Chapter 1 Birthday Bash
I have always hated these parties that my parents host. I am not against charity parties. But what I hate, is the time wasted in getting ready and the need to put on a fake smile to all these obnoxious rich people who boast around their new yacht or cruise trips.
Oh! Sorry to be rude, where are my manners? My name is Emma Thompson. I am twenty-six years old and welcome to my charity/birthday party.
Yay me having rich ass birthday party thrown by my parents when I am completely capable of throwing my own.
I hear a knock in my bedroom door, before I could answer. My dear parents barge into the room with balloons, flowers and chocolates. They lead a parade of our loyal helpers, who for their share have there hands filled with gifts and food. Also, did I mention, they all are singing 'Happy birthday' song!
Before I get into what happened after they bombarded me with their wishes and gifts, let me introduce my beautiful mother Charlotte Thompson, Founder and Director of Global Communications. And my handsome father William Thompson, Co-Founder of Global Communications, plus a loyal sidekick for my mom both professionally and personally.
To be honest till date I have no idea what their work is.
All I know is that both have come to their positions with pure hard work and determination. My parents got me when they were quite young and for sure I wasn't part of their big dreams. But still they loved and supported me through the years.
They didn't force me to follow their footsteps and become the heir of family business. They told me always to do what I wish to and not what I should do!
My mom exclaims, "Darling you are twenty-six years old! I still can't believe you are a grown and mature lady already. I still remember when you used to poop around when you were a baby."
I am sure I am red with embarrassment, I retort, "Mom, not today at-least!"
Everyone in the room laughs wholeheartedly at our exchange, and my heart soars seeing their happy faces.
After controlling his laughter with a big smile on his face, my dad says, "So, my favorite daughter, what do you want for your birthday? The moon, stars or a new planet?"
I get up from my bed and respond, "Dad, first, I am your only daughter and no, I don't want anything. I just want us to enjoy a tasty breakfast our dear old Chef Mark makes."
I glance back and nod my head towards our butler, Mr. Charles. He calls out all the other helpers and leaves.
Before he leaves he wishes, "Happy birthday ma'am! I have placed the gifts and chocolates on the table. Hope you have a fun filled day."
For an hour or so my parents and I have a nostalgic walk down the memory lane as we watched some home videos and some embarrassing talent show events I was part of. Which was very cringe worthy from my side. But, totally the opposite reaction from my parents, as my mom sobs silently and is having her head placed on my dad's shoulder as my dad just looks content and pleased.
After discussing some notable events of my past, they leave my room and my mom pops her head back in and says, "Sweetheart don't forget the party! It's your birthday party and also a charity event. Please be there. I don't want the helpers and you playing hide and seek again."
I recall the memories and try to talk as I stifle in a laugh, "Mom it was one time and it was long, long ago."
My mom shakes her head, "But it happened right! Ok now forget it and come fast. We should wait for the food...."
Before she could complete I continue, "And not the other way around! Right mom?"
My mom rolls her eyes and voices, "Chop chop!"

After a hearty breakfast, I get a call from the hospital about an emergency case that I had to assist. Even though it's my birthday, my work has always been my priority.
Today the hospital was very busy than usual. After a three hour long surgery on the critical patient and some general rounds.
I go towards the car park with my conscious reminding me about the party, I get into my Tesla and check my phone, only to see fifty missed calls from my mom.
I am twenty-six and still there I am having a raising panic attack as I start my engine and accelerate towards my house.
The moment I reach my house, I see the security guard shaking his head and asks, "Where were you ma'am? Your mom is deeply worried. I guess she is a little mad too."
I try to joke in with a sly smile, "Are you sure little is the right term?"
Before he could reply, I see our house butler, Charles, running towards my car. I get down and he exclaims, "Emma it's out of my hands, I don't know what to do."
I straighten my back and ask him, "Can you park my car?"
He nods his head and exclaims looking at the house, "Best of luck!"
Looking up the sky, I say a silent prayer and start walking towards my wrath session with my loving mom.
*******
After a very long session of ramblings, shoutings and few cries of pleas, of course from my side.
I ended up in front of a huge vanity mirror, having my hair being pulled with hot iron by a young lady.
Along with my legs and hands being waxed and my nails painted.
Thank heavens, I received my amazing dress from my idol Sarah Brown, she has been designing all my formal looks since I was seventeen. At least it's something I have always had a say on in these parties.
My thoughts fly back to that time when it had always been a pain to find the right dress in malls, also the salespersons with judgy looks, where some of them even had the audacity to comment, "If you lost some weight this dress would have been perfect on you."
Pushing away these negative memories,
I put the AirPods in my ears and play the new song by the Jonas brothers "Sucker" I go into a deep slumber.
I am woken up by my mom's assistant, named Maria, a forty year old sweet lady who I adore.
She whispers, "Sorry dear to wake you up I heard you had a very long day in your work today. But your mom wants the best for you today, as it's a very special day for you, with the big announcement and all."
The words she says brings a smile on my lips, but my mind just focuses on the phrase "big announcement". Before I could ask her more about the announcement.
My eyes falls onto the box which had prettiest earrings I have ever seen in my life. They were diamond studs and were not so eye catchy but I was sure it costs some fortune.

She continues, "Your parents got this handmade from Belgium for you!" Her eyes gleamed and I smiled at our employee who has become our family over the years. She wishes, "Happy Birthday darling, I wish you good health and wealth!"
I smile and mouth thank you.
She nods her head and leaves.
The moment she leaves, the makeup artists surround me and turn me into pure glamor.
***
After two hours of glam and glow, here I am, standing in front of my long length mirror with a beautiful black gown that reaches my knee caps. The thing is, as I said, I am not a skinny ass girl, I am healthy but just lazy. So I don't exercise and have a sound body. Resulting me to have thunder thighs and huge arms, with lot of skin rolls over my body.
I am not ashamed of my body, it's just that I feel insecure at times. Because of my lazy habits, I tend to put on weight instead of losing them.
So even though the people around me are gushing that I look so pretty and all, but what I see is a beautiful smoky eyeshadow which is completed with a dark burgundy lipstick. And my thunder thighs shows its existence whenever I move. I put on the earrings that my parents gave and damn, that was the piece which completed the outfit. I have never been a fan of earrings but I put a mental note to try some.
My hair is done into perfect beach curls as I requested. I usually don't like having my hair up, as it shows off my wide shoulders which is my biggest insecurity. And being only 5"2 doesn't help my overall look. So I slip into the block heels I got it via online, yesterday. As I slip my feet in, I already started regretting as I can sense the pain in the end of the night.
I look into the mirror one last time and turn to my amazing glam squad who tirelessly worked.
"Thank you all of you, I look so pretty!" I couldn't help notice my sound cracking as I appreciate their effort to make me presentable.
My train of negative thoughts comes to a halt, when Charles opens the door and says, "You can come down ma'am, the party is about to begun."
I nod my head and pray silently, that the party goes smoothly. I put on a happy smile hiding the unsettling feeling and start walking down the stairs.
Only if I knew, that this party not only changed the course of my life but came with dozens of problems.
