Plot

Plot:  a character solving a problem -- or failing to.

Plot stops when you go into flashback.  A flashback done well mirrors what's going on in the main plot.

At the beginning of a novel, the reader is looking for someone to attach to.  Don't write a prologue where the apparent main character gets killed off.
