CHAPTER ELEVEN

SIDEKICKS GET THE BEST LINES

Meilani groaned as Stiles continued to trail behind her. He had been trying to talk to her throughout the class, but she honestly didn't want to talk to him about whatever it was. She had no information for him and having to admit it out loud would only make her even more annoyed. No one need a rogue werewolf running around right now. 

"Stiles, I told you I'm not talking about this right now."

Stiles sighed and gently grabbed his girlfriend's wrist before she could enter the cafeteria to go to lunch. He dragged her over to an empty corner of the hallway and leaned her against the wall. "Babe, you have to know what's happening right? I mean, Lydia is MIA, Jackson looks like he has a time-bomb inserted into his face, there's dead guys popping up. You have to do something or know something!"

Meilani huffed and ran a hand through her hair, something she found herself doing way more than usual lately. "Stiles, I don't know what you want me to do. Derek is no help. I'm still trying to figure this freaking wolf thing out. There's a full moon coming up and I'll probably wind up killing someone because of it. I don't even know where to begin to figure this whole thing out."

"Well, what if we go visit Lydia after school? That would help right?" Stiles asked, scratching the back of his neck. "I mean, maybe we can find out what she saw."

"Yeah, but Allison mentioned that Lydia was on medication. What if she's all loopy? We wouldn't be able to tell if she was speaking the truth or not," Meilani argued, chewing her bottom lip. "What if it doesn't help?"

"Doesn't hurt to try right? We can be like Sherlock and John!" Stiles beamed, making it hard for Meilani to even think about turning him down when he looked as adorable as he did.

Meilani broke out into a grin and giggled at her boyfriend's dorkiness. "I get to be Sherlock. It is a girl's name after all."

"Why do I always have to be the sidekick?" Stiles groaned, stamping his foot like a two year old throwing a tantrum.

"The sidekicks always get the best lines," Meilani reminded him and kissed him on the cheek before making her way into the cafeteria.

A few hours later, Meilani and Stiles made their way to Lydia's house. Meilani had called Melissa earlier to let her know she might be a little late coming home, but she would be home in time to go with her to the parent/teacher meeting. She still prayed to herself that Scott would make it back from his spontaneous cutting of school to make it for the meeting or he will surely be grounded for life.

Meilani followed Stiles out of the car and over to the front door where Mrs. Martin greeted them with a warm smile. She mentioned that she was glad that Lydia had such good friends to want to come check on her after what happened. Little did she know, Lydia wasn't exactly friends with either one of them. Meilani didn't have the heart to tell Mrs. Martin that though. 

"Lydia," Mrs. Martin softly called as she opened the door to her daughter's bedroom. Lydia was laid on her bed, head laid on her hand and flipping her hand back at forth. She was staring at it as if it was the most fascinating thing in the world. "Meilani and Stiles are here to see you."

"What the Hell  is a Stiles?" Lydia questioned as she continued her twirling of the hand.

Stiles made a sound as if he were offended and Mrs. Martin gave him an apologetic smile. "She took something to ease her nerves a little. You can go in, guys."

"Thanks," Meilani said, smiling politely at Mrs. Martin as she stepped into the room with Stiles. "Hey, Lydia. How are you doing?"

Lydia inspected her fingernails and scoffed softly. "You actually care? Why?"

"Yeah, of course we are worried about you," Stiles added, nodding enthusiastically. "So, again, how are you feeling, Lydia?"

Lydia leaned forward and smiled drunkenly at the couple next to her bed. "I feel fantastic."

Stiles glanced over at the pill bottle next to her bed and smirked. Those would make anyone act like they were drunk and loopy. "I bet you can't say 'I saw Suzy sitting in a shoeshine shop' ten times fast."

Lydia stared down Stiles as if she were challenging Stiles with her eyes. Meilani bit her lip to keep herself from laughing because she knew Lydia was about to fail terribly at this. She could barely say that three times fast and she was sober, while Lydia was drugged. "I shaw Suzy - I saw Shuzy..." She seemed to trail off and stare ahead of her, a slight frightened look appearing on her face. "I saw..."

Meilani walked over to Lydia and sat down on the bed. "Lydia, what did you see?"

"Something..." Lydia distractedly replied.

Stiles crouched in front of Lydia, glancing up at Meilani who shared the same look as him. "Saw what? Something like... a mountain lion?"

"A mountain lion," Lydia agreed, nodding her head.

"Are you sure it was a mountain lion or are you just saying that because that's what the police told you?" Stiles questioned.

"A mountain lion," Lydia repeated, looking up at Stiles.

Stiles sighed and grabbed the stuffed giraffe next to him on the bedside table. "What's this?" 

Lydia gave Stiles a look as if he were stupid. "A mountain lion." She then collapsed onto her bed, falling asleep from the medication.

Stiles rolled his eyes and tossed the stuffed animal back onto the table. "Glad to see you're better, Lydia. We'll see you at school." He pat her on the head before he got to his feet. Stiles was about to grab Meilani's hand when Lydia's phone went off. He checked it in case it was something important for Lydia to know. He clicked on the message and his eyes widened at the video sent to her.

"Lani, that animal was no mountain lion."

☾ ☽☾ ☽☾ 

Meilani sat in Stiles' room as he paced back and forth. "Stiles, you're giving me anxiety just watching you do that."

Stiles groaned and rubbed his hands over his face feverishly. "I don't know what to do about this, Lani. What if thing tries to hurt you? You don't know how to fight or control your wolf abilities yet."

"You're not the one that would probably have to face it, Stiles. We just have to sit down when I get back from this parent/teacher thing at school and figure it out, okay?" Meilani said as she stood up and placed her hand on Stiles' arm to stop him from pacing.

Stiles stared down at Meilani's face and Meilani couldn't stop her heart from breaking at the worried expression displayed on it. "Lani, if something were to happen to you... I don't..."

Meilani placed a hand on his cheek and stroked it softly. "I'm not going anywhere you big dope. You're stuck with me for the rest of time."

Stiles smiled softly as he placed his hands on her hips. "I guess I can live with that," he whispered before he kissed her softly on the lips, Meilani's arms instantly wrapped around his neck.

Noah clearing his throat broke the two apart as they turned to face him. "Try to reign in your teenage hormones would ya?" He stated, leaning against Stiles' doorframe. "Please tell me this parent/teacher thing will go smoothly and I won't have to kill you."

"Depends on how you define good news," Stiles responded, releasing Meilani's hips from his grasp.

"I define it as you getting straight A's with no behavioral issues," Noah explained.

Stiles chuckled nervously as he scratched the back of his neck. "Might wanna rethink that definition?"

Noah merely sighed before he turned to Meilani. "Come with me, Lans. I told your mother you were here and that I'd take you to the school to meet her."

"Yes, sir," Meilani said before she grabbed her stuff and kissed Stiles goodbye. "I'll come back later. Promise."

Stiles forced a smile as he watched Meilani follow Noah out of the room. This whole thing was becoming one giant mess and he wasn't sure how him and Meilani were going to clean it up.

☾ ☽☾ ☽☾

Meilani sat next to her mom in front of the twin's chemistry teacher, Mr. Harris. Melissa was on the phone leaving Scott his third voicemail since she arrived in the room. They had been sitting there in the room for the past fifteen minutes waiting for him and Meilani was about thirty seconds from using her wolf senses to hunt him down and rip his head off. He promised her he would be there for the meeting so he could prove to their mom he wanted to try and make this year better. Right now he was showing his mom - and now Meilani - how little he cared. 

She wished she stopped him from cutting school with Allison because then she wouldn't be in this awkward situation. The fact that she was the smarter and more responsible twin was once again being proven and she hated it. Meilani hated that everyone viewed her as the superior twin because she was just a little smarter than Scott and actually tried more in both being social and in just life in general. Just because Scott didn't necessarily do well in school didn't make him a bad nor mean other people should say Meilani was better for it.

"How about we just get started?" Mr. Harris suggested.

Melissa offered him an apologetic smile. "Yeah, good idea. I'm sure he'll be here soon."

Meilani silently scoffed to herself and crossed her arms, leaning back in her seat. If she knew Scott was just going to blow this whole thing off, she would have stayed back at Stiles' and did research with him. To her that was more important right now so she could track it down and hopefully get Derek to help for point five seconds and kill it. Not sit here when her grades were perfectly fine and her brother's were the low ones. She just wanted to support him like she has done her whole life and he just threw that back in her face by not even showing up.

"Well, as everyone knows, Meilani is an excellent student," Mr. Harris began, glancing at Meilani who looked uncomfortable being put on the spot like that. It was obvious he was going to talk Meilani up more than usual to make Scott look even worse. Mr. Harris had an obvious hatred for her twin. "She gets straight A's on all my tests she always tries hard during class time on the experiments."

Here we go, Meilani thought to herself, sinking even further in her seat as Mr. Harris looked down to his folder on Scott.

"Lately, it's as if Scott's mind is somewhere else - as is his body. Personally I think it would have something to do with his home situation."

Meilani furrowed her brows as she stared at Mr. Harris. Home situation? What in the holy Hell was he talking about? He couldn't possibly be referencing their absent father? Would Harris even know about that?

"I'm not sure what you mean about 'home situation'."

"Specifically, lack of an authority figure," Mr. Harris elaborated.

"I'm the authority figure so..." Melissa trailed off, waiting for Mr. Harris to make a comment about her parenting skills or her being a single mother.

Mr. Harris chuckled awkwardly. "Um, let me clarify. I mean, lack of a male authority figure."

Meilani scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Trust me, we'd be much worse if he was in the picture."

"Well, does your brother feel the same way?" Mr. Harris inquired, raising an eyebrow at her.

"I know my twin better than anyone. He hates him just as much as I do, if not more. He left our mom when she needed him the most. He's dead to all three of us," Meilani snapped.

Melissa elbowed Meilani, signaling her to knock it off because it was a teacher she was talking to, but she didn't give less of a fuck. No one was allowed to question her or Scott's feelings on their dad walking out. Mr. Harris would never understand what they went through when their mom had to explain to them that their dad would no longer be coming home. Sometimes Meilani wished he had died instead of walking out, at least that pain would slowly ease away. This pain  would continue because he was alive and he just wasn't there because he didn't even care about them anymore. That hurt a lot worse.

"Scott is going through a lot of difficult changes. He just needs some extra attention during this crucial stage of his development."

After a few minutes of Mr. Harris going back and forth between speaking about the twins, Melissa and Meilani left the classroom and made their way out of the school. 

Meilani grabbed her phone and quickly dialed Scott before Melissa could. "Scott, I swear to God, if you don't answer my call I will make whatever punishment Mom gives to you sound like freaking Heaven. Call me back."

A few feet away from her, she noticed Allison's parents walk out of the building and Chris Argent yell into his phone at Allison's voicemail. They must have found out she cut class with Scott from one of the teachers. Melissa must have heard him as well - though Meilani was sure the whole school parking lot heard him - and made her way over. Meilani rushed after her to try and stop her. No way was she letting Melissa talk to the man that wanted her dead, even if Scott was currently with their daughter.

"Hi, excuse me," Melissa said as she approached Chris and his wife. "You're not Allison's parents are you? I'm Scott's mom and I hate to say it, but he's not answering his phone either."

"You're Scott and Meilani's mother?" Chris questioned with a look of disgust, especially as his eyes landed on the aforementioned girl behind Melissa.

Meilani gave him a hard glare behind her mom's back and half thought about giving him the finger but refrained from doing so. No need to make her already drastic situation even worse by pissing off the guy that wanted to put a silver bullet in her heart.

"Funny how you say that like it's an accusation," Melissa says defensively.

"I wouldn't say it with a sense of pride since he practically kidnapped my daughter today," Chris argued.

Meilani went to open her mouth and defend her brother, even though he really did kidnap her. However, she wasn't going to let Chris bad talk her twin in front of her and let him get away with it. She couldn't fight a teacher who bad mouthed Scott, but she'll be damned if she couldn't fight this asshole who was trying to kill her anyways. 

Melissa quickly put a stop to it and no matter how many times Melissa did it, it would always freak Meilani out. She didn't even have to look at the twins to know what they were about to do. She wondered if it was a mom thing. "How do you know it wasn't your daughter who did the kidnapping?"

"My daughter..." Chris trailed off, looking to the side a bit. 

Meilani turned and followed his line of sight to see Scott and Allison exit Allison's car. She shot daggers in Scott's direction hoping their twin telepathy would kick in and it would make him feel even more guilty that she was now annoyed with him too. Not just Melissa. 

"Is right there."

Meilani rushed down the steps and over to her twin and Allison before the three parents could make their way over. "I am going to gut you like a fish."

"Nice to see you too, Mei," Scott teased only to be punched hard in the arm by Meilani. Thanks to her newly found wolf strength, her punch was definitely a lot more brutal. "Ow."

Scott was saved from any more of Meilani's wrath as Melissa approached. "Just where have you been, Scott McCall?"

"Nowhere, Mom," Scott groaned.

"Nowhere meaning not at school," Melissa scolded, pointing at him and Allison.

Allison bit her lip as she glanced from Scott to Melissa. "Mrs. McCall, don't be mad at Scott. It was all my fault. Honest. It's my birthday and -"

"Allison," Chris cut off Allison's half-assed lie. "In the car."

Before Allison could protest, a loud growl echoed across the parking lot. People immediately started to scream and rush around the parking lot, trying to escape whatever was going on. People were tripping over each other to get to their vehicles to either hide or high tail it out of the lot. 

Hearing another growl come from the right, Meilani turned and rushed in that direction, ignoring the calls of her twin for her to come back because it wasn't safe. She froze in the middle of the lot to try and see if she could stalk this thing out. Finally, she was going to catch what attacked the video store. She could report to Stiles that everything was okay and they can cross one thing off their never ending list of things to work on. 

Her wolf eyes helped her to follow the path that the creature was running in so she followed him as best as she could. She noticed Noah rush around and got people to stay back as he tried to catch the creature. He was stopped when someone backed up into him and he fell to the ground. Someone close by rushed over to help him even though he assured everyone he was okay.

As she rushed over to where Noah was, she noticed Allison stood in the middle of the lot and a car rush towards her. "Allison!" She called before she ran over and pushed the girl out of the way just before the car zoomed past to escape the chaotic scene around them. "You okay?"

Allison silently nodded as a gun shot was heard. Both girls turned to see that Chris lower his hand. Scott was suddenly beside both girls to see if they were okay after almost being run over by the car. Once they assured him they were okay, Meilani lead the way over to where Mr. Argent was. The crowd in the parking lot closed in around him to see a dead mountain lion in the parking lot.

Meilani huffed in defeat as she stared down at the lion in front of her. This was not the creature in the video Stiles showed her on Lydia's phone. This was actually just a mountain lion that had escaped the woods and ran amok in the school parking lot. They still had yet to find and capture the actual creature behind the attack. 

Why couldn't things just ever be placed in Meilani's hands?

I know it's been like a month since I updated this but I promise it's here now. I'm sorry it took so long. I honestly don't even know why it took me this long. On the brightside, I found a new website to watch the episodes on because the other one kept cracking out, so episodes will be written faster YES!!! Going to try and get another update out for you guys since it's been a month. I will definitely try on Friday when I'm home.

WE'RE GETTING CLOSER TO WHERE SCOTT FINDS OUT SHE'S A WOLF AND OMG I'M LIVING FOR IT !!!!! Cause once that happens, Scott can finally be in this a lot more because he'll be able to join in on the researching and kicking ass once he gets over the fact that Meilani can fucking morph into a wolf. SO YEAH IT'S GON BE LIT FAM!
