It was hard enough being an illegal pseudo-human in a city filled with robot haters. But being a robot with ambitions of college? That was an entirely different matter.
Yet Henry's parents, two humans with an affinity for science and engineering, had inspired him to continue in their footsteps and pursue a degree in biology. They had paid for his education and helped him set up his dorm a week ago, assuring him that everything would be fine, that nobody could see through their handiwork.
Henry was beginning to feel the nervousness from his decision truly set in, especially as he walked into his first class and settled into a seat near the back. After all, he had been homeschooled his whole life due to his illegal status - which was its own issue entirely - and wasn't sure how to properly interact with people. It didn't help that that was one of the areas his parents had sort of skipped over as it was.
As more students trickled into class, Henry did his best to put on an easy, confident smile. Then he noticed that nobody else was smiling very much, so he stopped. If he had had a heart, he was sure it would be racing a million miles an hour right now.
To his surprise, a boy sat next to him, settling into the seat as if he had been there for days. "'Sup," he said to Henry. "I'm Chad."
"Henry," Henry replied, analyzing the boy's movements in less than a second and recognizing that he wasn't about to shake hands.
"Your first day, too?"
"Yeah." His mother said honesty was the best policy. "I'm a little nervous."
"Hey, don't be. We're all in this together." The boy flashed him a grin and turned back to the front as the professor walked in.
Henry readied himself for the lecture, smiling quietly. Maybe college would be easier than he had thought.
