Prologue
It was a beautiful day outside. Birds singing, sun shining and the beautiful sound of the nearby stream. Kitzy jumped out of bed and brushed her hair, wanting to go outside to run around with Hank. Hank and Kitzy had been bestfriends since like, Day one! They loved to run around outside together in the woods and play pretend, as if they were real warriors in the apocalypse. Running downstairs, Kitzy grabbed a pancake her family had made, taking it off of the counter. "Ma! I'm headed out to play with Hank!" Kitzy called out, her mother smiling as she watched her little girl run out the back door.
She sighed with a smile as Kitzy ran off through the yard. That girl was so sweet. "Nothing can come between her and Hank, can it?" Her mother said, speaking to herself as Kitzy disappeared into the underbrush. Hank lived in the neighborhood behind them so when Kitzy wanted to see him, she would just jump out the door or the window and run on over through the woods.
Kitzy jumped over the fallen trees and little animal dens as she ran through the woods, quickly entering Hank's backyard. She swiftly ran over to his window and grabbed the rope the two had placed there so she could get in. Reaching the window she noticed Hank was still soundly sleeping. Not for long though. Kitzy quietly opened the window and crawled into his room, sneaking up onto the bed. "Haaank.." she whispered, gently nudging him, causing Hank to groan "mmnhh.. five more minutes mom.." he whined, pulling the covers over his face. Kitzy pouted and then jumped on top of him "Hank!" Hank let out a loud high pitched scream and began to flair around like a fish out of water. "D-DONT TOUCH ME, I KNOW HOW TO FI-" he was cut off when he saw Kitzy on top of him, she quickly fell onto her back laughing hysterically. Hank sat up and looked down at his friend, glaring as his face turned red in embarrassment. "H-Hey it's not funny!" Hank snapped, causing Kitzy to laugh more "It Totally is! Hahaha!" Kitzy laughed, hank face palming before smiling and beginning to giggle a bit. "Ok, I guess it was kinda funny." Hank said, giving into his friend's little antics. "Let's go outside, hank! I wanna run around!" Kitzy said, jumping up and down in excitement and anticipation. "Alright, alright, let me get dressed first." Hank said, Shoving Kitzy off him and sitting up, still in his Pj's.
Hank got up out of bed and walked over to his dresser, picking out some clothes before turning around to look at Kitzy. "I gotta change. Meet you outside in 10?" He questioned, leading Kitzy to nod and smile, quickly getting up and jumping out the window. Hank ran over to his bed and stood up on it, going to look out the window. Goddamnit that ladder was there for a reason!
Before Hank could look out the window, Kitzy called out. "I'M OKAY!" She yelled, causing Hank to sigh. That girl was too much sometimes.
As Kitzy and Hank roamed the woods, they found a little place by the stream to sit at. There was a nice long to rest on that had fallen down, making a way to cross or rest over the stream. The two kids jumped up onto the fallen tree and sat down in the middle, looking down to see the flowing stream and sand. They sat down next to each other, hand in hand. Kitzy swung her feet back and forth and watched the stream flow, little fish swimming by. A thought crossed her mind, and she turned her head to look at hank. "Hank?" She spoke up, causing him to look over to her. "Yea Mittens?" Hah.. mittens. That was the nickname he had given her a few months ago after they had a party and she wore cat ears too it. Good times..
"Do you think we will ever.. uhm.."
Kitzy looked back down at the stream, and then looked to the side. "Not.. be Friends?" She asked, her voice lowering into a weak saddened one. Hank smiled and began to giggle, before the giggles turned into laughing. Kitzy looked at him, concerned for a bit. "Ahaha.. oh Kitzy, of course not! You're my best friend! My partner in crime, we're the perfect duo!" He said, wiping a tear from his eye before turning to her and placing both of his hands on hers. "I promise nothing will ever happen to our friendship. Ever."
"GOD WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE RIGHT NOW!" Hank shouted at Kitzy, causing her to flinch. "BECAUSE I LOVE YOU! YOUR MY BEST FRIEND WHY CAN'T WE JUST GET ALONG?" She cried out, looking at her angered friend. "BECAUSE YOU, UGH YOUR SO ANNOYING! CAN'T YOU BE REALISTIC FOR ONCE! GOOD GOD GROW UP KITZY, WERE NOT KIDS ANYMORE!" Tears began to fall down her face. "THIS IS THE REAL WORLD AND WERE NOT WORRIERS, WERE NOT FIGHTERS, WERE NOT WHAT WE DREAMED TO BE WE'RE JUST FREAKS!" She started to hyperventilate. "ALL THESE PAST YEARS HAVE BEEN ARE STRESSFUL AND HARD! AND MOST OF THAT IS YOUR FAULT!" Her breath hitched. "I WISH I WAS NEVER FRIENDS WITH YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE!" Hank screamed at her, tearing up.
Kitzy gasped, and took a few steps back. She held her hand over her face a bit. Her mouth hung agape as tears poured out of her eyes like a fountain, her makeup smeared, hiccups leaving her throat. At this point, after letting everything out, Hank had calmed down a bit. Causing him to look up at his best friend's face, and realize what he's done. "W-W-Wait Kitzy I didn't mean it like that I-" He was cut off by her turning around and running away from him, letting out sobs and whimpers as she ran down the hall until he couldn't see her anymore.
There were only a few more weeks left until graduation now.
How was he gonna apologize..?
That night Kitzy laid in bed crying four hours until she eventually fell asleep, holding onto an old framed photo of her and hank when they were little to her chest for dear life.
