chapter nineteen
Dear Harry,
I know you're lying on the floor of your bedroom. I know this because you're snoring, and normally, I would be kicking you or putting a pillow over your face to make you be quiet, but it is rather comforting to know that I'm safe, and here with somebody who really cares.
Like last night, you asked me why I'm being hunted, and again I avoided the question and pulled you into the water, and we raced each other. We had to have done about fifty laps each, as my thighs and shoulders are sore as all hell. Still, I don't mind.
I found that I express myself better in writing than I do aloud, and I just want you to know I'm forever indebted to you. I'm so thankful for everything you've done for me so far, and I don't know how I could ever make it up to you.
You left school for me - to protect me. I know of nobody that would ever have been so thoughtful towards me; people who are in my everyday life would never have done this for me. But you did, without hesitation.
You may not realize this, Harry, but you're saving me. Maybe someday this safety bubble will be popped, and maybe the Death Eaters will find me, but right now, I'm safe, and I'm so thankful for that.
The Malfoy's, my family... They're very bad people, and though I talk a good game of them in my letters, they're horrible. My father is Voldemort's right-hand-man, and he forced me to become a Death Eater in training, and it's terrifying. Voldemort wanted me to kill my headmaster at Hogwarts, and because I believe my morals are mostly in check, I couldn't complete the task.
That is why I'm being hunted. I'm a coward. I cost my godfather, my favorite professor his life because I couldn't mutter two horrible words.
You've introduced me to a whole new world over here in America, and even though your mother cooks when she could have a house elf to do it for her - how one could do all her chores for her, in fact, it's still so fascinating. Your little sister goes to a Muggle - I mean No-Maj school, even with the magic coursing through her veins, and it's like you live a double life. It's intriguing.
Alvin's Island was incredible, though you already know how I felt about that. I've never been to a Muggle department store, let alone a tourist-based one. The way cars are driven here are also very different than in the U.K. Everything is different, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
We may have started talking over a school-based culture project for your professor, but me being here with you is a culture project all in itself. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience it.
With Utmost Appreciation,
Draco L Malfoy
