Doubt and Revelation

Before meeting Evelyn, Liam had never thought about marriage.
After meeting Evelyn, he couldn't imagine marrying anyone else.

He had envisioned countless times giving Evelyn a grand, luxurious wedding, but those dreams were shattered—they were now at the marriage registration office.

Evelyn's face showed no trace of joy, nor any discontent. She looked as if she was just completing a task.

A strange emotion grew within Liam. He wanted to rush over and loudly demand,

"Why don't you look even a little bit happy?
Why do you show no emotion at all?
If you don't want to, you could choose not to marry. This is your choice.
Since you woke up, you've become a stranger to me. What are you thinking?"

But Liam did nothing.

He solemnly signed his name—just like he would on an important contract.

From that moment, they were legally married.

Liam suddenly had a suspicion:
could Evelyn's change be related to the deal he made at the shop, 13D?
She had been completely different since she woke up. But there was nothing wrong with the terms of the deal; Evelyn was just colder than before. Maybe it was the car accident, or perhaps...

Liam took a deep breath, pushing down those messy thoughts.

"Today is really special. Darling, is there anything you'd like to do to celebrate? I booked a restaurant in advance."

"I want to buy some clothes. After that, we can go to the restaurant. And don't call me 'darling,' it sounds strange. Just call me Evelyn."

Liam tried to make his tone cheerful.

"No problem, Evelyn. Let's go. I know a great fashion store you'll love."

Liam drove towards the city center, the scenery outside the window constantly changing.

"Evelyn, I'm really glad we got married today."

Evelyn looked at the passing scenery with little reaction. "Hmm, me too."

Ten minutes later.

"Here we are."

Liam chivalrously opened the car door for Evelyn.

She walked straight into the store without waiting for him, leaving Liam feeling a bit disappointed.

The store was exquisitely decorated, with soft light from crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and every detail showcasing its high-end quality. Each piece of clothing was displayed like a work of art, waiting for customers' admiration.

Evelyn glanced around, her eyes moving between the various display areas, picking out several brightly colored dresses.

"You rarely wore such bright colors before. Blue was your favorite. Do you want to try this one?"

"People change. I don't like blue anymore."

Women are always changeable, Liam thought, understandingly. He paid for the clothes.

"Now, let's head to the restaurant. I chose it based on your previous taste. I hope that hasn't changed."

At the Restaurant

The waiter handed them menus, and Liam smiled at Evelyn.

"You know the dishes here well. What would you like today?"

Evelyn glanced at the menu briefly.

"You order. I'm not picky."

Liam specifically ordered Evelyn's favorite dishes, hoping the familiar flavors might evoke her memories and emotions.

Soon, the dishes were served, and they began to eat.

"You used to love pan-fried foie gras, but you barely touched it. Is it not to your taste?"

"My tastes have changed. I prefer steak now."

Another awkward silence.

Liam, noticing Evelyn's reluctance to talk, stopped trying to make conversation. They ate in silence.

"Do you want anything else?" Liam asked, looking at the nearly empty plates.

"No, I'm full." Evelyn was using bread to soak up the remaining sauce on her plate.

Liam joked, "You don't need to be so frugal. We have plenty of food."

"My mother once..."

Liam was cutting his steak. "I didn't catch that. Did you say something about your mother?"

"No, you misheard."
Evelyn returned to her usual cold demeanor and put down the bread.
"I just thought the sauce was good. I'm done. Let's go."

Liam thought Evelyn was acting strangely. She never did this before.

"Do you remember our nicknames on the island?"

"Why ask suddenly? I was 'Thursday,' and you were 'Robinson.'"

"Nothing, just afraid you'd forget our past."

"Anything else you want to ask?"

"No."

"I'm tired. Let's go home."

Jason, as usual, was waiting at the villa entrance. Unlike usual, his signature smile was replaced by a worried expression.

"Sir, Sunny isn't doing well today. He was vomiting earlier, probably from eating something bad," Jason said, his tone filled with concern.

"Where is Sunny?" Liam asked anxiously.

"I already sent him to Angel's Pet Hospital."

Liam was about to drive to see Sunny when he noticed Evelyn standing still.

"Evelyn, aren't you coming with me?"

"I don't see why we need to go. Jason already sent him to the pet hospital. We can't help him there."

Liam looked at Evelyn in disbelief. He couldn't believe such words came from her mouth.

"Evelyn, you feel like a stranger to me." With that, he drove off.

Liam drove fast, his mind full of questions. Evelyn's changes went beyond her attitude toward food and clothing.
Her emotional responses had become cold and distant. He began to doubt whether the Evelyn before him was really the same woman he knew and loved.

Since Sunny fell ill, Liam and Evelyn had grown more distant.

Even Jason noticed something was off. Liam and Evelyn used to come home together, but now they rarely did. Evelyn seemed more dedicated to her work than Liam had ever been—arriving early and leaving late, often working in the study at night.

Of course, Evelyn's dedication paid off.

Initially, the company's veterans were unhappy with her sudden promotion to General Manager, but her performance won them over, earning their praise.

Seeing Liam come home alone again, Jason sighed.

The Next Day at TechNova, CEO Office

Liam was focused on paperwork, his pen flying across the pages. Michael knocked lightly before entering, holding a file.

"Mr. Liam," Michael said politely, "here's today's schedule."

Liam glanced up, nodded, and motioned for him to continue.

"At 10 a.m., you have a conference call with headquarters to discuss next quarter's strategic planning," Michael said, flipping through his files. "At 2 p.m., you're meeting with Mark Stewart, the new CEO of Evans Tech, to discuss potential collaborations. And there's one more thing you need to note."

"What is it?" Liam asked without looking up.

"It's about our contract with Helix Corporation. Their new CEO, John Turner, wants to discuss the contract details today."

Liam looked puzzled, lifting his head to face Michael. "John Turner? Wasn't I negotiating with Jack Spencer a few days ago?"

Michael explained, "Jack Spencer recently resigned. John Turner is the new CEO."

Liam fell into deep thought, murmuring to himself, "So, the president of Helix Corporation can be Jack Spencer or John Turner. And the woman in the hospital bed can be Evelyn, or someone else entirely."

Michael, hearing Liam's murmurs, looked confused. "Sir, what are you saying?"

"'As long as you, Liam Montgomery, exist, Liam Montgomery's wife will always and only be the woman in Mount Sinai Hospital Room 1101.'"

Liam recalled the shopkeeper's words from 13D.

Suddenly, he noticed something peculiar: during their conversation, he had mentioned Evelyn's name, but the shopkeeper always referred to her as 'the woman in Mount Sinai Hospital Room 1101.' Why would he go to such lengths unless the woman in that hospital room wasn't Evelyn?"

Realizing this, Liam sprang from his chair and rushed out of the office. At the door, he urgently told Michael,
"Cancel all my appointments today. I'll deal with them later."

Leaving Michael puzzled, Liam hurried out.

Once out of the office, Liam immediately called Oliver.

"Hey, Oliver, I need to talk to you. Can we meet somewhere?" Liam's tone was unusually tense.

"Sure, what's so urgent?" Oliver asked curiously.

"I'll explain when we meet. It's important," Liam said before hanging up.

Oliver chuckled to himself after hanging up. "The workaholic Liam is actually stepping out during office hours?"

At a Quiet Corner of a Café

The soft lighting and serene atmosphere made it the perfect place for a private conversation.

Liam wasted no time. "I think the current Evelyn isn't the same as before."

Oliver frowned, puzzled. "What are you talking about? How can there be two Evelyns? Are you suggesting she has a twin?"

Quickly dismissing his own guess, Oliver added,

"That's too far-fetched. It's impossible. One sister gets into a car accident and mysteriously disappears, while the other ends up in the hospital bed? That's crazier than a magic trick."

"I think you're just overstressed. Evelyn's accident shook you up.
Honestly, you need some rest. People do change, especially after such near-death experiences like Evelyn's."

"No, I'm very clearheaded. I haven't lost my sanity. I know this sounds absurd, but please believe me.
Since waking up, Evelyn's habits, interests, and even the way she looks at me are completely different.
Even though she knows all our past memories in detail, it always seems like she's piecing them together when I mention something specific.
She looks exactly like Evelyn, but I know she isn't."

Oliver questioned, "Then how does this Evelyn know all your shared memories? Unless there's something supernatural like memory sharing or brain swapping. But our lives aren't a sci-fi movie."

His words sparked a realization in Liam.

Evelyn's overnight recovery was already supernatural.

And then there was that mysterious 13D shop...

Liam took a deep breath.
"Oliver, I need you to compare Evelyn's current DNA with her previous hospital records. The test results will tell the truth."

"Alright, I'll let you know as soon as I have the results."

A Few Days Later

Oliver met Liam with an unusually serious expression, handing over the test report.

"If I hadn't done the test myself, I'd suspect tampering. I still can't believe you were right."

"So, they're strangers?"

"My God!" Oliver was shocked.

"You're amazing! I thought you'd conclude they're twins. This makes no sense. Even identical twins aren't 100% alike. Two unrelated strangers? How is this possible? What will you do next?"

"I've uncovered some other information. I think I know who this fake Evelyn really is.
I need to confront her and find out where my Evelyn is."
