3: Popsicle
Kira was enjoying a blood popsicle as she comfortably sat on a chair near the window with a book in her hand, her feet stretched against the wall occasionally swaying the chair back in rocking motions as her feet pushed against the wall. She lifted her eyes to look outside for a second and found Gouenji's car approaching rapidly.
"Shit." She mumbled under her breath as she quickly tossed the popsicle out of the window without a thought and ran to open the door.
"Welcome home!" She said as she pulled him into a kiss as he entered the house.
Gouenji almost gasped as soon as his lips touched hers, for the sweet scent of blood and a subtle taste of it overcame his senses.
"It can't be. She's human. It can't be what I think it is." He reasoned with himself, "I must still be under the spell of the glass I had in the apartment." He couldn't find a better explanation.
He was still bewildered when they broke apart. He looked around with a blank expression on his face while Kira stared at him quizzically. She was about to question him what was wrong when he absent-mindedly muttered,
"Something smells delicious."
"I made grilled-cheese sandwiches for dinner." Kira answered.
Gouenji was then broken away from his thoughts and returned to the real world. His face slightly grimaced as he heard the word 'grilled-cheese sandwiches'. The aftertaste of the glass of blood he had before coming home was still lingering and now it was all going to be ruined with dusty mortal food.
"Great. I'll just freshen up and be back." He somehow managed to smile as he said it.
As he went upstairs, Kira ran towards the window to find out where the popsicle had landed. She found out it fell in the flower beds right under the window. Half of it had melted by then and formed a thick red patch in the soil. Kira stared at it like a sad puppy as the patch got bigger and bigger and the stick became visible from underneath.
"My popsicle..." She muttered in agony as if it was the last good thing remaining on earth.

Gouenji had something to think about to distract him from the dusty taste of the food and that was the fact that he kept getting whiffs of an irresistible scent that drove him crazy and made it hard to keep his composure. He wanted to find out where it was coming from as soon as possible.
After dinner, Kira went upstairs and Gouenji pretended he wanted to read a book in the living room before sleeping and stayed. He waited for her to leave and as she did, he hastily started looking everywhere to find the source of this scent, turning the cushions of the sofa, looking under the furniture and the cabinets in the kitchen. It felt like a tiny tornado was moving around in the house. After frantically searching around for about 10 minutes, he calmed himself down and decided to have a more systematic approach towards the problem.
He stood still, eyes closed so as to not be distracted by any object, and took a deep breath. The next moment, his eyes shot open and he ran towards the window. He bent down and picked up the blood smeared popsicle stick examining it with confusion. Just to be sure one last time, he brought it closer to his nose and took a hearty whiff. The scent was fresh and wholesome, so divine that he almost lost his mind. He then shook his head to clear his mind and examined the stick carefully.
"I've never had a blood popsicle in my life. Why didn't I though? What is wrong with me? This smells like this would have been awesome....wait, focus! How did it get here if it's not mine?" He scratched his head in confusion.
The next moment, Kira descended the stairs to find out what was Gouenji doing. She had still been worried about the fate of her popsicle and she was afraid somehow it would be found out. She had taken one or two steps down when she saw Gouenji standing near the window with a popsicle stick in his hand, his face dripping with confusion. She wanted to run away upstairs and pretend to fall asleep, the instant she saw this scene but before she could, Gouenji spotted her.
"What are you doing?" She asked, trying her best to hide the nervousness in her voice.
"Look at this." He extended the popsicle stick towards her.
"Ew, gross. There's dirt on it."
"There's blood on it too."
"Really?" Kira took it from his hand and pretended to examine the stick with wonder.
"This was one delicious popsicle." She thought as she fake-studied it. After a couple of moments, she spoke,
"I'm sure a raccoon must have brought it in the garden after fighting another raccoon, hence the blood." She explained nonchalantly and tossed the stick outside again.
"But..." Gouenji's eyes followed the trajectory of the stick. He was about to object that the blood was human but he stopped because he would have no explanation for why he could tell the difference.
"I guess." His voice trailed off into silence.
"Come on now, you seem too tired or else you would not be examining popsicle sticks at 12 in the night." She commented while mentally deciding to clean the flower beds first thing before dawn.
Gouenji was still confused, but having no other clues he didn't say anything further.
