JOHN'S POV
I kicked bottles that were littered on the floor till I reached my office door. I opened it and noticed Eniola's desk was still empty. I sighed deeply and removed my jacket. I hadn't seen or heard from James in two days and it was getting worrisome. I almost failed to notice Kemi typing swiftly on the computer sitting on her rowdy desk.
"Good morning Kemi, you are quite early this morning." I said, checking my watch.
"Well, I have to be punctual to keep my job sir." Kemi remarked, standing up.
"Have you eaten sir?" Kemi added, tilting her head.
"No, I haven't, I'll probably head to the court lounge to get something to eat." I concluded, rolling up my sleeves.
"Could I follow you, I haven't eaten too." Kemi remarked, heading for the door.
I reached the door knob before her and gave her a faint smile. I opened the door ajar sending Kemi into a state of amazement.
"Ladies first." I replied, making a wink at her.
"I don't think that's necessary sir. You can leave, I'll lock the door." Kemi insisted, folding her palms together.
"What did I tell you about refusing orders from your boss?" I asked, sighing theatrically.
"I am sorry sir." Kemi replied blushing , walking out of the door.
I locked the door behind me and we both strolled towards our destination. There was no conversation, it was an enjoyable and blissful silence. We reached the court lounge which was typically filled.
"I'll go order something to eat sir." Kemi said, running towards the counter.
"And I'll look for a place for us to sit." I muttered, searching for any empty spot.
I saw an oval table which was very convenient and I walked towards it, refusing to glance at the ladies who kept ogling me with their eyes.
I sat down, relishing the feel of the air conditioner soothing my face. I tapped the table lightly, humming to a familiar tune. Kemi walked towards the table, her hands filled with two plates of toast and egg. I reached up to take the tray from Kemi and placed it on the table.
"Thank you, sir." Kemi said, lowering her body into a seat.
"You are welcome. Let's eat." I replied, grabbing the toast in my hands.
Kemi chuckled and it was lovely.
"I think it's advisable to use a fork, since you are in public, sir." Kemi advised, smiling.
"As long as I am satisfied with my meal, nothing else matters." I replied, taking a quick bite of the toast.
The television in the lounge snapped open with an off-putting noise.
"Now I can't eat my food in peace." I remarked, opening a bottle of water.
Then the voice of a reporter echoed from the television. I held the bottled water in my hands and took a gulp.
"This is breaking news from Channels Television. It was reported this morning about the death of a young woman who was buried alive. The young woman is identified as Eniola Gbadamosi and the perpetrator of this disgusting act is Ayo George who is now undergoing series of investigation. What a terrible news to begin such a morning."
I spat out the water that was midway into the back of my throat on seeing an image of Eniola and Ayo being displayed on the screen.
"Eniola?" I whispered.
"Sir, you need to calm down." Kemi said placing a frantic hand on her chest.
"Calm down? Didn't you hear the news? Eniola is dead." I deadpanned, rising up to my feet.
"How did it happen? What's going on?" I yelled, throwing my unfinished food on the floor.
"Please stop shouting." The waiter said, glaring at me.
"Don't shut me up." I screamed, throwing the glass cup on the table near the television screen. The glass cup shattered on the floor making all eyes to turn.
"Sir, let's go back to the office." Kemi suggested, rising up to her feet.
I ignored Kemi's remark and walked out of the court lounge. My body shook. Streaks of tears and sweat ran down my cheeks as I entered the office, closing it harshly.
I punched the wall repeatedly till blood spilled out. I walked over to my desk and flipped it over, scattering court files on the ground. I threw my body on the ground and sobbed.
"Why Eniola? Why did it have to you?" I asked, shaking my head in doubt.
"This is all my fault, ever since I came back everything has been wrong. It is all me. It"s always been me." I cried, banging the tiled ground repeatedly.
I buried my head on my lap and shrieked. I couldn't believe that Eniola was gone forever. My heart thumped faster threatening to jump out as I held my chest.
The door clicked open and Kemi walked in solemnly.
"Sir, I-"
"Get out!" I barked.
Kemi recoiled and ran out without saying a word. I continued sobbing recklessly, hitting the floor till I was exhausted.
JAMES'S POV
I struggled in the handcuffs attached to the wooden table. I gritted my teeth and tried to slip my hands out but it didn't work and I leaned back into the wooden chair, panting heavily.
"What are you trying to do?" David chuckled, casting a critical glance at me.
"You won't keep me here for long, sooner or later people would find out." I yelled.
"Why can't you shut up? You keep making your predicament much worse." David grinned, settling down on a chair opposite mine.
"I have some great news for you. Do you know anyone bearing Eniola Gbadamosi?" David inquired, putting his legs on the wooden table.
"I don't think I remember." I stated, wearing a stern look.
"Really? Your facial expression changed at the mention of that name." David chuckled, placing his left hand on his chin.
"Then there's no reason to ask that question." I replied, nodding my head.
David laughed and brought out his mobile phone from his pockets and flipped it open. Seconds later, he pushed the phone to the centre of the table, gesturing at me to look and I looked into the phone with a blank expression.
"What's this?" I asked, casting a glare at him.
"Can't you read?" David deadpanned, chuckling in excitement.
"That's a lie. That's impossible." I yelled, rising up to my feet to grab David but the cuffs held me back.
"Why are you so angry? You said you didn't know her." David winked, dropping his legs on the ground with a thump.
"Stop lying." I screamed.
"Was she important to you? The news stated she was buried alive." David smiled, rubbing his chin.
"I said stop lying, your jokes aren't funny anymore." I replied, my voice breaking into a whisper.
"I don't lie and you know it." David grimaced, pushing his shoulders out.
"Did you love her? You are really furious and its amusing to see." David added, patting my hands.
"You are only trying to play mind games and I am not in the mood." I replied hastily.
"Look very closely at the screen." David said, rising up to his feet.
My heart thumped faster against my rib cage as I reached to look at the phone once more. The screen displayed a picture of an lifeless Eniola..
"Do you believe me now?" David inquired, squeezing his lips.
I was too heartbroken to reply his stupid question as my soul was plagued with accepting what I had just seen. I still couldn't believe that person I loved was dead forever.
"You are still playing games. Haven't you done enough?" I yelled, as the first wave of agony started from my eyes.
"Deny it all you want. You know it's true." David chuckled, laughing loudly.
I felt a sudden feeling in my gut, the feeling of pain. I felt a tightness in my chest and panic clenching around my heart. It felt like my lungs were about to burst. I still couldn't grab the gravity of the situation.
"Were you the one who did it? Did you kill Eniola? She didn't do anything. You are a monster." I said, as tears leaked from the corner of my left eye.
"I wish I did, but guess what, I didn't do it. You have so many enemies Your Honor." David replied, grinning.
"The rule of karma always come back and you deserve it. Now you know how it feels like to lose someone you care about dearly." David whispered, holding my chin in his hands.
I shifted my face from his grip and wept.
"No, it can't be." I whispered.
"This is just the beginning of your downfall. I am going to make sure you lose yourself and I am going to enjoy every bit of it." David hissed, reaching for a knife from his pocket.
"I promise I will haunt and hunt you, dead or alive." I yelled, shifting my hands in the cuff trying to regain freedom.
"I look forward to it but first let me show you your reality." David smirked, grazing the sharp tip of the knife on my bare palm and dug deeper.
I knew I should be feeling agony, distress or even despair but I didn't feel anything. No pain. No sadness. Just nothing.
