nineteen

+Since her encounter with Marella, Biana had been hanging out with the Diznees more and more, Dex in particularly. He made her feel... warm, after feeling so cold for so long since Keefe... They had been all over. Travelling Mysterium, Eternalia, Atlantis, the Wanderling Woods, his house, her house, the Sanctuary, everywhere! Sometimes they were with their friends, or the triplets, sometimes it was just them. It didn't really matter, they sort of stuck to each other like glue anyways.

Today they were having a picnic in a park in Mysterium, watching the triplets as they played on the playset. Biana and Dex sat together on a classic checkered cloth, a basket of food in between them. They were sort of laughing at Dex's younger siblings, who were playing tag with one another, but arguing that they were or weren't tagged constantly. It was more dramatic than the human movie "Mean Girls". At one point, Bex made Lex cry, insisting that she had tagged him, when he didn't want to be tagged. Biana had then brought him over to the picnic, had him drink some water and have a snack, then he ran back into the game, smiling again.

Currently, Rex was running after Bex, who kept escaping from his grasp, making sharp turns and climbing ontop of things out of the blue. Lex was sitting on the picnic blanket again, but this time he was making a chain of clover flowers. Biana and Dex were sitting with their legs out infront of them, arms behind them, their hands almost touching. Resting her head on her shoulder, she sighed, "It's a nice day for a picnic, isn't it?"

"Yeah, thanks for suggesting it, the kids are having a great time."

"We're still kids," Biana assured him.

"Not when we're with the triplets. I swear, they age me two thousand years!" They laughed, and Lex pretended not to hear them.

"I know, but they're so cute," cooed Biana, and Lex smiled at her before scrambling over and giving her a big hug.

"What am I, chopped liver?" Dex asked teasingly.

"No, you're two thousand years old, Biana's a pretty young girl, who would you rather hug?"

Frowning, the older Diznee replied, "Touché."

"Are you saying that your brother isn't pretty?" Biana raised an eyebrow, smiling slightly.

"No, no, no! I just- I mean..." Lex stammered, red in the face.

Rex came in to save the day, letting Bex get ahead, "Yeah, he's not pretty, but you are." He winked at Biana, and Lex nodded a little at the second fact before continuing his clover chain.

"You wound me," Dex flopped onto his back, his arm covering his face, hiding his smile.

"Oh poor Dex," she put a hand on his arm, her cheeks red, "I think you're pretty."

"Thanks Biana, but you don't have to say that, karma will catch up to the little twerps eventually."

"I mean it," her face only got redder, because she really did mean it.

There was a beat of silence before Rex tugged at Dex's arm. "You gotta get up! She just healed you, she called you pretty.

"Okay, okay!" Dex laughed, and it felt like the sound plucked the delicate strings of her heart like they were part of a harp instead. She stared at the two brothers, as they laughed, as Dex pulled Rex into his lap, giving him a 'noogie' and hugging him tight. Biana smiled, and felt Lex tug at her sleeve gently. She turned her attention to the youngest Diznee, and with a toothy grin, Lex placed his finished clover chain on top of her head.

"Oh Lex, it's beautiful! Is it for me?" asked Biana, smiling widely back at Lex, who nodded excitedly. "Thank you very much," he hugged her, and gently, she kissed his forehead in a sisterly manner.

Lex was elated, and immediately broke away to show his brothers the faint pink mark on his forehead. Soon, Bex and Rex came over and demanded they get a kiss too. Laughing, she kissed their foreheads, and all was right in the world. Together they sat on the blanket, and ate their lunch together. There were grapes, cheese, bread, finger sandwiches, and a small pie. They laughed and talked, the triplets entertaining the two teens, and the teens making them laugh and laugh. From a distance, they probably looked like a happy family, with Biana and Dex as the parents, the triplets their kids. In a way, they were, that is, until Keefe showed up.

He had always been ruggedly handsome, but today he was even more so. His trademark smirk was plastered on his face, making his maroon tunic seem brighter. He wore black, straight leg pants, and brown boots. His hair was styled in it's usual rebellious fashion, and his eyes glittered with excitement.

What was he doing here? Biana's heart suddenly turned cold, even though it was traitorously fluttering. She was still getting over him, and she still hadn't forgiven him for what he had done to both her and Sophie. She didn't want to speak to him, and turned her head away from him, pretending to be completely engaged in what Bex was saying about a boy in her class. Nervously, she pulled her hair in front of her face, trying to keep him from noticing her, but he walked right up to them. Dex saw her discomfort, and frowned a little in response before turning to Keefe like nothing was wrong.

"Hey, Keefe, what's up?"

"Nothing much, I was just hoping to talk to Biana for a sec. Fitz said you'd be here. Do you mind?" The boy ran his fingers through his hair casually, and Biana dared to look up at him, feeling sick in her stomach. All eyes were on her as she waited to reply.

She took a shaky breath. "O-oh... okay. I'll be right back you guys," she promised, and stood, ignoring the disappointed looks on the triplets' faces.

Smiling, Keefe assured them, "Don't worry, I won't keep her long. I'll give her right back, I promise."

Once the little Diznees seemed to accept this fact, she followed Keefe towards a big willow tree, glancing back at Dex, who was watching them go, before ducking through the curtain of leaves. Keefe stopped at the trunk, and held his hands together, level with his waist. He seemed nervous, and they didn't speak until she interrupted the silence, just wanting to make this quick so she could go back and sit with the Diznees.

"What'd you want to talk to me about?"

"I..." He looked off to the side dramatically, though he sounded serious. How extra. "I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. For what I did. For what I said. For how selfish I was to treat you so... awfully." Keefe looked genuinely distraught, and ran his fingers through his hair again, messing it up from it's regular fancy arrangement this time. "I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry, and that I was wrong."

"Yeah, you were," Biana swallowed, "is that all?"

"No... well... I..." He fidgeted with his hands, and she was starting to get impatient.

"You what, Keefe?" She asked, sounding more annoyed than she meant to, "You what?"

"I like you," Keefe said quickly, looking up at her with stars in his eyes, the same stars she would see when he looked at Sophie when he was in love with her.

Blushing, she stammered, "wh... what?"

"I know it may sound ridiculous... but... my heart... it just... it blooms when I see you," red tinted his cheeks. "I never felt that way when I saw Sophie. It's the kind of feeling that... I don't know if I'll ever see again."

The wondrous devastation in his eyes was what killed her, like he was expecting her to say no, that she wouldn't, she couldn't... should she? He had seriously hurt her, her head knew that, but her heart seemed to have other plans. A strange lukewarm feeling wrapped around her heart, a feeling she hadn't felt since before Keefe said those awful things. It wasn't a feeling that was overwhelming, just subtle, just there. It was kind of nice. She was scared of the name of it, was it... love?

"Say something... please," his plea brought her back to reality.

It was her head's turn to make a choice, "Did you order your matchmakers list? Was I on it?"

"You were number one," he swore.

"How do I know you're not lying?"

Keefe messily pulled a scroll out of his bag, unrolling it so she could see it was a matchmaker's list, and that her name was indeed at the very top. Biana couldn't believe her eyes, he gave her a small, hopeful smirk. Fear struck her, she was going to fall right back to him, wasn't she?

"That's not the only reason... is it?" She crossed her arms, ignoring her heart's screams to just run to him and say yes.

His eyes widened, and he shook his head furiously, "No, no no, no! Biana, I like you because you're so beautiful and smart and kind... and I love your smile, the way your eyes sparkle, everything."

She didn't say anything.

"So... what do you say? Can you forgive me? Can you love me again?"

Despite herself, she studied his face. Being one another's number one was incredibly rare, it basically meant you were true love, and the matchmakers never get it wrong. What would people think if she said no? Would she regret it? Biana glanced back towards the Diznees for a moment, as if to find an answer in them somehow, before turning to face the boy in front of her.

Taking a shaky breath, she answered, "Come sit with us, I'll have an answer for you by the end of the picnic, okay? I'm sorry, I just need a little time to think."

"You can have all the time in the world," breathed Keefe, and her heart fluttered a little.

She only nodded, and lead him back to the Diznees. She smiled reassuringly at Dex, because as she walked over, he was frowning with concern. The triplets ran over excitedly, demanding what Biana and Keefe had talked about.

"He was just apologizing for some things, and I asked him if he wanted to join us," the lie came easily to her, and all but Bex looked convinced, but she didn't say anything.

"Keefe is joining us?" Rex's eyes lit up, "No way! He's so cool! Do you think he'll listen to one of my jokes I've been working on?"

"Only if you tell me all of them, and you let me try some on you!" Keefe grinned, ruffling the aspiring jokester's hair affectionately.

Rex smiled like Keefe had just given him gold, and gave him a seat right next to his, so they could talk. Biana sat down next to Dex again, who was also wearing a clover crown, undoubtedly from Lex, who was quietly talking with Bex about something. They were both looking over at her every now and then, probably talking about her meeting with Keefe. Suddenly, she felt uncomfortable, watched, so she turned her attention to Keefe and Rex. The two were cracking jokes, and laughing. Keefe looked genuinely happy to be there with Rex, and seemed like his normal self. It made her happy, and she got that lukewarm feeling around her heart again.

"Hey, you okay?" The sound of Dex's voice captured her attention, and she looked over at him. "Was it something Keefe said?"

She shook her head, "Kind of... he apologized for what he said... for what he did..."

"And?"

"And he said that he's thought stuff over, and that he realizes that he's liked me all along, not Sophie. Apparently we're one another's number ones, and he asked me to go out with him..." Biana couldn't look at him, couldn't look at his face. Later on, she would wished that he had. Maybe things would be different from the way they turned out.

"What'd you say?" Dex asked, almost in a whisper.

"I..." She looked over at Keefe and Rex again.

"I said yes. I want to give him a second chance," she meant it, with all of her heart, but still, something felt... wrong. Off. She couldn't figure out what it was, so she assumed that no love was perfect, at least at first. "That doesn't mean you and I can't hang out by the way, with or without the triplets. I think you guys are probably the coolest people I've ever met."

"And you know Sophie Foster," Dex laughed a little, "you think too highly of us."

"And you think too lowly," she tried to change the topic, "but let's agree to disagree until I can prove with undeniable evidence of how amazing you guys are."

Dex chuckled, but it sounded a little heavy somehow, "Fine, fine. You can try."

"And succeed!" The warm feeling was back again, and stayed for the rest of the picnic.

After they had packed up, and the Diznees had lept away, Keefe rubbed the back of his neck, standing close to Biana. "So... have you made up your mind?"

She nodded, her face completely red, and looked up at him, holding her hands at her chest anxiously. "I'll give you a chance-" as soon as the words left her mouth, Keefe picked her up and spun her around, cheering happily. His joy was infectious, and the lukewarm feeling was there, warming her, making her happy too. When he set her down, he kissed her, and though she didn't feel fireworks like in the human movies, she felt happy, and that was enough.
