Sorting

Jack's POV

When we arrived at Hogwarts, we were escorted into the Great Hall. Most of the students were already sitting, leaving only the first years still standing.

"Good evening students. Before we begin our welcoming feast, there is the sorting to attend to. Let us begin," a woman said.

"That's Professor Juniper," Rapunzel whispered to me.

"Elsa Arandell!" Professor Juniper called. A girl stepped forward. She had platinum blond hair that was in a single braid and piercing blue eyes.

"She looks like she could be your long lost sister," Hiccup told me.

"Nah. Jack is way better looking," Rapunzel said in an off-handed way. I glanced at her, but she didn't seem to think she had said anything odd or awkward. Hiccup and I looked at each other. He had the same odd look on his face.

"Slytherin!" the sorting hat called. I had been paying so much attention to Rapunzel that I hadn't seen the sorting hat placed on Elsa's head. She stood up and joined the table of Slytherins.

"Pitch Black!" Professor Juniper continued. A boy with black hair and pale skin stepped forward.

"Bet he'll be a Slytherin," Hiccup whispered. The guy sat on the stool as the sorting hat was placed on his head. The instant it touched his hair, it called out Slytherin. Pitch joined Elsa at the Slytherin table.

"Merida DunBroch!" Professor Juniper said. Merida pushed through the crowd and sat on the stool.

"Gryffindor!" the sorting hat announced. Merida joined the cheering table of Gryffindors.

"Jackson Frost!" Professor Juniper said. I stepped forward and sat on the stool. The sorting hat was placed on my head. My mind buzzed. What house would I be placed in?

A good heart, yes . . . and plenty of loyalty too. Always true to his friends and heart, the sorting hat said in my mind. I waited anxiously.

"Hufflepuff!" the sorting hat called. My eyes widened in surprise. Hufflepuff? Why Hufflepuff?

I trudged over to join the cheering Hufflepuffs. Maybe I could talk to the headmaster later, get this all sorted out.

"Rapunzel Gothel!" Professor Juniper called. Rapunzel sat on the stool.

"Ravenclaw!" the sorting hat called. My heart sank. So far I wasn't in the same house as any of my friends. If Hiccup was put somewhere else as well, what would I do?

"Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third!" Professor Juniper said. Hiccup sat on the stool as I held my breath.

"Hufflepuff!" the sorting hat said. Hiccup stood with a grin and hurried over to join me.

"Hufflepuff! Isn't it wonderful?" Hiccup asked.

"Wonderful?" I said in surprise.

"It's just what I wanted! Hufflepuff is where the true friends are. All of the good people go to Hufflepuff," he told me. I only grunted in return. The sorting ended a short time later, and I turned my attention to the feast. I would be able to ask the headmaster about a house change later.

As it turned out, I wouldn't get a later. The headmaster vanished after the feast, and the Hufflepuff perfects escorted us away to our dorm.

"Professor Naunce, I need to speak with the headmaster," I said to our house teacher. He sniffed.

"I know what you're thinking," he said grumpily, "and you're not in the wrong house. The sorting hat is never incorrect. The headmaster has more concerns than a whiny student."

"How did you know?" I asked. "Did you read my mind?"

"No. We get at least one student every year who complains about their house. Usually that student is Hufflepuff sadly enough."

"Please, may I-"

"No. Now off to your dormitory. Your classes begin tomorrow."

Professor Naunce turned and left the common room, leaving me with the rest of the Hufflepuffs.

What was I going to do?
