Protologue
"...and six times eight divided by five equals five and nine-tenths, so carry that over to the nine and..."
I felt sweat pour down my head. My vision was blurry, and my heart was racing more than it originally does, but I didn't stop. I needed to prove I'm smart.
"...and so this answer is nine hundred ninety-five." I pulled the chalk around my answer, making a big circle, after putting a line underneath my answer. I attempted to control my breath, it being the most I've ever talked in my life under a single hour.
I turned around, facing the one deciding my face, with such pride. I felt pride beam out my face as I glance at my mother in the background. But her face, it's not matching mine. It was filled with...
Oh no. Oh, God, what did I do wrong!? I, I double checked everything, I made sure I was right! What did I forget!? I glance over and I see it.
The units.
No, no, no, no, no! Hopefully, maybe—
"I'm sorry ma'am, but such mistakes cannot be allowed in my academy. You're disqualified, I'm sorry, Mrs. [Last Name]. You're just a unqualified advocate for this school."
No, no!
"Wait, please, Mister Orritub, I'll do anything, I—"
"Thank you, try again next year. NEXT!"
I felt my throat tighten up. I glanced over my mother, who did nothing but looked away angerly. She stormed out, saying nothing, but I already knew what she has said to me, just by those actions.
I felt tears form in my eye, and that started dripping under my chin. Let out a sobbed, before covering my face and running of the stage. How... how could I make such a big mistake?
As soon as I left the building, I saw my mom, smoking a cancer stick. "Mom, I, I, I—"
Suddenly time stopped, as I felt a sting on my cheek. I fell to the ground, feeling pain from all around me. "Don't. Just, don't. Your piece of shit." She walked off, leaving me to cry. I felt more pain shot throughout my entire body.
I only grabbed myself and sobbed. That's all I can do.
"[Your Name]."
Huh?
I wake up. I'm in the car, and I'm moving. I see trees all around me, and big puffy clouds in the sky shaped like balls.
"We're here." Mother said.
"Oh?" I responded curiously.
"Welcome to school, it's nicknamed TTS. I think we'll be good here, it's free. Everything is free here."
"Oh... Okay." I let my head down.
"Look, [Your Name], we have to make this work. You know what'll happen if it doesn't."
I nodded simply. A few minutes past by, and I see a big plain building, no letters on it, it looks to be one story.
"We're here."
As soon as the car is slow enough, my mom kicked me out and threw my stuff out of the window. Everything scattered, and as soon as she could, she left, saying that I better be good, or else.
I picked up my stuff and headed in. I was greeted by two strange people.
