in front of her and he did not look too pleased with her. Growling, Meilani rushed forward to attack Derek but he was too quick and he quickly countered each and every attack she tried to bestow upon him.
Meilani was finally flung up against a tree when she seemed to snap out of whatever rage she was in. She looked down to see her claws instead of her fingers and felt the tickling of the hairs on her face. "What's happening to me?"
"Exactly what he wants to happen," Derek answered, now changed back into his human form. He walked over to Meilani and squatted down in front of her. "I'm going to walk you back to your house but I need you to turn back first. I can't be walking around town with you looking like that, especially not with the Argents around."
It took a while but Meilani finally calmed down enough to change back and Derek wrapped one of Meilani's arms around his shoulder to help her walk back to the house since she was pretty weak. They walked back to her house in silence and once they got to her room, Derek helped her sit down on the bed.
Meilani shrugged off her hoodie since she still felt a little warm from her wolf counterpart and was sweating slightly. "I can't do this. I can't be this... and also be around my brother or even Stiles. I need you to tell me the truth, Derek. Is there a cure?"
Derek was quiet for a long moment as he stared down Meilani. It seemed like he had an inner battle with himself whether he should tell Meilani what she wanted to know. "For someone who is bitten, I've heard of one, but I don't know if it's true."
"Well, what is it?" Meilani questioned and jumped up from her spot on the bed. "Tell me, Derek, please."
"You have to kill the one that bit you," Derek responded.
Meilani's eyes nearly buldged out of her head when she heard the response. How in the Hell was she supposed to pull that one off? "Kill the alpha?"
"Meilani," Derek stated and stepped closer to her. "If you help me find him, I'll help you kill him."
