Chapter Eighteen
Someone dropped by her place, a simple knock at the front door. Leonardo was in their bedroom on a phone call with someone of high status and importance. It was most likely one of the company's investors or a good friend of his parents. Her fiancé was always out to impress the wealthy people, even if they were absolute scumbags. It was late in the afternoon, two days after she and Damian made her play doctor, and she was relaxing.
It had been a long day of running errands for Leonardo. He needed a number of different things that made no sense to her whatsoever. Nevertheless, she managed to get everything off of his eccentric list. The items ranged from small sticky note packages to bullets for the gun he kept on him. Leonardo explained that his father wished for him to be safe while in Gotham and demanded that he have a gun in case someone tried to hurt them.
Mar'i hated the idea of him having a gun, people shouldn't need guns. Then again she disliked the idea of unnecessary violence and having a gun came with a lot of responsibility. "I'll get it!" she yelled, sighing and standing from the couch. The young woman buttoned the first few buttons of the large white dress shirt she was wearing, mostly to hide the exposed skin underneath.
Her feet padded against the hardwood floor towards the front door as she buttoned the last of the three buttons towards the middle of the shirt. Without thinking she turned the doorknob and opened the door. "And how can I help you," she lifted her head and looked up, "- Uncle Jay?" her eyes went wide and she immediately crossed her arms over her chest. The last time she saw her uncle was many, many years ago.
Why he was here now completely baffled her. The tall muscular man took one look at her and covered his eyes with his hands. "Do you always answer your door to family members half naked?" he inquired, chin turned up towards the ceiling.
"I wasn't expecting it to be you, what are you even doing here?" she asked.
"Oh you know, just dropping by." he answered awkwardly.
"Do you think you could put something on or are you going to let me stand out here covering my eyes like an idiot?" he asked.
A blanket fell onto her shoulders just as he said that. She turned her head slightly to the left and looked up at the brunet hovering behind her. "Who may this be?" Leonardo asked, hands falling onto her shoulders on top of the blanket. Judging by the softness of the fabric and grey colour she guessed it was the throw blanket from the couch she was previously lounging on. "This is my Uncle Jay, you can open your eyes now." She introduced while wrapping the large blanket around her.
The last thing she expected was to see her Uncle Jason at her doorway. How did he even know she was in Gotham? Jason pulled his hands away from over his eyes and for a moment he looked slightly unsettled. "You must be her boyfriend." He said with a tight smile.
"Fiancé." She corrected, slipping her hand out from the blanket and flashing the diamond ring off to him.
Jason straightened his leather jacket and gave her fiancé another tight smile. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the thick dark hair gently. "So, how's it hanging?" he asked while sizing Leonardo up. Mar'i smiled and stepped out of the way of the front door to let him inside. Her uncle took a step inside the large apartment, slipping his hands into his jacket pockets and whistling. "Wow what in the hell did this guy have to do to get you to marry him?" he asked incredulously.
She sighed and shook her head. Sometimes her uncle was quite dramatic and the few times she has seen him he always had something negative to say about the men around her. Mostly because he didn't think any man was worthy enough of having his niece's hand in marriage. "So I take it that rich bitch here and you did the ol' razzle dazzle before I got here. Do you want me to pop a cap in his smug ass now or later for violating you?" Jason growled.
The young woman visibly paled, all colour seemingly draining like water down a sink. Jason was very protective of her for reasons that happened way back when she was ten-years-old. "Okay, no one is popping a cap anywhere. Anyways, back to what I asked earlier. What brings you here Uncle Jay?" she asked. The man still hadn't given her a straight answer. He wasn't really the type of person to just drop by.
There was a reason he was here, there was always a reason. Jason walked around his niece and narrowed his eyes at Leonardo. He instead pulled Mar'i in for an unexpected hug, eyes narrowing on her fiancé standing behind her. "Hadn't seen you in awhile kiddo, I was hanging around with your mom and Roy and she suggested coming over to see you." He said, lying through his teeth.
"Did she? I need to invite her over soon for dinner, as well as mum." She smiled and pulled away from the hug.
"I'm going to put some clothes on, excuse me for a moment." She continued excusing herself from the room.
The two men watched her until she disappeared down the nearby corridor. They both stood still until they heard the familiar sound of a door being closed. She would take five minutes at the most, that was enough time. Jason didn't hesitate to reach for the guns holstered at his hips. Leonardo had the same idea pulling out his own gun and pointing it towards him. "It seems we're at a stalemate." The brunet quipped.
They both had their weapons at the ready. Jason, however, seemed to have doubled the firepower than he did. Jason smirked, "When you called me up for a job, well let's just say it wasn't exactly what I was expecting." Leonardo rolled his eyes. The two of them stood there ready to fire a bullet at any moment. They also kept in mind that their dear Mar'i Grayson was just down the hallway. "Also, didn't know you were fucking around with my niece. That in itself should earn a bullet to the dick." Jason growled.
His fingers were itching to pull the triggers of his guns, itching to blow this guy away with a barrage. However, he refrained simply because of his niece. Figuring out an explanation as to why he filled her fiancé's guts full of lead was a little challenging. "I'd watch that tone of yours; after all, I am paying you." Leonardo taunted. It had been a few minutes and the two of them were walking circles around each other.
Jason was the first to put his guns away, concealing them underneath his leather jacket. The shorter of the latter followed in suit tucking the pistol into the back of his dress pants underneath his blazer. "You owe me double, didn't tell me the guy was a fucking assassin." He spat. Leonardo looked genuinely surprised when he said that.
The man in front of him was the highest paid marksman in the market. He went under the name Red Hood and man was the guy good. Jason Todd had a great number of kills underneath his belt. The catch was that he only killed bad people, worst of the worst. Most of the time it was for a price but sometimes he couldn't help but take the law into his own hands. "Besides you telling me he was a hardcore drug dealer to minors, what beef did you have with him to want him dead?" Jason asked, genuinely curious.
It was only a matter of time now before the police found the kid dead in his apartment. Jason was a well-trained fighter but the moves that kid had were assassin-like. He got a few good hits in and managed to give him one good stab with his rigid knife before high tailing it out of there. The way they messed up the main room would probably make it look like a theft gone wrong so he had nothing to worry about. "I have my reasons. Besides he was dealing drugs to kids, is that not enough fuel for your fire?" he said, words rolling off his tongue.
Leonardo turned and pulled his checkbook out of his pocket, a pen from his blazer pocket, and quickly scribbled the details out on the check. "Here's double for your," he looked him up and down mildly disgusted, "- troubles." He finished passing the marksman his check. They heard the door open down the hallway and Leonardo immediately began to laugh. Jason slipped the check into his pocket and clapped Leo on the back laughing as well.
She smiled when she re-entered the living room; this time fully clothed and happy to see that the two of them were getting along. "What have I missed?" she asked with a smile glued to her face. Her fiancé smiled and snaked his arm around her waist pulling her to his side. "Well love your uncle was just telling me a fantastic story. He really has quite the sense of humor." Leo chuckled.
"Oh really, what was this story about?" she asked.
"Nothing really, wouldn't interest you," he looked down at his watch, "- actually I have to go now. I promised Roy I'd meet him at his place. Son of a bitch can't wait five minutes after me arriving in Gotham to get me into his bed." He interrupted.
Mar'i's face scrunched up, "As much as I love you, Uncle Jay, I really don't need to be hearing about your crazy sex life with Roy." She shook her head.
Jason smiled at her, baring his pearly white teeth, and pulling her into a hug. "Listen to me Mar'i, if you ever need help, ever need anything just call me." He whispered into her ear. She raised an eyebrow unsure of what he meant by that. Then again she reasoned with herself that her uncle was quite overprotective. He could be an old man and would still raise his fists in order to protect her. "Thank Uncle Jay but if worse comes to worse and I can't protect myself I have Leo here." She whispered back.
They pulled away from their hug and her uncle gave her one last pat on the shoulder. The man looked over her head and at her fiancé that stood behind her. He brought his index finger to his lips and winked at him. "Remember I'm only a call away if you need me to kick someone's ass." Jason said, narrowing his eyes for a brief moment at Leonardo. Mar'i gave him one last hug before her uncle had to leave.
Once the door was closed his arms wrapped around her waist, lips pressing against the back of her neck. A sigh escaped her lips as she let her eyes fall closed. "Leo..." she sighed.
"I believe we should continue what we finished earlier love. Don't you agree?" he smirked against her soft skin.
