Chapter 10

Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me and all you're ever gonna be is mean...

Why ya gotta be so mean?

The radio finished the song as the sleek vehicle pulled into the driveway of the large estate.

"Thank you so much, Devon! I really appreciated all your help today." A high, silvery voice spoke clearly and correctly out of the car as the door opened.

"Anytime, Miss!"

"Devon, I told you not to call me tha-" the driver's door had slammed and the car was heading towards the garage before the young woman with the silvery voice could finish.

She let out a giggle and then shrugged to nobody in particular, "we'll need to work on him." She shook her head one last time before heading up the stairs to the large house located at the front of the impressive estate grounds. She did not knock, but instantly entered the massive, unlocked doors.

"Hi Kitty!!" She laughingly squealed as an adorable feline padded over to her across the marble floor and began pasting itself against her legs.

"Aww, did you miss Mummy? That's a gorgeous girl!" The cat purred back in contentment as the young woman bent her tall frame over to pick up the grey cat. With the cat now in her arms she began walking through the immense entryway and off towards an opening in the wall on the right. Within was an obsidian concert grand piano which was placed so as to be the centre of the room's attention. A white distressed wood desk, very small, was near the wall, close to the piano. A stand holding a guitar that matched the piano stood close to the desk. Papers, music CDs, pens, coloured pencils, a laptop, guitar picks and a metronome were scattered all across the desk in a haphazard fashion.

The tall young woman kissed the cat's head and placed it down beside the guitar as she sat down at the chair pulled up to the desk. Colours, scratches, ripped pages and random lyrics met her eyes as she carefully picked up one of the pages:

Oh I can see it in your eyes.

She began to hum along to the tune beginning to beat inside her head.

I know I'd give you a surprise...

The afternoon sun was bright gold by the time she emerged from the room, hungry and tired. She left behind a mess of papers across the piano and desk and the guitar was carefully laid on top of the mess on the desk, but a single page stood out in fresh, black ink; a brand new song.

As she stuck her head in the fridge and began to rummage around, her cellphone vibrated. She checked the caller ID before answering it and lifting it to her ear.

"Hello? Hi! How are-... Well sure, we can talk what's up?" She listened carefully for the next few moments as she pulled a jug of orange juice and a block of cheese out of the fridge and shut the door.

"What? Girl, you knew... Now wait a minute, you said you knew, I am not saying 'I told you so' you said you knew he was just going to do it again." She glanced furtively at the clock above the window on the other side of the kitchen and interrupted the muffled tirade buzzing from the cellphone, "look, where are you? Ok, get yourself together and get over here by quarter to six, ok? Ok, I will have stuff ready, ok, ok, no, just come, alright, hey...it's gonna be ok. Love you too, k, bye."

The tall young woman leaned back against the counter and rolled her shoulders. Leaning her head side to side, she groaned and picked up her phone again.

"Hello? Yes, I'd like to order a large pepperoni pizza? Yes, for delivery. As soon as possible. Yes, the usual. Ok, thank you, b-bye."

She stood up from the counter and headed towards her cupboard, scrounging through it and coming up with munchies. It was going to be a long night...
