Shoto’s POV
I layed in my bed, topless, sighing as I ran my hand through my wet hair. I yawned some, exhausted from the training I endured after getting back from the library. Fucking father.. I grit my teeth in annoyance as I rolled over peering at my alarm clock. “I might as well get a shirt on, dinner will most likely be done soon..” I scoffed to myself, not looking forward to a meal in the presence of my father. Sitting up I’m immediately frozen as my ringtone filled my room. I scrambled over to the small object, gazing at the caller's name a moment. She actually called me? I grinned a bit while answering. “Hello.” I whispered.
“Morning Shoto..” She grumbled a bit before clearing her throat. “I mean, night.. Heh.” She chuckled awkwardly causing me to tap my finger on my desk.
“Y-yeah, good morning to you (Y/n). I didn’t think you’d really call..” Hearing a prominent scoff, I frowned.
“Of course I’d call, I was afraid I’d be too late. But how was your day?” Her slurring words had finally cleared up and I sat down, tracing my finger on my desk.
“It was okay…” There was silence and I bit my lip. She must be ignoring me..
“And?” My face reddened as her voice gave a slightly harsh indication to tell her more.
“Oh! Uh, well we had endless training this morning instead of core classes. I..I’m sorry about that by the way..” I whispered. Light laughter filled my ears pleasantly and I relaxed.
“Don’t be sorry, it was the school's fault.” I rubbed my neck.
“It was more of Momo’s fault…” I sighed, growling, my anger serging with the thought. “I said some pretty mean things to her…”
“Hey...hey.. How was it her fault? And what did you say?” Closing my eyes I struggled to tell her.
“Well, she was my partner and it felt like I was the only one fighting. I actually was. She was making a light for Tokoyami but it was taking so much longer than normal… I was fighting two of my classmates at once. I’ve fought my dad and some of his friends and came out on top, how the hell I couldn’t fight them was beyond me.. And I told her a shapeshifter could have been more help than she was. And I thought my day would have been well…” Hearing some heavy breathing come through the phone once silent scared me.
“So you were paired up with someone who wouldn’t fight? I’m so sorry she’s too stupid to fucking help you.” (Y/n) voice was cold as she growled angrily.
“B-but!!! After solo training I felt better! And.. yeah.. Then Hatsume and Iida invited me to go to the library with them after school. Oh, she brought books to your house? So you might want to get them… Then I came home and… Sperm donor was here and he had me train…. Then you called.” It went dead silent and I coughed softly.
“Iida and Hatsume?? God, she actually listened to me! I bet they're adorable. And thank you, mom just left to get mail, so I’ll get them, thanks.” Her light squeal of happiness brought a warm feeling that I still hadn’t been used to. “Though, I’m sorry you’re having a bad day.. That’s why I was waiting for you to say more. It was kinda clear by your voice that it wasn’t okay… I can’t believe he can’t just let you go home and relax. Aspiring hero or not, you’re still human.” I looked down at my desk, her words which had changed from excited to worried had hit a soft spot in my heart. Human…
“Not to him.” I couldn’t hold back the cold retort. “He’d never see me as anything but a tool.. An experiment.”
“And he’s stupid. You’re something much more. Even the scum of the earth is human, not that I think he is though.” She gave a small laugh, causing me to mirror the action.
“He’s definitely not human...” I trailed off, sighing. I didn’t know what to talk about, but I knew I didn’t want to get off. “So..uh..” I couldn’t find the words, what are words even?
“Shoto! Dinner!” I grumbled as I held the phone away from me and covered it a bit.
“Okay Fuyumi! I’ll be down momentarily.” Hearing her hum in response I brought the phone back. “I’m sorry…”
“Heh! Don’t be Sho- Oh thanks mom? Uh, have a good dinner Shoto. I’ll talk to you later?” I stared at the table. Sho…? I like that...
“Call me Sho…. And yeah.. Have a good day (Y/n). Thank you for listening to me..”
“Never a problem Sho! You have a good night, get plenty of rest.” I hung up and shuffled to my closet and grabbed a shirt, throwing it on messily, my face bright red.
“I just told her to call me that.. Why did it sound so sweet hearing such a childish nickname?” I huffed, and made my way downstairs. I don’t like this one bit. I strolled into the dining room and grabbed the furthest seat from Endeavor as food was sat down on the table. “Thank you.” I nodded to the maid as she smiled and walked back towards the kitchen.
“Shoto! You look like you’re sick! You better not be!” My dad boomed from his spot, causing me to touch my burning cheek. Shit… Am I blushing or something? I coughed and smirked.
“Nope, just feeling a tad disturbed by your presence.” I said before eating and ignoring his complaints.
(Y/n)’s POV
After Shoto hung up I looked at my mom who stood in front of me. “You also got a fancy letter!” She squealed, giving me a red, thick letter envelope. “Open it! I’m so excited!” Looking at the beautiful hand writing of my name I opened the envelope slowly. The envelope is a thick material? My brows rose as I realized it only consisted of one piece of paper.
“Dear (L/n), it’s pretty sudden and you do not know me, but I’d love it if you came and had dinner with my family! Maybe next Tuesday at 6? If you have any issues or questions please call me at ***-***-****! With care, Fuyumi…. Todoroki…?” My eyes widened as I read the last name and I slowly peeked up at my surprised parents.
“Oh!!! You should! You should!” My mom jumped happily. I gazed at my dad’s encouraging smile and picked my phone back up from my lap and dialed the number.
“Fuyumi speaking, who is this?” I took a deep breath.
“(Y/n) (L/n)...” The girl squealed happily.
“I’m so glad I haven’t sat down to eat yet! You got my letter?”
“Uhh, yeah… And I wanted to ask who all would be joining..” Her line went silent before she laughed.
“Me, my brother~, and my dad of course!” My face contorted and I sighed.
“Does he know I’d be coming over?” I asked, looking at the letter again.
“Shoto? Nope! It’s a surprise!!” Rubbing my temple I contemplated it.
“I’m sorry ma’am, I’d like to decline your generous offer. I’m not comfortable eating in the presence of your father, and not without Shoto’s knowledge.” I heard her give a soft whine.
“Okay! Well, what if I tell Shoto, and maybe have you over on a day my dad’s gone? He’ll be having an out of country tour in a few days.” I hummed at her deal.
“Maybe… Call me back when he leaves so I can think about it please.”
“Of course! Thank you!” She squealed. “Bye now! Shoto’s down now and sounds like he’s fighting.” She giggled and hung up. I sighed and slammed down on my back.
“His family just sounds… so lovely…” I groaned out, looking at my parents happy gazes. “Go away, I'm gonna get dressed.” I muttered as they quickly exited my tent. Sitting up again I grabbed my clothes that were sat to the side and put them on. But why does she want me there? Pushing the thought to the side I ventured out of the tent and to my parents who were making breakfast over a portable grill thing.
“Honey!” My mom exclaimed, grinning and nudging my dad.
“You know it's true!” He exclaimed back as I raised a brow.
“What’s true?” I tilted my head causing my parents to whip theirs to me.
“Nothing!” They squeaked in unison, causing me to raise my eyebrow more in disbelief, humming in a ‘yeah right’ tone.
“We just think it’d be a good idea to meet your soulmate's family!” My mom quickly stated, thrashing her hands in front of her.
“Exc- what?” My dad wrapped a hand around my mom and smiled.
“Sweetie! It’s a great opportunity. We don’t like his father too much either, but it’s so rude to decline such an offer.” He reasoned, before turning them both back to the portable cooker and grabbing the food off of it. “Now eat up!” He said, handing me a small plate. I just frowned, holding the plate, my glare steadily on their forms.
“No. I don’t want to see his father at all. And besides wouldn’t it be even more rude if I showed up unexpectedly? Cause I would have been showing up without his knowledge.” My mother sighed, nodding.
“Absolutely. Our issue is with the fact that you are giving a terrible demand of having his father, the man of the house, absent from the home. He’s their sole provider, I ran into an article, his mother is in a mental ward for harming Shoto.” My mother’s flustered phase of being caught talking behind my back passed and she gave me her ‘don’t argue’ look. I stood my ground though, Shoto’s brief fly over of his past ringing clearly in my head.
“He doesn’t hold his mother responsible for that. And you should know that as you’re just as upset that Endeavor abused his kids, that’d mean he abused his wife as well, am I right? It was most likely a mental issue, and I’d go as far as saying Shoto’s probably happy as hell she’s out of the house.” I turned and walked away to prove my point. Try me, I swear to god, try to argue. I huffed, sitting in my tent, eating.
~Timeskip brought to you by adorable mixed feelings Shoto~
I turned over in my spot as I layed restlessly, my eyes caught sight of the dead plants that were sprawled by me, so wilted and withered that if I touched them, maybe they'd decrease to nothing but dust. Slowly my hand reached up and my fingers brushed over my arm where they had been hours prior, and I knew just why I couldn't sleep. It happened again… What’s happened in the past two days? I grabbed my phone and idly scrolled through mine and Sho’s conversations since the call a few days back. Seeing as most were good mornings and good nights paired with brief descriptions of each other's days.
He seemed so happy till I brought up one question after the third time my arm sprouted a few flowers in one day. Now it wasn’t enough to be worried but I couldn’t help it.
[(Y/n): Sho, what’s been happening? It’s the third time you’ve hurt your arm in one way or another. Are you okay?
Shosho: Of course! I’ve just been busy training, sorry for my carelessness.]
I blankly stared at that message again. I really want to call him stupid… I sighed and looked at the conversation more.
[(Y/n): Okay, but you should be in core classes right now?
Shosho: Uhh, yeah, and because of that we really shouldn’t be talking! Bye!
(Y/n): Sho? Shoto! It’s fucking break period between classes, get your lying ass back here!]
My eyes dulling reread his message. I knew he was lying, he never uses exclamation marks when texting. Plus how long it took him just to send me the part about being in class. Reading it all together feels surreal. Grumbling I sat up and gave the flowers a lingering gaze before hitting the phone icon on the top. Holding the phone close to my ear I waited with bated breath till the phone was answered and a breathless Shoto was panting into the receiver.
“Uhhhh….” I whispered. “Did I...interrupt you?” My voice was feeble. I think it’s lunch time there… He’s probably… My eyes narrowed as the thought fell upon me. Making out with her.
“N..No…” He huffed out. “I’m in class warm up right now.” I peeked at my screen to see it was 1. Oh, wait it’s 2 there..
“I’m sorry! I’m just…” I trailed off, trying to cover the ample amount of worry I held for him.
“Are you okay?” His breath had come back and as I thought on an answer I heard him take a drink of water. Real smooth, brat. I smiled some as I shook my head.
“No! I’m worried though…. Shoto what’s happening?” The line went silent, unable to hear his breathing even.
“...(Y/n). I’m fine.” Once he said that I could hear the hesitance in his voice pleading I give up asking. My lip involuntarily quivered as I found no acceptance in his answer but kept quiet.
“O-okay….” I laid down, trying to calm the underlying regret that laced my small word. It was silent for a split second till I heard a male voice calling Shoto.
“One minute please!” I heard his loud response, though muffled. “(Y/n) why are you even awake? Are you that worried?” He asked in a hushed voice. I nodded knowing he couldn’t see me.
“..Ye-” He cut me off with light offkey humming, almost sounding like he was trying to remember what the noise sounded like. It sounded vaguely familiar and my eyes started to close at how soothing it was, even with the stuttering of it. My eyes snapped open as I heard my own snore along with my phone going off, though Shoto was still humming away. “Sh-Sho!” I called out. “I’m getting a call… I’ll talk to you later?” His humming faltered before he cleared his throat.
“Who’d be calling you at this hour? Uh, yeah I guess…” The soft sadness in his voice blew me away as I hung up as the phone stopped ringing. That’s weird? Either way we would have stopped talking sooo… I rubbed my eyes as I looked at the missed call and clicked the return call button.
“You called back! I’m sorry you must be busy!” The woman chuckled nervously. I turned the phone to speaker as I laid my phone on my chest.
“I was actually on call with Shoto… and it’s 1 in the morning here.” I laughed dryly.
“Then why were you talking to him? Oh wait! If it’s that early I should end this quickly! He left sooner than planned! What do you think about coming over for dinner tomorrow? Or maybe today?” I rolled my eyes at her eagerness.
“Today’s good!!” I let out a screech sitting up as my phone tumbled to my straight legs as my eyes shot over to my mom crouching by my tent.
“Really? I’m so excited! I’ll see you at 7?”
“Sounds great! See you then!” My mother grinned, taking the phone and ending the call as I sat there a look crossed between pissed and confused. “Well get your clothes and books, don’t worry about the stuff like the tent, your father and I will get that in the morning! And I’ll get you home now! Get some rest on the flight back kay baby girl?” I huffed at her enthusiastic view of it.
“You’re giving me not even 4 hours of sleep??” I whined, my mom standing over me and heaving me to my feet.
“Not even 3. But you’re fine!!” She grinned, grabbing my bag of clothes that the books also were shoved in with and hauled me and my items out.
~Timeskip of 3 hours of sleep~
I jumped out of the shower, quickly drying my hair with my towel as I rushed around to find clothes suitable for this. Wait? Why do I need to dress up? I stopped my search, holding my hand to my chin in thought. A squeal ripped through my throat as the air hit the small amount of water that hadn’t been soaked up and I grabbed the towel that dropped, drying the rest of my body off and settling with a simple (F/c) dress paired with (black/white) leggings. Sighing as I stared into my mirror I started nitpicking everything. Why am I going? Does Shoto really know I’m coming over? Is it wrong? Ugh I wish my mom wouldn’t have made me come back… I groaned getting up and making my way out of the house. I looked down at the screen with the address.
Making my way quite aimlessly to their house I couldn't help the questions bubbling up. "Why didn't I just tell her no? I mean I could have cut my mom off.. It's not like I'm ready to see him. We only just became friends of sorts." I tapped my finger on my arm as I held them together. "Most importantly, why didn't I grab an actual coat?" I grumbled looking at the thin 3 quarter sleeved jacket that I put on. My eyes widened at the huge house- "No that's a fucking mansion." I gasped and double checked my phone, gulping at the uninviting structure of the towering house of Todoroki. My head bobbled as I considered my choices. Leave now and forever be free or chance it and walk to the door? My body had acted on its own accord while thinking and I had already knocked on the door by the time I caught up. I sighed regretfully, standing awkwardly shy. Can't back out now…
"I don't get why I couldn't see friends but you have one coming over Fuyumi." A deep annoyed voice stated while the door opened.
"Oh, she didn't tell you." I huffed, staring at Shoto once he was in view.
