Chapter 3

Kandi briskly walked to her desk with her lunch and sat down. She was currently trying to lose weight, so a chicken Caesar salad was on the menu for today. She took a quick sip of water and placed the glass back down at her desk, making sure the condensation drips didn't get on her paperwork.

Gracefully flicking her thumb across her screen, she unlocked her iPhone with her left hand and began to eat with her right. She was really into this one story on Wattpad, A Country Girl's Dream, and she'd been dying to finish the chapter.

As she crunched on a crouton, she had finally reached a part where she could contentedly leave it for the time being, she closed her Wattpad app and opened Instagram. She scanned through her feed, liking pics along the way. Suddenly her phone blared beside her: it was her co-worker, Alex.

"Hey girl! What's up?"

"Nothing!" Alex squealed into the phone, "except listen to your radio!! Are you on 102.7??"

"Yeah, I am, let me turn it up..." Kandi reached across her desk to her tiny radio and turned it up.

"She took my arm,"

Kandi squealed back into the phone, " ah! I love this song!"

"I don't know how it happened,"

Alex and Kandi sang to each other with the music,

"We took the floor and she SAID!...

Kandi heard the click of Alex's phone and then the familiar tap-tap of her polka-dotted heels coming down the hall. Kandi grinned until her eyes crinkled.

Now don't you dare look back,

Alex poked her head around the corner and in time to the song, lip synced,

Just keep your eyes on me!

Kandi spoke in time to the song, "I said you're holdin' back," and Alex joined in,

She said 'SHUT UP! And dance with me!!'

The girls dissolved into giggles, gasping for air.

"Oh man, I love you!" Kandi breathed, wiping tears from her eyes.

"I know, right?" Alex wiggled her eyebrows.

"That song is like one of those 'one hit wonders' from the '90s...I mean, who heard of Walk Off the Moon before?"

Alex snorted, "is that even their name? Sounds a lot like Walk Off the Earth to me..."

"Haha, I have no idea. But if they can make another hit like that, I think people won't be sitting around wondering what the band's name is!"

"True enough," Alex nodded her agreement.

"So, you on lunch now?"

"Yep, just started."

"Well, come eat with me!"

"Can't, thanks though, gotta go get my lunch today...forgot it in the fridge at home!" Alex face palmed herself as she turned to go.

"See you before you leave though, k?" Alex threw back over her shoulder.

"Yep, for sure! Bye!" Alex and Kandi may not agree on everything, but one thing is for sure, they got along just fine in spite of it. And they both loved music.

Speaking of music...

Kandi opened YouTube and searched "Britain's Got Talent". She might be a proud Canadian, but honestly, nobody could touch the entertainment value of what was on Britain's Got Talent. And Canada was a part of the Commonwealth, so they're like, cousins...right?

Kandi clicked on the first video that caught her eye and put her earbud in while it loaded. She absentmindedly picked fluff off of her woollen shrug and found her thoughts wandering to the "X Factor's" creation of One Direction. She found it positively amazing how those 5 boys lives had changed.

I wish. She sighed.

But never in a million years would I want to be put through what they have been put through by their "fans". I guess fans are an amazing thing, I know I'd appreciate them if I ever have fans of my writing but these girls who send hate and stuff...I honestly don't get it. And about the gay stuff: seriously? Grow up. Man, I guess celebrities aren't allowed to have friends of the SAME gender even anymore without rumours stalking them...these poor guys.

"I guess I'm a bit of a goof!" Kandi heard herself saying. She sighed in exasperation at herself: she hadn't paid one bit of attention to the video that had just played.

Too busy thinking about One Direction. Her mind teased from some random corner.

Ha! I guess so...it isn't so hard when they're that good looking though.

Kandi sat up straight in her chair. Oh gosh, she'd finally admitted it to herself, she felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment: but if someone was attractive, that was just a fact. In fact, anybody could be attractive, but not everybody was loveable, nor did she have a crush on everybody who was attractive, Kandi assured herself as she busied herself with eating the last little bits of grated mozzarella at the bottom of her salad container.

She worked for an on call business that answered phones for random companies. She worked for the branch that was on call for banks when their clients were overseas so she got to talk to people from all over the world everyday...it was kind of stressful but also SO cool!

She adjusted her headset, pressed the button beside the top blinking light on the phone beside her and began reading the script she had been left to read for the day,

"Hello, you have reached Kandice, what is your client card number, please?"

Kandi tossed her keys in her purse as she slammed her car door shut. She adjusted her laptop bag strap and flung her long auburn hair over her shoulder. She was currently staying with her aunt at her aunt's townhouse in a suburb north of Toronto, and so far she found she liked it. She loved the open spaces of country life, but the busy town life was interesting for a change. She fumbled with her house key, unlocked and opened the door, inhaling the smell of home. She had splurged and bought some home fragrance items from Bath & Body Works, and found it worth every penny. She allowed the soothing minty smell from the freshener to calm her nerves.

Her Aunt Shelly wasn't home yet, so she found herself poking around in the fridge, but nothing looked appealing. Then her eyes landed on the orange juice and she happily poured herself a glass.

Kandi sat down on the comfy black plush love seat in the living room and placed her orange juice on the coffee table, opening her laptop to catch up on some news items while she sipped her orange juice: Aunt Shelly was buying takeout tonight, so she decided to just chill until she got home.

After browsing for a bit, she clicked on Arts and Entertainment. Kandi liked to keep up to date on what was going on in the world of art and music and writing, she dabbled in music, but she loved writing. People said she had a gift. She'd never had anything published, for various reasons...reasons she didn't want to think of at the moment. After skimming down the page, she found an article that had a lot of reads. Curious, she clicked on it.

Zayn's Malik of One Direction Walks! Can Boyband Survive this Blow?

"What!? No way!" Kandi breathed out loud and found herself scanning the article intensely, looking for something...she didn't know what. As she reached the end of the article, she saw all the devastated teenage girls, confused parents and vicious haters commenting. She closed her browser and sighed.

Well, at least they're gonna try to keep going. I can't believe I just started to pay attention to them and poof! They're no longer the full band...figures.

Kandi opened her Microsoft Word and navigated to the latest story she'd been working on. She was deep into it when she heard her aunt enter the house.

"Hey Auntie! How was your day?"

"Good Sweetheart! Ready to eat?"

"Oh yeah, for sure! Why don't we eat in here? We can put a movie on or something..." Kandi's voice trailed off as she wiggled her eyebrows and took the bags of Chinese out of her Aunt's hands.

"Sounds like a plan to me!" Shelly giggled with Kandi as she went to the kitchen to get forks.

After picking out a movie and giving thanks for their meal, Shelly picked up the remote and hit play.

"Did you hear about that super famous boy band that broke up today?"

Kandi nodded as she took a sip of her Pepsi. "Yeah, they're not broken up though, just one of the members left...how on earth did you know about that?"

"I could ask you the same question!" Shelly laughed as she glanced at the tv...it was still old trailers for movies long since seen, so she continued, "I'm just teasing, I know you keep up on those type of things and to answer your question, my coworkers daughter called her mom crying...we thought she'd been hit by a car on her lunch break at school, but no, her "boyfriends" were not together as "brothers" anymore!" Shelly couldn't say anymore as the pair of them dissolved into giggles.

"Wow," Kandi breathed as she wiped her eyes, "and I was worried I was becoming obsessed cause I read a few articles about them and finally admitted to myself they were good-looking!"

"What?!?" Shelly cried in mock terror. Kandi gave her a playful shove. "I'm just teasin' you!" She chirped, but now the movie was starting. As the first credits began to play on the screen, Shelly leaned over towards Kandi and shout whispered, "but keep away from the blond one...he's too cute!" And she laughed out loud as Kandi hit her with a pillow.
